Silly Question: What Should I do if Mary Appears?

OK, this might be silly, but if Mary suddenly appeared in my office, what would be the proper response. Should I stand and say hello, bow, kneel, fall prostrate on the floor, what? I question the proper action because I wouldn’t want to bow down before a false god.

I know, I said it was silly. 🙂
I don’t know what is ‘appropriate’ but I would give her a hug or kiss her hand if she would let me. I think after going through all that she has been through she deserves a big genuine hug. And besides she is our mother after all and she is doing so much for us all the time.

If after I hugged her she didn’t have her angels throw me down and smite me, I would get down on my knees and ask what I can do for her and offer myself completely. How could I refuse?

And if there was time left I have a TON of questions. I have a list. In fact I should formally prepare it just in case. 😉

Afterward, I would probably question whether it really happened or not but I am sure she would help me with that.

I would be very suspicious of the apparition, as many of them, if not most, are not authentic. Some of them are demonic in origin.
I think some of these vague images are demonic in origin as well. I believe that is what the Church teaches also.

There is something you can do that is a whole lot more important than seeing Mary or Jesus appear before you.

We each have the opportunity to see Mary or Jesus as much as we want – in ourselves.

If you want to see Mary or Jesus – great. What counts the most is that you learn to imitate how Mary or Jesus would act. And that you learn to have the attitudes that Mary or Jesus would have. A loving attitudes towards others, even if they are a different race or speak a different language.

Almost any part of this task is something that seems quite difficult and nearly impossible to me. But we must each try.

Only one life – will soon be past. Only what is done for Christ will last.

Even the first phrase of the “Hail Mary” is something I find difficult to live. “Hail Mary full of grace…” And how little grace I show others each day. As somebody wants to change lanes in front of me when I drive. Or when the banker is going to slow or takes a phone call when I try to make a deposit.

We each have many opportunities each day. Hundreds of opportunities to be more gracious. More caring. More patient. To be more like Jesus or Mary.

If you want to see Mary, great. Work on becoming a spiritual imitation.

1 Cor 13:8 “Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.”

If you saw Mary in your office, she would only be there for a brief time.

1 Cor 13:13 “So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

Do what you can do. And don’t worry about what you have no direct control over.

What vague images? Did someone mention vague images?

Must admit, I’m with you. I’d be very, very, very suspicious of, first, my mental health, and, second, the “vision.”

But, once she convinced me (and, if she were indeed our Blessed Mother, she would!) - WOW!!! 😃

Hmm he said he didnt want to bow down to a false God…Have to tell you Mary is not God and NO Catholic believes her to be so.🤷

By vague images I meant the cheese sandwiches, and water stains, etc. Some are figments of the imagination, but signs, such as occurred at Knock, happen from time to time.

I believe the enemy does plant images in places either by suggestion of the mind, or otherwise, for the purpose of causing mockery of the Faith.

There have been apparitions in Egypt, I’ve seen the videos of it on You Tube. They certainly look authentic, but, what is its meaning? The Egyptian Christians I have met are uncommonly faithful and holy people. They have been persecuted like you wouldn’t believe since the Muslims took over.

I’m the op. I agree. Golden calfs aren’t gods either, but people bowed down to them – Of course we wouldn’t under any any circumstances. But the fact that they aren’t gods doesn’t mean we can!

This is a confusing area. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t act as though I was worshiping Mary.

With the original question I was assuming Mary’s authenticity had been verified and was asking what I was to do after that.

As it turns out, there have been some very enlightening answers here and I’m comfortable with the prospect of her appearing. One of the most interesting is that she may appear to announce my death/welcome me to Heaven. That is about as wonderful as it could be. I think if she was the first soul I saw from the other side it would be very good news!

Thank you all for your help.

(By the way, there are no water stains or old grilled cheese sandwiches in my office) 🙂

Many saints have been duped by the devil during an apparation or locution. I don’t think that you would be able to tell while it’s happening. By looking at the after affects, you would probably know whether or not its authentic. But you would have to question why she would appear in an office. This is where a good spiritual director can help the person discern what is going on.

Grandma Mary in the rocker knitting, paddle at her side; Uncle Jesus roughing around with the youngins’…(when not taken seriously) how cute.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I would think that the best thing is to act with reverence, full of prayer. And actually, there are false apparitions, and satan can appear as an angel of light, and besides this people have hallicunations for differing reasons. So first you should do as Scripture advises, test everything, and test it in this case. And by responding with prayer, you cannot go wrong, whatever is actully happening.
I am trying to recall what people did who did see her. The only examples that come to mind is the reactions of of Bernadete and of Juan Diego at Guadalupe. They didn’t know it was Mary, though of course they were impressed greatly by this beautiful lady. So they weren’t completely flabbergasted. Of course too there is the reaction to Saint John when he saw Jesus in glory in Revelation 1. As I recall, he fell down as someone dead.
If we do see Mary, we are in a lot of trouble. People will laugh at us and even persecute us, as happened to Saint Teresa of Avila for example when they heard of her spiritual experiences, including visions of Jesus and others. So If there was a choice, perhaps I would pass up such an experience.
One point for discernment whether an apparition of Mary could be or not be a manifestation from Hell would be: If the apparition requests you pray WITH her to God. Satan could never get a single word out in prayer. But, ther are other points to be alerted for, naturally.

Are you saying that if a spirit prays with us it has to be from God?

As soon as they are baptized, God the Father is their Father, Jesus is their brother, and Mary is their mother - and they become your brothers and sisters, too! 👍
