I cant figure it out. Are they good guys? Bad guys??

From what I understand, they are an order, of men only…used to be priests…they want to be like Christ on earth ((sounds like good guys))…they’ve had some scandal…but nothing the CC hasnt (or isnt) dealing with…

Are they in good standing with the church? Or separate from the CC?? Do we condone them? Or are they like some rebel group??

I tried doing a search on CAF to see if there was anything on them, and found mostly opinions…some people just talking about them in general, some of them, not so charitable…((the overall consensus I take from them is that they are not so great-of-guys))

So whats the deal??

The Jesuits are as Catholic, and in as good “standing,” as the Dominicans, the Carmelites, the Franciscans, or anyone else. Zero to worry about on that front.

so they’re not some ‘secret’ militia of the vatican…lol…with a ‘black pope’ thats supposedly the most powerful man in the world??

lmbo…I’m laughing as I type it it sounds so ridiculous…but I wonder what basis people have for these kinds of claims…

Mental instability, mostly. 😉

I read a really elaborate website once blaming the Jesuits for everything from the Kennedy assassination and 9/11 to suppressing knowledge that the world is actually flat and denying John Cabot his rightful place as discoverer of the Americas over Jesuit pawn Christopher Columbus.

Historically, the Jesuits have at some times and places been a large and influential society, which naturally draws critics out of the woodwork. In latter times, at least in the country, they have a reputation for liturgical and theological liberalism. That’s really it.

Saint Ignatius Loyola formed the Jesuits.

Here is a link to the Catholic Encyclopedia about Saint Ignatius.

newadvent.org/cathen/07639c.htm

I first read about him in “My Life With The Saints” by Fr. Jim Martin, which is an easy introduction to St. Ignatius, and some other saints too. As someone completely new to the world of Catholicism, I find this book helpful. It’s easy a comfortable read.

The only other think I know about the Jesuits is that they are known for having founded several universities, not the least is one in my own growing-up neighborhood in Santa Clara, CA, which I never knew was also named for a Saint - Saint Clare.

Hope

The Jesuits (AKA Society of Jesus) were founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. They are a religious order within the Catholic Church. Anyone with an SJ after their name is a Jesuit. They frequently find themselves as the subject of ridicule in different circles for different reasons.

There is a popular perception of the order as being a “liberal”/“progressive” one filled with wacky theology (this is believed mostly of Jesuits since Vatican II, not that the Jesuits have always had these tendencies). There certainly are instances of that, particularly amongst the Jesuit universities. Yet, there are also many great and wonderful Jesuits out there: Cardinal Dulles (respected theologian), Fr. Fessio (founder of Ignatius Press), Fr. Mitch Pacwa (EWTN TV personality), etc. You certainly don’t want to make the mistake of writing off all Jesuits.

The Jesuits also frequently find themselves at the center of many wacky anti-Catholic conspiracy theories. Notably, many anti-Catholics point to the “Jesuit Oath” as a way to prove that the Catholic Church is evil. This “oath” has long been proven to be a complete fabrication, but evidence often does not get in the way of previously held prejudices.

Go to www.jesuit.org
This is the official website for the Jesuits in the US.

Read about St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder fo the Society of Jesus,
he led a very interesting life, had a very profound conversion experience,
and was truly a man before his time!

I love the Jesuits and am very Ignatian in my spirituality!
Can’t imagine where the Church would be today without them!!

It’s a mixed bag when it comes to the Jesuits. There are more than a large number of fruitcake heretics in the group. But there are also very faithful, loyal Catholics in the group. (Fr. Fessio, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, come to mind).

If I recall correctly, I don’t think that they are an “order,” technically speaking. They’re a society. But I could be wrong. My memory of these things isn’t always strong. 🙂

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) is a religious order for Catholic males. These are Catholic men who are either Priests or “Lay Brothers”. The society was founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, and was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540.

The Jesuit’s are the largest single Catholic religious order in the world. As of 1 January 2007, Jesuits numbered 19,216[1]: 13,491 clerks regular (priests), 3,049 scholastics (students to become priests), 1,810 brothers (not priests) and 866 novices, serving in 112 nations on six continents.

“The Black Pope” is a derogatory term for the leader of the Jesuits, who’s correct title is Superior General of the Society of Jesus. The name arose because of the Jesuit clothing, which was black - and the fact that as the Largest single religious order - they had a lot of influence and power.

yes the jesuits are church approved, although they did establish my rival high school, CRUSADERS FOR LIFE!!!
brothermartin.com/

some of them seem to air on the liberal maybe even heretical side, but you can probabally find that any where…

but the Jesuits seem fine to me (except the ones who are heretics of course), but fo my money i would recommend the brothers of the sacred heart. brothersofthesacredheart.org/

Thank you guys!! I knew it was just some whacky anti catholic conspiracy sort of a thing, I mean, come on- secret militia and black pope…

But whenever I hear these types of things, I wonder what gives credit to them. Like, at some point did a band of them, do some…militia type activist, IDK- maybe people just pull this stuff outta their behinds. I just wanted a background on them to see what they’re all about, also, like I said, I’ve seen some pretty harsh stuff about them on CAF (without posting quotes and calling out posters) which made me wonder why even some catholics would have it out for them.

And HOPE!!! Hey!! I’m right down the road from you!! Nice to meet a local on CAF…

I’m going to go directly to their website thank you to the poster who provided their link and do some exploring…thanks again!

Hey (and this comes from the high school rivarly thing :p) check out brothersofthesacredheart.org/ too

The Jesuits are one of the oldest largest orders that have survived many scandals. I believe I read somewhere that this order has produced more saints than any other. One must realize that where the most fruitful are there also is the devil.

Questions arose with the release of the best seller The Jesuits by Malachi Martin (whom was a Jesuit) in the 80’s.

I am currently taking part in an online retreat that Creighton University (a Jesuit community) offers. They have a wonderful site that offers many points of interest.

%between%

They make it quite clear they are obedient to the Holy Father and Rome.

With God’s graces…

I would avoid the Jesuits like the plague! They are a prime example of priests who are “in communion” and most range far from the faith. I speak from experience as someone who attended both a Jesuit High School and College. They were the first to fully embrace modernism in the 1960’s and forgo the saving the saving of souls in favor of social activism. A quick survey of any Jesuit University will show you how far they have strayed from the faith and morals of the Catholic Church.

And before you respond with " … I know the most holiest Jesuit priest…" I will admit that there are certainly exceptions. But as a whole, and as a society, they went down the tubes in the last few decades to the disgrace of some of the Church’s more honored Jesuit saints and martyrs.

The Jesuits are great! I attend White House Retreat House in St. Louis, MO every year for Ignatius Teachings. LOVE IT! 👍

I think questions arose a bit earlier than that.

Just to show you how widespread this misinformation is, Jesuit Conspiracy Theories is its own separate Wikipedia entry! 😛

Alberto Rivera (that wellspring of anti-Catholic fodder from which Jack Chick has drawn much) did his fair share in popularizing many of these theories. Here’s what Wikipedia says about that:

According to Rivera, Jesuits are responsible for the creation of communism, Islam, and Nazism, and causing the World Wars, recession, the Jonestown Massacre, and the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy (a Catholic); he further claims that the Catholic Church wants to spread homosexuality and abortion, that the Charismatic Movement is a front for the Catholic Church, that the Popes are antichrists, and that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon[3]. He has also claimed that the Jesuits were the masterminds behind the Medieval Inquisition in the 1200s, despite the fact that the Jesuits were not established until the 1540s [4].

The sad part of all this is that many people take this stuff seriously. 😦

I like the Jesuits, but, for some reason, they typically hate to wear cassocks (I am trying to keep this discussion a little light-hearted).

But as a whole, and as a society, they went down the tubes in the last few decades to the disgrace of some of the Church’s more honored Jesuit saints and martyrs.
You know, I’d have thought that someone with the letters “SSPX” in their profile would be a little more forgiving of other orders all things considered. I’m sure you wouldn’t want others to judge the SSPX based on a few representatives, no?
