Should the guitar be played in mass?

I trust there will be a variety of instruments in heaven, some that we have never laid eyes on before.

I obviously would not want to see any guitars in the EF mass, but come on people, God does not designate some instruments as holy and some as unholy.

Edited to add: And as much as I see discussions on the Eastern forum about whether it is good or not to focus on ethnicities and cultures, I believe Latins have the same issues in that some believe that the Church of Christ is Western European and anything that doesn’t fit into that is unholy.

I guess this African mass should be anathema.

And here is a confirmation mass. Those African Catholics are up to no good, hey? He he.

Yes, but Vatican II did hold the pipe organ in “high esteem.” That doesn’t mean, however, it also can’t be abused.

I really dont like going to mass that has contemperary stile music. Will this be adressed in the new mass?
I’m not a big fan either, but I don’t think it should be an all out ban.

Cardinal Arinze explains the distinction between the African and non-African culture here.

Very interesting and amusing Cardinal.

I wish I could hear his homilies. 🙂

It’s easy for him to say dance should not enter the liturgy at all when it comes to North American or European masses, but is fine for Africans because he is African and can celebrate different types of masses.

However, I don’t think he should say dance is wrong for Americans and right for Africans as Americans are multi-ethnic, especially in places like NYC.

I don’t want to give the impression that I would want to see these things because I like the traditional latin mass, but I like for a rule to be fair.

That’s an interesting point. It does appear that there is a presumption on people’s part that all Masses within a given territory must be said a certain way and only that way. But I think the bishops know that there are subcultures within the general population whose traditions are to be respected as well. The bishops after all allow many vernaculars other than the national tongue within their dioceses, though they themselves probably don’t speak most of them.

Rock music and guitar are not the same thing.

We shouldn’t put words into our Holy Father’s mouth.
Hhmm last time I checked rock bands use guitars and bass guitars 🤷
I am not putting words into his mouth I know he has a distaste for “rock” type music at mass and other secular music in mass.

He did mentioned that not all African cultures are the same and that the responsbility falls on the Bishop to know what is acceptable. In our western civilazation dance has not been part of worship, it most has been for fun. Has I mentioned earlier I love to dance, when I was younger I loved rock concerts, but they don’t belong at mass! They have their place in this world, but no place in the mass.

It’s down to connotations. What response does the music evoke? If it’s applause, mundane sentiment or physicial movement, move on.

Then there’s theory and practice. In theory, a guitar mass could be good. In practice …

Give it another 300 years. Let modernist laity gather unto modernist priests in the meantime and be guinea pigs for … whatever they’re trying to achieve.

Due to their beauty and scarcity, let’s support Gregorian Masses in the meantime.

I did not know BXVI said this, can you tell me more details (where, when)?

Luckily I already sing in a Gregorian schola :).
Francis Cardinal Arinze is the Cardinal in charge of the Vatican congregation for worship and Sacraments. He cautions that the use of such music and/or instruments be restrained. He wrote an excellent book entitled Celebrating the Holy Eucharist. It is very good reading.

True! But what I don’t understand is the argument that we should allow trandy music at mass. Why? The Church is very slow to accept things, and if it does accept those types of music it’s no longer a popular trend, so the purpse of “bringing in young folks” goes aways with that. It’s like now, we are stuck with 70’s folk music that in all honest no one really likes. Yeat chant has surpassed the test of time! It was not a trend, nor some experitment.

Guitar does not equal rock. There was a boatload of classical music written for the guitar before Les Paul ever plugged one into an amplifier. I myself play guitar (not at Mass). I do not play rock.

Please respond to the OP. The thread is going in too many directions.

I know that! I am just simply stating that the guitar can be used in many different styles of music. As I stated earlier when you introduced the guitar to mass where does it stop? Some say it’s ok for classical style music, others say folk/country style, and then you have others that say we should use rock style so younger crowds can be entertained at mass. Sorry I did not make my self clear, but hopefully I have with this statement.

Nope

Love of God is good and its because of this love that there are some that have decided to bring other options to our brothers and sisters in Africa. 👍

As for the OP I think the “new” Mass will be the Novus Ordo Mass that our Holy Father and those before Him had intended it to be after Vatacin II e.g., more Gregorian Chant and etc.

No. I am fairly certain a Protestant invented the modern guitar.

You win. How can I say no to that?

Praise God! :signofcross:

The song accompanying the video is lovely as well.
