What’s to “reconcile?” Islam needs to “reconcile” with the world, and especially Israel.
Reconcile does not mean apologize if that is what you are asking. Just that as our Spiritual leader (Catholic) and Vicar of Christ, He should do all he can to disarm this situation.

So he should apologize because they took his words out of context?
I don’t think so.

Hey, that’s an idea. He could say, “I’m really sorry you TOTALLY took what I said out of context and I’m sorry you’ve once again shown your true colors by threatening violence -which only serves to prove my point.”

I know I’m sorry that some Muslims have taken the citation of an academic discussion from 700 years ago, the citation itself taking place within an academic speech on Faith and Reason, and shown their worst possible colors that the quote only hinted at (and wasn’t even being used for).

Peace and God bless!

The way I see it, if they get violent in response to this, then all they’re doing is proving that he was speaking the truth - that Islam “evangelizes” through violence.

If they want him to be wrong, all they have to do is ignore him and pay attention to what’s important in life - loving your kids and doing your daily duties.
Hey,
Apparently they did resond with violence!!! When I logged online there was an article about a response he made. The article said that the muslims bombed 4 churches in the gaza strip in response to his remarks. That right there proves the Popes comments to be 100% TRUE.

STOP THE FORUMS!!!

WE ALL AGREE!!!

PRAISE THE LORD!!😃

I’m going to continue to pray for the safety of Christians, especially in the most hostile parts of the world, and for the safety of the Pope.

literalists and sensationalist always take quotes out of context.
Muslim leaders who inflame their peoples hatred are the ones who need to make apologies.

And the Muslims and the media have described the Church firebombings and burning of “Pope statues” as peaceful demonstrations.

Hello,

Here is the statement that the Holy Father should issue:

“I am offended that Muslims have taken my words and quotations out of context and have become enraged and offended and thrown a temper tantrum; and I demand an apology from them (Muslims)”

I’m going a bit against the grain here, but I’m really not sure.

I think that the Chair of Peter has grown to both a political and spiritual position, and as such, animosity or so-called “harmful” comments should be avoided. The Pope has PR just like any other official, and, as such, should really try to reconcile as oppose to divide.

Yes, I believe most of Islam has been overly violent. At the same time, blantantly telling someone the truth can be just as bad as lying to them.

One of the most oft used quotes on these boards is “Win the argument but lose the soul”. It’s explained that just outright telling someone they are wrong will usually make them cease to listen.

Should the Pope apologize? No, I suppose not. He has his opinions and is free to stick with that. In his position, however, he should perhaps reconsider what he says about Islam in the future with a more tactful eye.

And I realize that he was quoting someone, so it isn’t really his opinion.

Here is, in fact, the statement made by the Vatican:
Vatican Clarifies Pope’s Comments on Islam
Saturday, September 16, 2006 12:00:00 AM GMT
Pope Benedict XVI “sincerely regrets that certain passages of his address could have sounded offensive to the sensitivities of the Muslim faithful,” the Vatican Secretary of State announced in a clarifying statement released on Saturday, September 16.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who had only been installed in the Vatican’s second-ranking post the previous day, issued the statement in response to a worldwide furor among Muslim protesting the Pontiff’s September 12 speech at the University of Regensburg.
In the passage of the speech that has roused so much anger, the Pope was quoting a 14th-century Byzantine emperor, and the Pontiff "did not intend “to make that opinion is own in any way,” the Secretary of State said. What the Pope intended, the Italian cardinal emphasized, was “a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence, from whatever side it may come.”
Pope Benedict is dismayed, the cardinal said, because his words were “interpreted in a manner that in no way corresponds to his intentions.” Far from belittling the faith of Muslims, he noted, the Holy Father had explicitly warned, in that same speech, against “the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom.”
Citing the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate, Cardinal Bertone said that Pope Benedict held the Islamic faith in “esteem,” and strongly favors inter-religious dialogue. He said that the Pope hopes the present “uneasy moment” can be overcome, and “collaboration may intensify” between Christians and Muslims.

He has not issued an apology and I know he will not.

I fear the Mohammedans may put a fatwa on his head.

He should not apologize.
He should go further and encourage Muslims (and all people) to examine the claims of Christianity and the Catholic faith
from a first-hand source.

Jaypeeto4 (aka Jaypeeto3)

The Muslims are caught between the rock and the hard place. The truth of the Pope’s remarks truly does offend them. Yet their most predictable reaction is to show that the Pope was right on target.

If nothing else, the Pope has raised an issue upon which both Muslims and Christians must begin to focus very clearly. Is Islam a religion prone to violence, and is the proof for that in the writings of the Prophet himself?

New item via AINA: “According to the website Islam Memo,** one Christian was killed in Baghdad after the Pope’s speech two days ago.** The speech created a wave of anger throughout the Islamic world, including Iraq. A poster has been placed in many Baghdad mosques for the previously unknown group, “Kataab Ashbal Al Islam Al Salafi,” (Islamic Salafist Boy Scout Battalions). This group threatens to kill all Christians in Iraq if the Pope does not apologize in three days in front of the whole world to Mohammed.”

Item: Sheikh Abubakar Hassan Malin’s fatwa:**“Whoever offends our Prophet Muhammad should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim.”**Item: Iraqi jihadi threat:“We swear that we will destroy their cross in the heart of Rome … and that their Vatican will be hit and wept over by the Pope,” said Jaish al-Mujahideen (the Mujahideen’s Army) in the statement, whose authenticity could not be confirmed. The statement lashed out at “Zionised Christians and loathsome crusaders” and was accompanied by six films showing attacks against US military targets in Iraq, which it said were “dedicated to the dog of the crusaders (an apparent reference to the Pope) in retaliation for his remarks”.“We will not rest until your thrones and your crosses have been destroyed on your own territory,” said the group, which has claimed many attacks against US and government forces in Iraq.more at: michellemalkin.com. One of the churches bombed in Gaza was Anglican - see the page for more.

ISTM that there is a side of Islam which is making its character all too apparent. It doesn’t look as though an apology would do any good - which is not to say that it might not be a good idea even so, even though it’s not clear that he has anything to apologise for. It’s the Pope’s decision - only he knows what his intentions were. ##

This event has had an unexpected affect on me. Though I do not condone their usual actions, I have always understood why the Arab world, and the Palestinians in particular, have a problem with us and Israel and I have tried to see both sides. I have always accepted that Islam is really a religion of peace. Because of this event we are again seeing how “peaceful” it is. When someone says something they do not like they shoot, kill, bomb, and destroy. Some say “those are only the extremeists”. Oh really? Where then is the “peaceful” majority? I have heard no condemnation. I have seen no arrests. Christianity, and Catholicism in particular, is attacked every day. As Catholic Christians we follow our Lord’s example and turn the other cheek and pray that our attacker’s hearts will be healed. When people like various White supremicist groups commit acts of violence in the name of Christ we condemn them and their actions. I can no longer accept the notion that Islam is a religion of peace and just assume that so many people, including many of Islam’s top leaders, just do not understand their own religion.

So, no, the Holy Father should not apologize. It is the violent Islamists and their leaders who owe the world an apology for once again proving that the statement the Holy Father quoted is as correct today as it was when it was first uttered.

NO, he should NOT.

The present violence of Moslems just kind of goes to prove that Islam is precisely what THEY protest it is not. And while we need to find a a way to coexist in peace, it cannot be done at the expense of Truth. Either Islam is correct or Christianity is. The two diverge on a simple foundational question: One says that Jesus Christ is God from God, Light from Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, one in being with the Father, through Whom all things were made, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity and the Redeemer of the world, who in His Passion, Death, and Resurection made propitiation for our sins to the honor, glory, and justice of God. The other says that He was a prophet and that it is blasphemous heresy to say that the One God had a son. One says that the path to heaven is through Christ only, the other denies it. So there’s no way to reconcile the two. We just need to agree to try and live in this world in peace and let the Holy One sort us, as He will inevitably do, into the sheep and the goats on that dreadful day when He finally calls a halt to the whole thing.
Amen!!

The Pope did nothing but speak the truth. Some people don’t want to hear the truth, but the fact is, telling the truth is part of the Pope’s “job description”, isn’t it?
God bless him, & keep him safe from any fanatics who wish him harm.
