Something like, people who smoke have a 4% increased chance of getting cancer over people who don’t smoke
A quick look at the CDC website (the very first Google hit on ‘how dangerous is smoking’) says it’s not 4% more, it’s 25 times more.

So…which one is right? I’m still going to smoke, but I hate false internet statistics.

The problem I have with the anti-smoking crowd is that when it comes to drinking they are ususally pro-drinking or indifferent. They are a bunch of hypocrites.
You mad, bro? You for legalizing MJ? How about cocaine?

It seems that from years of practice that Nicotine and alcohol are the >socially acceptable drugs. and they have huge powerful lobbies. Lobbies that often don’t tell the truth about the addictive properties about their drugs, Just this evening I saw man after man denying that nicotine is addictive at congressional hearings. And who can blame them for lieing, after all they are paid to do just that by a politically powerful and profitable industry.

Pot or MJ has been strongly linked in the past with minorities, who lack political pull.

But believe it or not I don’t think smoking should be made illegal. It would be like prohibition all over. And we all know that turned out… More and dangerous liquor, the explosion of crime. I think smoking, like sex should be limited to private places between consenting adults. I do not consent to smoking in my house or vehicle and of course restaraunts and clubs/bars are not private. Perhaps there could be private clubs set up for smokers where they can puff to their hearts desire. That way everyone could be happy.

But there is no “right” to smoke any and everywhere you wish despite the feelings and heath of others.

I misspoke when I said that smoking always mean death. Because it does not in all cases. My stepmom did not die from cigarettes she smoked until she died from Alshiemers at the old age of 83. Some people manage to get away with it. But I came close to dying from nicotine. I, at one time smoked NF Camels like a train. And at the time of my stroke I had a Camel and a dip of Copenhagen in my mouth at once. I passed out and came to in ICU. Then I slipped in and out of reality for 10 days. I REALLY DON’T WANT TO SEE THIS HAPPEN TO OTHERS!

I was in Rome this week, and saw one of our American cardinals on the street, smoking a Marlboro as usual. This caused me to think fondly of Pope Benedict, who also smoked. I think I’ll just go with their opinion, thanks. I smoke a nice cigar about once a week, and a few cigarettes here and there. I feel no compunction to confess this.
I think that driving and smoking are not ‘inherently’ sinful. But, disrespect for life, whether one’s own or others’, is .

You do know that no causal link has been found between smoking and cancer right? Correlation yes, but correlation does not equal causation. The most they can conclude is that smoking may increase the risk of getting cancer. Last time I checked, the number was ridiculously low. Something like, people who smoke have a 4% increased chance of getting cancer over people who don’t smoke.
Then John Wayne must have died of natural causes (He actually died of stomach cancer, but he was a smoker)

Why do packages of cigarettes have Surgeon General’s Warning on them about health effects? If smoking is so harmless, why are pregnant women told not to smoke (the answer here is because there’s ANOTHER LIFE to consider - one that can be hurt by someone’s addiction).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Smoking is disgusting. Why anyone would want to inhale the poisons in those cancer sticks is beyond me. I remember when I would wait for the bus and I couldn’t get away from smokers at the bus stop since the smoke would drift into the shelter (which had no door, just a doorway). I can’t stand being around my relatives that smoke, either. My one Aunt that has smoked as long as I can remember, her voice is very bad (its almost like laryngitis) …and I bet she doesn’t realize it. I can also tell when she has been smoking because she’ll reek of it.

I think you’re the one who may be a bit confused on the Church’s attitude toward smoking. They don’t embrace it or celebrate to the extent that you think they do.

I’m just going to repost this link and quote excerpt from it:

theguardian.com/world/2004/dec/31/smoking.catholicism

“The article in an authoritative Roman Catholic publication, prepared with the knowledge and endorsement of the Pope’s most senior aides, declares that smokers cannot damage their own health and that of others ‘without moral responsibility’.”

Are you questioning the wisdom of the Church?

I mean, I’m sure the Church would support moderation if there was a way to smoke a pack of cigarettes without inflicting any meaningful harm to one’s health, but alas, science has not arrived to the point where smoking can qualify for the type of “moderation” that the Church might otherwise be inclined to encourage.

I’m not pro-drinking. Never had a sip of alcohol in my life, nor do I ever intend to.

However, when the pro-smoking and pro-alcohol crowd is questioned about their views on marijuana, they tend to express hypocritical sentiments (unless that person is a libertarian). Whatever views we claim to endorse, though, I think a little logical consistency would do us all a some good.
I think you need to go to a bar, line up a few shots and light up a good cigar. Dude, you need to chill. Read the catechism. Smoking in moderation is perfectly fine. Moderation is a subjective term and is left to the conscience of each person. You are, however, not the Church and you have no business dictating such things to others regardless of the topic. That smacks of arrogance…

What does that have to do with what I posted?
Why do packages of cigarettes have Surgeon General’s Warning on them about health effects?
Liberal feel-good legislation.
If smoking is so harmless
I don’t believe I said that.
Smoking is disgusting.
Then feel free not to smoke.
Why anyone would want to inhale the poisons in those cancer sticks is beyond me.
It’s simple really, some people derive pleasure from them.

That’s all well and good but, at the end of the day, it is their choice, not yours.
Anyone who would make the free choice to have a stroke is %100 out of their mind. I was lucky to survive mine, and many don’t. Life has been and continues to be a nightmare ever since. I pray for God to end my life, it is so bad. It was not my choice, the Camels and Copenhagen dip chose for me.

And what about the ones left behind?

You make think they are out of their minds but, again, it is their choice not yours.

I think people who skydive are out of their minds but I don’t think skydiving should be illegal.

You MAY? think…? Is that what you meant? You don’t care about those left behind, wives and kids?

I think people so selfish as not to care a whit about others and think only on themelves, such radical libertarians have no business in a civilized society and should be encouraged to live on private islands all by themselves.

What about the people that are left behind because of alcohol? What about the innocent people killed because of drunk driving? What about people whose lives and families are ruined because of porn or gambling? What about those left behind and the people killed because of car accidents? What about those left behind because of tragic skydiving accidents?

Do you think alcohol should be illegal? What about porn? What about skydiving? What about motor vehicles and driving? What about gambling?

Believe me, if I could live on a private island all by myself and without the government interfering in my life I would, in a heartbeat.

Legalization of drugs is not radical libertarianism, it is common sense. How much money has been spent on the war on drugs? How many lives have been ruined because of criminalization of drugs? How many innocent people have gone to jail for doing something as innocent as taking drugs? Do you think we should ruin people’s lives, their family’s lives, send them to jail, turn them into hardcore criminals, make it impossible for them to find a decent job, all because they decided to consume drugs?

Do you feel no compassion for the child that is going to grow up without their parent all because he or she decided to consume drugs? What about the mothers that are left to raise their children alone? Where is your compassion for them?

Well, in your own argument, it is the mothers’ choice, not yours. So you should either retract that statement or support abortion.
Are you seriously comparing abortion to consumption to drugs?
