Darn. I am having a tough time with this one. I don’t want to repent…lol

As I am smoking a pipe while typing, I disagree.

Smoking cigarettes is a stupid idea, but not mortally sinful.

Yea, I enjoy a good cigar every now and then. I don’t think that’s sinful. But hey, I’ve been wrong before…

For those of us who did’nt know, smoking is a grave sin, and must be confessed.

Is eating cheeseburgers and pizza also a mortal sin, since foods high in saturated fats are unhealthy and can lead to hardening and clogging of the arteries and, eventually, to heart attack?
Also, it’s too bad Blessed Father Damien Molokai, Pope St. Pius X, and Blessed John XXIII didn’t realize this and are now suffering in hell for all eternity for lighting up. 😦

Umm–regarding the fatty foods, gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

As far as pipe and cigar smoking are concerned, those tobacco delivery systems are carcinogenic as well; pipe and cigar smokers tend to get head and neck cancers (oral, throat,) as opposed to the more frequent lung cancers found in cigarette smokers.

Sorry to bust everyone’s bubble here.

I’ve been told by several confessors that smoking is a venial sin at most, because the addictiveness diminishes culpability (e.g., the smoker grabs a cigarette out of addiction to both the process and the substance of nicotine, and it’s not entirely volitional at that point.) And I’ve also been told by all of them that it is a stupid and dangerous addiction that can shorten my life, and that I ought to pray for the strength to kick the habit once and for all. (I’ve quit smoking seriously nine times in my life, but have not managed to STAY quit.)

If anything, a sin may take place when one makes the decision to* start* smoking, but most of us were young and foolish at the time, and could not grasp how foolish it was. The act of starting may have long since been confessed. (Even then, though, I doubt it is a mortal sin.) After that, however, it involves addiction which, as mentioned, limits or eliminates culpability.

hhmm so all those times I smoked a cigarret to impress some girls I commited sin? Darn!
I do occasionally enjoy the cigar.

Smoking may not send you to hell but why would you want to smell like you had been there already?🤷

You did it just for the smoke rings too, I bet. 🙂
Now what about using incense inside the house?
Lol you know me too well lol. I would say to them that they are Halos for special lady. Yeah most girls that liked smokers are the ones that liked bad boys. Thank the Lord those days are over and I came to my sences lol.

I have been smoking now for over 40+ years. My pastor knows and have seen me smoke. He has never told me to go to confession for it. My mom never smoked but her parents, my father and of course me smoked around her and her lungs were clean.

I work in an airport and the air pollution from the planes and vehicles are more toxic than cigarette smoke. We are exposed to the pollution for at least 10 hours a day.

So, if I do get sick, I can’t blame it all to the cigarettes.🤷

So eating one cheeseburger or one piece of pizza for dinner each night is a mortal sin? Surely you’re kidding me. I’m not talking about gorging here. I am merely talking about eating something that is unhealthy, which is not gluttony.

Yeah. Or burning candles to the Saints, since those also give off carcinogens! And microwaving food, since that’s been linked to cancer! Or tanning, since skin cancer has a 2% mortality rate! Oh no! We’re all going to hell! 😦
Lord have mercy on our souls! :signofcross:

The Catholic Church has never said smoking is a mortal sin, or even sinful, although it can be. In which case, why care what some poster or blog says. We should listen to the Catholic Church instead.

That examination of conscience has a lot of questionable material in it. By whose authority was it promulgated, anyway?

I read it but couldn’t see smoking in it. I saw drug abuse alright, but then again I don’t abuse my cigarettes, I just smoke them!! 😉

I want nothing to do with the pagan cult of health promulgated by the secular society of today. I am smoking as I type this in defiance of the tyranny!
