Then there is also the fact that many of the female Saints would not have exercised their vocations if not educated. St. Gianna Molla went to university, and was a doctor. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, as we know, was a student of Husserl.
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross is my patron saint. I chose her specifically because she had a PhD in philosophy and was pretty brilliant. Her writings on the vocation of women are especially interesting, and I have long appreciated her thoughts on the value of women in public life as well as her ideas on the ways in which women who are not mothers of living children can still “mother” others.

I wonder how he’d feel about a 16 year old girl leaving her parent’s home to go off and fight a war.

She sounds awesome I’ve got to learn more about her.

That was something else that bothered me about his article, either becoming a mom or becoming a nun seems to be the only vocations suitable to a women. But what about the thousands of faithful Catholic women who are neither, and probably never will be either? What does he say to them? Should they not be able to serve God with the talents they have? Should they not get an education to help them do that?

I’d like to get in before the thread is closed.

First of all, I resent Reason No. 1. I work pretty doggone hard to get my wife to take care of me. Why, if she weren’t organized I’d be wearing holey underwear and eating expired dairy products. So believe me that I’m not going to put the kibosh on the arrangement I have now. Sheesh. The nerve of that guy!

No. 2: "Catholic OB-GYN Dr. Kim Hardey notes that a woman is naturally very observant of a man’s faults as long as she is in a platonic relationship with him. Once she becomes sexually active with him, she releases hormones that mask his faults, and she remains in a dreamy state about him. We can see why God would arrange things in such a way so that when in a proper state of holy matrimony, she would be less sensitive to his faults and thereby less tempted to be critical of him. "

Wow. This is a gold mine of information! Is there any way someone could identify those hormones and turn them into an aerosol spray? A guy could walk into a bar in ratty old sweatpants, smelling of a week-and-a-half without bathing, spray a force field of hormones around himself, and the women would be lulled into a dream state. Think of it: men will pay through the nose to live the life of Charlie Sheen.

No 3. As for staying at home instead of going to college as a means of learning to be a good wife and mother: watch about ten minutes of daytime television and you might change your mind. Jerry Springer, anyone?

I think it’s a very traditionalist and old-fashioned point of view. In my opinion women need to have an education of some sort, even if they want to stay at home with the kids. That way they are prepared in case their plan to be a homemaker is wrecked by death or divorce. Or, the family needs more income and Mom would like to earn more the $10/hr.

The only good argument is the debt one. College is not a sure fired path to making a good living. Both men and women should carefully pick a major, and try to get through it with a firm goal in sight that is practical. Try to get through debt free!
It’s not even traditional at all. Remember many of the female saints had the equivalents of a college education. It would have been necessary for their vocations. What this is is a in a bad way nostalgic view of a past that really did not exist past, say, the 12th Century.

Hmmm…maybe it is not gender-specific and whoever does the author’s office sprays it around? The guy does seem to be in a foggy dream state when it comes to women! 😃

No kidding. Let’s not forget the Your-House-Isn’t-Good-Enough Channel, speaking of the “domestic arts”, not to mention the dangers of listening uncritically to all the media-pushed fashions in parenting and family life! :eek:

From what I gather Mr Alleman and Mr Gil don’t object to all women getting a college education, only those women who plan on becoming wives and mothers. If a woman is to be a wife then she shouldn’t leave home with her parents blessing until she finds Mr Right. Until then she will stay at home and practice the domestic arts and stay under her father’s authority. A college education would only encourage a girl to usurp her husband or her father’s authority over her. Basically keeping her dumb makes her less likely to rebel.

I went to the same church as Gil and Alleman so I know a little about their plan. Their girls follow a homeschooling curriculum that eschews any hard sciences and focuses on things that are more appropriate for the female mind: cooking, cleaning, household finance. When the girl reaches 18 she stays with her parents until she meets a husband or decides to become a religious.

I’m surprised that it took these two gentleman so long to get flamed for their opinion. They’ve been spouting this kind of stuff for a while now. Feminist lie: girls need college
And what about women who find out 20 years later they are not called to marriage? Live with mom and dad until they die and leave an inheritance? This presume everyone is called to marriage, which is not the case. And often, people do not know until later in life where they are called.

Wow. I didn’t think there were people like the article writer who actually still think this kind of nonsense. The girl should live in mommy & daddy’s house until she is married? What if she never gets married? What if her parents die young - then what happens to her? Oh, wait - I guess they should have bought life insurance to provide for her indefinitely. When does she get to be an adult?

I don’t think the article is seeing women as actual people here, but rather as property that gets passed down from daddy to hubby.

Someone needs to send this guy an email or a letter or something… some sort of dose of reality so that he’ll stop spewing such nonsense in the name of Catholicism. Embarrassing.
I think his first paragraph makes it very clear that he considers this case closed and that no reasonable person could disagree with him:
Probably the most controversial and rejected position we have at Fix the Family is that parents should not send their daughters to college. It is even more vehemently opposed than the submission of wives to their husbands. Both of these positions we have are a threat to the trophies of the feminist agenda, so the rejection we receive is always emotionally charged and ends up insulting, since once explained logically, the opposition runs out of substance and is only left to hurl insults and presume and misconstrue this practical wisdom into some chauvinistic evil. But to distinguish these 2 issues, we are NOT saying that sending a girl to college or women working is a sin. But after looking at the issues we raise, we would challenge anyone to convince us that college for girls is not a near occasion of sin. **In order to fore go further discussion (argument) on the issue **of college for girls, this article will outline the principal reasons for shunning college for girls.
I’d point out how arrogant and condescending this is, but I wouldn’t want to seem emotionally charged or insulting.

On the one hand: Terrible article! Probably the most sexist and unrealistic thing I have read in quite some time.

On the other hand, I’m glad to see that nobody here agreed with it. 😃

Since you know these guys, what do you think of their statements? I, myself, find it ridiculous.

I think what’s scariest about this article/blog is that the author implies that this is what the Catholic Church teaches. This is NOT what the Catholic Church teaches.

I have raised two daughters. Both excelled throughout their school years. Both went to college and earned advanced degrees (doctorate for one, MFA for the other). Both are working and earning a good salary in the fields in which they earned their degrees.

I personally believe that it is foolish for women to prepare only for staying at home and raising children. When 50% of marriages end in divorce, a woman simply has to have a way to support herself should the unthinkable happen. Statistically, women with children who are not married to a man are the poorest people in the U.S. Sometimes family can step in and help a woman who is left destitute by a divorce, but not always. A woman should not expect others to support her throughout her life–she needs to have a way to support herself.

Those who use NFP are proud to state that their divorce rate is incredibly low, around 5%. BUT…that means that 1 out of 20 couples who use NFP will divorce, and if your daughter is sadly one of the “1 out of 20,” she will need to have a way to support herself and her children.

IMO, it is the parents’ job to prepare their children, both sons and daughters, to make the most of a college education (if college is chosen as part of the preparation for life and career–there are other good options such as military, trade school, apprenticeships, marriage and family, starting a company, etc.).

Preparing kids for college and career should begin the day the child is conceived. Children need to be taught the joys of studying and learning, and should be trained to be curious about the world around them and interested in many different fields of study.

They should be taught to respect the authority and knowledge of teachers and instructors, and also taught a healthy skepticism when it comes to teachers and instructors!

And children should be trained to be temperate in all things, so that they don’t go away to college and fall head over heels into a morass of sin and frivolity!

Above all else, children need to be taught a Christian worldview so that they are able to discern the good and the bad and make wise choices in life.
Who can argue with this?

😃 I was thinking the same thing. It’s nice for us to all rally together in agreement every once in a while. 😉

…and what happens if she were to become a widow?

how silly.
You missed the part where he says that problem could be solved with the purchase of insurance, which is “very affordable”. He’s thought of everything.
(Note: I meant that with full sarcasm.) 😃
:rotfl:

Apparently this same article is being discussed on this thread: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=822781

And apparently we do have someone who agrees with the author about women going to college:
  1. forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=11204752&postcount=15
and
  1. forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=11204784&postcount=17
Thank goodness this seems to be the only one…

Offensive misogynist junk article. I have a degree, I love working and would love to be a wife if that happens. However my definition of wife is probably not theirs as I don’t want to be a submissive maid like many of these idiot men want. Instead I want to be a partner to my husband.

I am so glad that both I and my mother had good college educations. I grew up in a home where I learned how to take care of a home, cook, clean, do yardwork, care for a farm and farm animals, and generally how to be a well-rounded individual with the ability to take care of all kinds of different things. MY BROTHERS LEARNED THE SAME THINGS. My mom is also a nurse, so we learned a lot about first aid and general medical terminology and basic medical care, which has come in handy so incredibly often in life. She taught us to be capable individuals, and her college education paired with her teaching about life skills have been invaluable to us. Going into college, so many of my friends had no clue how to do laundry, keep a dorm room actually clean, how to do basic cooking, how to organize… I was doing all of that by age 7! By the time I got to college I was more than prepared to be on my own.

Now that I’ve graduated and have decided to go back to school for a nursing degree, I am realizing just how valuable my education from my mother prepared me for completing college successfully and also for the real world. My husband was kind of sheltered growing up, so I was able to get him up to speed quickly for doing everything he needed to know how to do as far as running a household goes haha.

In my humble opinion, their speeches, their writings, their intellectual approaches, their moral views, their interpretations of teaching of the Roman Catholic Church (doxa and praxis) and their interpretations of the natural moral law about:

the equality and the equity of dual humanity, male and female (the alterity and the complementarity);
the dignity of man and of woman;
the nature of marriage;
the rights, the duties and the obligations of wife and the rights, the duties and the obligations of husband;
the liberty of each human being;
the liberty of children (boys and girls);
the own responsablity of children (boys and girls);
the responsible procreation concerning the education, the learning, the formation, the instruction, the knowledges, the intellectual matters, the arts, the sciences, the philosophy, the psychology, law, politics, economy, history, geography, mathematics…etc (primary school, secondary school, grammar school, college or university);

Are immoderate, are out of the normal understanding of the morality teaching by the catholic church, are full of negative thoughts, are absurd, are in too strong reaction to the modern world (the catholic church does not react like that in front of the radical feminism of left), are discriminatory, in the noble sense, are not balanced, are not very natural and thus catholic.

They are touched by a wrong and sad reactionism. They are polluted, of the good faith or of bad faith, consciously or unconsciously, by some intellectual diseases (see the words of the Pope Saint Pius X about the modernism), here, a wrong reactionsim.

In the USA, there are many weird catholic thinkers. That is very particular of noting that, for an European: Ronald L. Conte Jr, Raylan Alleman, William Gil…etc. They are all very active on the web, they are activist, voluntarist, very in the action. Their strong propaganda is on the web. For me, it is sad of reading that. In reading them, i can understand that some people, who are out of church without quite enough discernement, can have a negative view on the catholics or on the Roman Catholic Church via this type of prism.
