So... who are the true bishops?

I think Moscow knows it cannot overturn centuries of tradition by seeking to be the new EP. I think it is quite happy to have a weak EP provided Orthodoxy knows that leadership lies with the largest church in the communion.
However, size does not equal leadership else Moscow would already have Ukrainians, etc. fully under its omophorion, stronger influence in episcopal assemblies, etc. I don’t believe a weakened EP would guarantee the MP a sudden position of universally authoritative leadership, considering the EP isn’t really all that strong to begin with. It can’t, or won’t, even help end the conflict between Antioch and Jerusalem.
Alone among Eastern Churches (EO, OO or Assyrian) it is hostile to Western churches - it does not distinguish between Catholics or Protestants.
Honestly, I don’t think this is quite accurate. Russians tend to receive converts from Catholicism rather lightly compared to, eg., Serbians, Old Calendarists, Mt. Athos, etc. They’re not too friendly with the Papacy, but by no means actively hostile against any and all Catholics, and less so than certain Churches. It does distinguish between Catholics and Protestants, e.g. in convert reception as I just mentioned.

We had a recent conversation in which Orthodox were asked what they think of pre-VII Catholicism vs post-VII Catholicism. I believe that I would say much the same here that Orthodox said there (in reverse of course). I mean, it’s not that I don’t pay attention to these issues, but I’m not Orthodox so it isn’t exactly my business.
This is true. While I care to an extent about what goes on with Catholic current events insofar as it affects orthodoxy, orthopraxy and Eastern/Oriental Catholics, I’m still just an outsider that’s not directly involved in any way outside sympathy.

In this field of human endeavour, nothing is ever that straight-forward or all that sudden. 🙂

Moscow has been seeing itself of being the latest receipient of the leadership of the church ever since Constantinopole fell in 1453, much like how Byzantines of those days say leadership of the church passed from Rome to them after the fall of Rome to the barbarians. This perceived leadership forms part of the Russian belief in its own exceptionalism. This exceptionalism is built very much into the Russian pysche, therefore the resistance against ‘Western decadence’ is obligatory to defend the purity of the Russian soul, and with it, the Orthodox faith.

This of course have as little to do religion as the Crusades had to do with Western spirituality. The organisation of church polity, be it Western or Eastern, while based on ecclesialogy, is often (at least) modified by political (not necessarily secular), historical and socio-cultural factors.

Ukraine you mentioned is a case in point. Much has been made in current media reporting of the crisis concerning and Eastern & Western halves and there is basis for that (but of course, again, not so simple). The Ukrainian church was converted into communion with Rome a long time ago and the political separation of at least the Western part of the country from Russia preserved much of its identity as a separate church from Russia. Leaving out the story of how & why the break towards Rome and subsequent Catholic oppression of the Orthodox church & attempts by Russian tsars to revert in Ukraine, let’s jump to the 20th century.

After the failure of the Russans to revert Ukrainians back to Orthodoxy (only a small minority did), this took an unexpected turn with the Russian communists. The establishment of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was aimed both to separate Ukrainians from the West and to provide a counter-weight within the church in USSR against the distrusted Russian Orthodox Church (which supported the tsar). Moscow of course opposed the UOC and later, under a deal with Stalin in exchange for suport during WW2, the ROC was given the churches & properties of the UGCC as well leadership of the orthodox church in Ukraine. Following the fall of USSR, Filaret (reportedly after failing to obtain the Mosocw patriarchate for himself) engineered a union of UOC and the UAOC under his de facto leadership, a move opposed by some in UOAC, UOC and by Moscow. Hence, today, we have the remainder of the UGCC (who suffered most under the Russians), a UOC in opposition to Moscow and ROC for those who wanted to remain Russians (I know I am simplifying a complex history in a few lines).

This is the history of the church we have - a mix of piety and ambitions at the highest levels. Christians of all shades like to think that those who dedicated their lives to the Church was moved only by the Holy Spirit. Undoubtedly, most (I would say almost all) did but there were many who had other motivations as well as virtuos ones. I am glad the Pope has now brought out careerism into the public debate - unfortunately, I suspect most Catholics do not know what he meant, having equated clergy with submission of personal will. Does any of this undermine my faith or the personal faith of any Christian today? No, any more than my faith is any less due to the shenanigans of the Borgias or the machinations of the Bertones among the clergy.

The large flock and Shepeherds of the Latin Church also enter into the Lenten Season, hearing those words of The Father , spoken in tenderness , to our First Father Adam -
’ Dust thou are and unto dust thou shall return ’ …The Father who would be already beholding The Face of The New Adam in the Old and the many to follow …and in the becoming of oneness , with the new and the old, we all get called to repent , with the old, on behalf of all in the family lines that follow , to help free us all, from the many curses and enemy holds - both the gnats and the camels !

May the powerful prayers of those in rightful, God given authority be there , to help free all those afflicted ,esp. by the effects of the unholy pacts - the camels , through the Milletisation ( millet is also a food of the camels !) ,as we gratefully recognise and trust how The Lord leads The Church and The Shepherd , to give the proper role and authority , to undo those pacts , thus to free those who are under seige by the dragons , whose power possibly comes from the swallowed camels !

The enemy tactics of diversion through focus on the gnats of so called corrupting outside influences be recognised for what it is, so that dragon ties can be broken , to be set free into the freedom of gratitude for the Providence through The Church and Her Shepherd, thus to help bring peace into lands that have suffered the scourges of division long enough !

Peace !

Calls for prayers for Ukraine , with threats of even nuclear war …
how such can also devastate the rich farming soil of the land for centuries …

…about the Icon of The Black Madonna being flown over the Black Sea …and if same was in preparation for war …an icon that was returned by a Shepherd, Bl.John Paul 11 ( who himself was painfully denied entry to the land ! ) and one who cared more about the inner beauty of truth and true love for The Lord, of doing His will, to bring forth unity , a message the Icon itself also seems to convey …

and Pope Francis, in Lenten Retreat , possibly also inviting us as he did in case of Syria too, for prayers on behalf of all who seem drawn by the ugly promises of power from war …a Pope , by his moving heartfelt gesture towards the man who was disfigured by the gruesome ailment …inviting us too, to look beyond mere appearances or the good feelings that might seem to convey truth and love but need not , if they serve divisions and all that comes from same !

May the powerful prayers of Our Lady and of Bl.John Paul 11 , joined to that of all persons of good will and on behalf of all who have been instrumental in the centuries of conflicts and wars in all such areas too , help to bring repentance at the highest levels, by beholding The Holy Face , in each other too , in the truth of The Incarnation and all that can come from same !

Peace !

In the midst of Lent and yet as a people of hope , looking forward with joy , also to the great event to take place less than a month from now - the Canonisation of the two holy Popes - many esp, having closer affinity
to Bl.John Paul 11 , who, in the great scheme of Providence , is going to be canonised on DivIne Mercy Sunday - a day that is also esp. dear to the Thomas Christians , celebrating the tenderness of The Lord for this Apostle .

Bl.John Paul 11 also affirmed the dignity and truth of the blessings of the Thomas Christians , when he mentioned how this Eastern Church had never intentionally broken communion with Rome ;

his visits to the land have been enthusiastically celebrated by most , thus hopefully also making reparations for calumny against the Latin Church , whose help in securing closer ties with Rome , in the 1500s , most likley helped to free the Thomas Christians from the fate of being destroyed by outside powers , which would have been as a result of possible infidelity , even if in ignorance , from falling under unholy practices such as caste system .

Hopefully, many in The East and West would make plans to celebrate the occasion ,. by having icons of the Divine Mercy Image , esp. in churches in conflict ridden areas - having heard how this is the only icon that has been done at the request of The Lord Himself explicitly ( true , private devotion and not denigrating the good inspirations of others who also engage in the labor of love of icon writing ) .

secure.marianweb.net/divinemercyart.org/product.php?PC=CIVIL25E&DID=130&PID=10500135&CATNAME=SPECIAL+OFFER

Could it be that , this icon , with the compassionate Fatherly gaze , with the Blood and Water that also represents The Spirit , pouring out , is giving us a means to move beyond the paralysis of the divisions and confusions about the nature of The Spirit , who , being poured into us children /sons , also proceeds back unto The Father ,from the sons , in The Son , with the cry - Abba ;
and as the Novena of the Divine mercy devotion exhorts , to bring all to the Ocean of His mercy ,so that , with every ’ Our Father ’ - we can trust that we are joined with Him , with many others in Him …

thus , to alleviate the alienations and rivalries …to be able to love The Father withThe Spirit of The Son …to undo the working of the enemy , who seemingly might have been on the path to negate the Fatherly Spirit in The Son , by letting powers have His icon , as Holy Wisdom / Hagia Sophia , in the form of a female ! to equate Him, more with the created wisdom alluded to in O.T and the sad history that followed , which is what The Spirit probably aimed at being remedied by those who seem to have been inspired and tended on , to proclaim the truth , in the years following ,
by councils such as at Toledo, 587 and which gets affirmed in The Creed , inorder also to affirm the dignity of the human , that carry The Spirit - this esp. critical in our times when the enemy wants all such truths to be washed away .

( Had not realsied that Bl.JOhn Paul 11 himself might have been a victim of the culture of death , if not for the heroic faith of his mother ! )

May the prayers and blessings of the Holy Fathers help us to be filled with the Holy Spirit !

I think we would follow the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, he being the successor of Peter. The Patriarch would be Bishop of Constantinople. Their bishops would then be included in conclaves and synods with the Roman Catholics. When that happens, our church would then really be catholic and apostolic.

Time for the Peter’s Pence collection this weekend , which also happens to be the occasion of celebration of the Two Hearts - Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart ( Fri and Sat, ) - themes of universal appeal to both East and West , as often as the heart is mentioned in the scriptures !

May be many in The East would show the gratitude for the many ways, the Spirit tended role of Peter has esp. given those in the East , the liberation from what could have been the yokes of slavery and death , brought in by subtle or overt coercion and the related pacts with powers that carry the spirit of fear and persecution !

As the nation gets ready to celebrate Independenace Day ,a nation whose Patroness is the Lady of The Immaculate Conception, good for those in The Church , to recall the freedom that has been brought into our midst , through the Chosen people .

Seems The Chosen people were to help to bring forth a Holy Woman , The New Eve, conformed to The Father’s Will - by the manner of her conception , in how Adam and Eve would have brought forth children, in the holiness and purity of the Prefall plan , by the holiness and purity of the chosen parents from a line of holy people who expected the Savior and dedicated their lives to help that happen !

Even the many wars in Old Testament could be explained somewhat , in how God was trying to protect that line , since the enemy too was hard at work , to mess up the lines and thus 'delaying ’ The Incarnation - as per Bl.Emmerich .

The Dogma of The Immaculate Conception thus helps to draw our awe and gratitude to the ways of God, His fidelity and holiness …and mercy , to those who accepted such an easy, sweet yoke , by acceptance of The Dogma , trusting in the role of The Spirit , in the tending of The Church , thus the freedom to be set free from the effects of those hidden yet destructive pacts !

That destructive agenda of the enemy might be also evident , from the declaration of the Dogma of The Assumption of Bl.Mother - again , The Church , attentive to the whisperings of The Spirit , thus countering may be a death wish for Mother Church , possibly from the same
’ camelisation’ / milletisation pacts , who had the focus of the celebration on the
’ falling asleep ’ of The Mother !

( Hope Pope Pius X11 would be too canonised soon enough and the declaration of the above Dogma would be part of the reason ! )

Our hearts can rejoice that many more are recognising the benevolent nature of God’s ways , that of a kind , merciful Father , not lording it over but there to undo the knots and enemy pacts in the lives of His children and the help He offers for same , esp. through
His Visible Head , trusting in whose role is the easy yoke that allow us to be known by Him , as His children !

May the powerful intercession of the Two Hearts help us all, consuming us in the fire of love and the wisdom of The Sacred Head govern us always !!

No offense, but anyone who expects the re-union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in this world is completely out of touch with reality. The theological differences are simply irreconcilable ( e.g. is the Pope infallible ? either he is or he isn’t, there’s no room for compromise, exploration or re-wording ). And even if they weren’t, the great majority of Orthodox faithful and clergy are strongly opposed to any union, because they despise the West. Pardon my bluntness, but it’s true. Catholics in the West who talk about ecumenism, including people in the official Dialogue Commission, are completely clueless about the reality on the ground in Orthodox countries. Even worse, It is not understood that the Orthodox Churches are not a coherent unit like the Catholic Church, but a loose federation; they never rule out schism as a way of dealing with internal differences. How many Orthodox Churches do you have to be in communion with so that the Great Schism is healed ? 3 ? 5 ? Is the Russian one ( 90% of the faithful ) optional ?

No offense taken - yet , categorising persons of good will, down through the centuries who have prayed and worked for the unity in the ( Sacramental ) Churches , from desire to see the fulfillment of the promise for a world that would believe ,all the blessings from same -
true, they may not be thinking with ’ human’ minds !

We can easily recall how The Lord warned Peter , not to do so , also as a warning for those to follow too down through centuries and even gave Peter the wording to use , under such circumstances - ’ get behind Me , sa… ’ !

’ For those who have , more will be given ’ - if one side has shown more faith, hope and love in the matter of unity , that too could indicate , how the flow of graces may not have been thwarted … …and where it might be so , for many reasons !

Stll, there is the case of Joseph of Arimethea , a hidden disciple of The Lord at first …it would be no surprise , if in our times , there are many who too recognise the absurdity of the reasons for the divisions …has been instilled enough trust and grratitude for the Holy Fathers and their role , thus by desire possibly may be in union to a good extent !

We can thank The Lord …often …and more often …for what He has done …continues to do …esp. by His own intercession …( what an awesome truth ! ) … in every life and its situations too … and be one in that truth , esp. while infront of the Bl.Sacrament … at every Holy Mass …at anytime !

Peace !

July …Feast of St.Thomas , esp. for all Thomas Christians all over …the Apostle , who was privileged to touch where The Blood and Water gushed forth from …in Latin Church, July is also devotion of Precious Blood …

Thomas, who was also the first Apostle, who sensed the stirrings of The Spirit ,in Peter , to go ’ fishing ’ - yearning to fulfill the Lord’s promise , to make him fishers of men …

and Peter , in turn , or his followers rather , there for the children of Thomas …who needed help , to throw away some bad fish , such as the caste systems , as well as effects of inadvertently having gone under dangerous divides … all of which had left the boat , in stagnant waters …for a looong time - till , the help came …

As is customary for ( fallen ) human nature , easy to point fingers at the other , for the errant ways of self or ancestors …just that , in the ways of The Kingdom, repentance from love of truth is the precious and needed way !

Hopefully , there would be more light in many such areas …

and who knows what the wonders from such might be - may be even a Hebrew based liturgy , since very likely that , such is what would have been there in the beginning ( no intention to contest anyone who might have arguments against same - feel free to disagree ! ) and the blessings of the kindly St.John Paul 11 , in the article below , giving the freedom for the local Church, to take full hold , to restore what might have been lost …

Hope that the dlilgent ( apolitical , non propaganda /media afflicted ) search for same would reveal what really might have been lost , way too early …but not late even now !

Interesting topic on the connection between Hebrew and possibly Sanskrit -

viewzone.com/matlock.html -

May the powerful intercession of St.Thomas be there, esp. for all his children, to cleanse and heal , blood and family lines as well - he , as a beloved of The Bl.Mother , whose help , possibly through the Dogma of The Immaculate Conception is aslo meant for such healing -
any family lines that could be carrying the debt of unrepentant sin, calumny , hatreds , divsions etc :…

by invoking The Mother, as The Immaculate Conception, could one be asking for the grace of the goodness of what She has been bestowed upon …and any fear / disdain for same , may be an indication , that there are hidden reasons , lost / hidden in the history !

May The Precious Blood cleanse , heal and protect us !

7/11 - seems to be a good day , to celebrate the many ’ twins’ /soul brother /sister type good Godly relationships and the blessings through them in all our lives .

Today is the Octave of The Feast of St.Thomas - of The Twin , as well as Feast of St.Benedict , who had a twin sister , named St.Scholastica !

We can start with gratitude to Pope Emer. Benedict , whose meditation on Thomas is worth recall, esp. the reference to the Hebrew root of the name -

ewtn.com/library/papaldoc/b16ChrstChrch19.htm

The Pope Emer. himself , a hidden sort of twin at present and inviting many , to follow him, like his name sake - in life of prayer and ( work - as is feasible .)

Was trying to read at random, through the writings of Bl.Emmerich , to find out who the real twin of Thomas could be - no mention , which seems to only support bit more the authenticity of her writings, if she too remained loyal to the mystery of the name , the way Holy Spirit intended .

Yet , that search helped to come across some other interesting hints of the truths in the bible ; Emmerich describes rather vividly The Lord presenting Himself , in splendor , to His Mother before Him revealing Himself to Magdalene- to the latter, almost in a hilarious manner, as per Emmerich , appearing like a gardener , may be hinting that she needed more work - His hiddenness to the two disciples going to Emmaus could easily support how some needed more unveiling of hearts and eyes , to recognize Him, which is possibly the ongoing truth for many of us too, thus making us sort of twins to the above and possibly also hinting at the truth that the way we behold Him afterwards also might be in very difft. manner , depending on the state of our hearts !

Emmerich also mentions how the bl.Mother did not mention to the other women about The Lord’s earlier appearance to her - possibly wanting things to unfold the way it is meant to be ;

ewtn.com/library/MARY/JP2BVM70.HTM - there is # 51 , on the topic , from St.John Paul 11 .

Had also read how there is some misinterpreted writings of Emmerich , on the ’ two Popes ’ and a Church in very difficult circumstances and how that might confuse Catholics , about the Papacy ;

well, as we know , Pope Emer. Benedict has not been Pope simultaneously with

Pope Francis ; yet , there is the title of ’ Universal / Ecumenical Patriarch ’ - not wanting to show nay disrespect for the well lovable Patriarch … but to help, more of our hearts to be moved for the cause of unity , in which all of us we too are /need to be sort of twins !

Bl.Emmerich mentions how Thomas always wanted to lots of things for The Lord .that is also evident from his zeal - 'let us go die with Him . , how he was on his way to evangelise China / Russia when he was called to the bedside of Bl.Mother, being delayed , the apostles opened the coffin to show him the body and happily only saw the burial clothes !

Thus, we have a powerful Patron , for all the places that need to acknowledge The Lord , as God and Lord …in all areas that He is Lord of …even if that could mean some might have to appropriately ’ hide ’ / allocate to appropriate occasions , certain traditions that could be the cause for any sort of fabricated contempt / scorn for imaginary divides and bring in unneeded burden of making God’s children feel less accepted , in the very place / church they ought not to !

The Octave of Easter - DIvine Mercy Sunday , is also Thomas Sunday , that celebrates the twin rays …the outpouring of The Blood and Water …thank God that The Church too has been merciful and prudent enough , to protect both sides that claim Thomas tradition yet , may be fostering hidden wounds , esp. to those in authority who have to be diligent to the truth, protecting all sides too !

May the Divine Wisdom of the Sacred Head govern us all and the prayers of the above Patrons guide all !

Thought it would be good on this 13th of July , to offer a little homage to our Mother , who depitcs, as we recall joyfully , the fulfillment of the role of Esther of Old T. whose help, on a 13th , delivers the Jewish nation in Persia , from annihilation .

We are also in times when many deal with grief at various levels and thougt it is worthwhile to get insights from Emmerich’s writings on the way the same is handled by one filled with grace -
this is after the scene of the scourging -’ ( on Bl.Mother ) her clothes damp with the dew of the night and her own innunmerable tears …her beauty, altogether superhuman , for beauty in her was made up of immaculate purity, truth, simplicity and holiness .

That is our Mother ! - that we too can often behold and invoke , so that grief does not overatke us , like it seemed to have for Magdalene - 'she could not think of nothing but her grief and seemed as though one out of her senses …on account of the unrestrained fury of her passions ’ and seems, The Lord , moved with compassion, appears to her,
? to give her ( and us ! ) a good laugh, appearing like a gardener, to get her from the grip of that girief that ? could possibly have brought back what He had delivered her from !

catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=3586

good article that gives a clearer picture on the controversy surrounding Emmerich’s writings and how the Popes have supported her - let us too be happy for this German nun whose role could hopefully help many, to win the battles against the assaults on faith and for a bit more glimpse on those who can be of help - having been there themsleves !

Blessings !

Prayers and sympathies esp. to those with any connections to the Ukraine , the recent tragedy and violence !

While one does not want to use this , as an occasion to foment more resentment , yet one wonders if more than poitical remedies , there are deeper issues that might need to be looked at , even at personal level , for the benefit of deeper prayers !

The topic of being set free from curses is something that more persons are opening their minds and hearts to and possibly , more , many more , doing so could have its beneficial effects at vaster levels too !

Rightly or wrongly ( wrongly I hope - being one who is of very little knowledge in these matters ! ) it was bothersome to read the wording of the Statement of Faith - Omologia , of the Syriac Patriarch ( who also claims that title for All fo The East ! ) -
’ I cast down as preachers under anathema all those who were corrupters of the orthodox ’ - not intending any disrespect or even dislike at a personal level .

syriacchristianity.info/PAphremII/biography.htm

Since those in exorcism and deliverance ministry mention the effects of curses , wonder how the above words would play out …esp. in the legalistic mind of the enemy …

would it be used as a sort of self curse …esp.considering the tragic exile of the Patriarch himself …
would such curses have any sort of lingeirng effects on those who leave such Churches and do not ask to be set free, with the awareness of the ’ roof ’ that is over them …

and does such, in turn could even have effects on those that they lead , in any roles …

how about those who choose to intercommune in such Churcehs …do they invite in unwanted effects …and could such be a major factor , in many of the tragedies playing out …
even in the inefficassy of preaching and the related loss of faith , in many …

and was Papal infallibilty the remedy given to undo the effects of such …

which seems to be the one Dogma that seems to be oppoed with such virulence …may be for what it could do , if accepted with more trust and gratitude …

Feast of St.Theodosia of Constantinople today - a woman saint , who shook a soldier off a ladder -

catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=2233

The theme of the Divine Mercy Sunday also takes on a deeper meaning - The Lord, through The Novena , inviting all to be brought to His mercy …to be set free from effects of past sins ( and curses too hopefully .)

Thank God that the recent Popes all emphasise this theme of mercy , for an aching mankind …

May we be blessed , to do so in unison , in the prayers offered for the Holy Father too at every Hoy Mass , thus to even bless those who curse and

May The Precious Blood be there for all in our lives ,even unto generations down, to free many from any curses and unholy pacts !

Peace !

’ I cast down as preachers under anathema all those who were corrupters of the orthodox ’ -

not intending any disrespect or even dislike at a personal level .

!

The above to read, no disrespect /dislike intended , at my personal level , towards the Patriach
( and hope same for others too .)

Regarding that themes of 'casting out, as anthema ’ , may be the Thomas Christians too are pondering similar issues …even making one wonder how far the roots of such themes go and its effects too , from the related mindset , all around …

May be, instead of an identity that focuses on casting out ,

a Hebraya ordianriate form of mission , to bring back Hebrew roots and even the theme of generational healing that could enrich themselves and all around would be the grateful forward step , even as any and all who might have been affected by the casting out would also reach out far back, into any omissions / commissions through the caste system , divisions among Churches etc , that also might have brought similar debts into one’s own lives and choose to repent and bless and bless !

May The Lord have mercy on us all !

Well here is what I think :

Rome : The Bishop of Rome aka the Pope obviously 😃
Constantinople The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
Alexandria : The Coptic Pope of Alexandria and all Africa
Antioch : The Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch
Jerusalem : The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem
Yes, but I would move Constantinople back as an auxiliary see under Antioch. The latter was erected by an apostle, after all. Constantinople was erected by the emperor.

I must admit that Antioch is the most complicated as it has the maronite, Greek and Syrian churches all claiming. However, if the apostolic rule of one bishop for one city is maintained the I’ll still go with the Melkite Patriarch
For the See of Antioch, each proper eparchy of the Patriarch is already in a different city, which are:
  • Greek-Melkite is Damas, Lebanon.
  • Maronite is Jebbeh–Sarba–Jounieh, Lebanon.
  • Syrian is Beirut, Lebanon.

By ‘proper eparchy’, do you mean the residence of the Patriarch? If so, then why would the title of the patriarchate not transfer, as has been done elsewhere? In my country, the equivalent of the primatial see would have been Malacca (estb 1558), but due to same reason as in the Middle East (conquests, migration, etc), the episcopal sees were eventually suppressed and then reorganised for Singapore to take over the lineage from Malacca. Eventually, a separate diocese of Malacca was established (not re-established) but Annurio Pontifico does not record the linenage from the old see of Malacca, which has now gone to Singapore (I presume the Singapore diocesan secret archive would have the list of bishops dating back to 1558).

Antakya, Turkey, is successor to ancient Antioch in Syria, which is a historical residential city.

Yes, the head of each church has a city of residence and this is his proper eparchy. But that is Rome for the Latin Catholics. I see the Latin Catholic history on giga-catholic for Malacca/Singapore but this is not a Patriarchial See:
  • 1558.02.04: Established as Diocese of Malacca / Malacen(sis) (Latin) (from Diocese of Goa)
  • 1576.01.23: Lost territory to establish Diocese of Macau 澳門
  • 1712: Lost territory to establish Apostolic Prefecture of Islands of the Indian Ocean
  • 1838: Suppressed
  • 1841.09.10: Restored as Apostolic Vicariate of Western Siam / Malay Peninsula (from Apostolic Vicariate of Siam)
  • 1888.08.19: Promoted as Diocese of Malacca / Malacen(sis) (Latin)
  • 1953.09.19: Promoted as Archdiocese of Malacca / Malacen(sis) (Latin)
  • 1955.02.25: Promoted as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Malacca–Singapore / Malacen(sis)–Singaporen(sis) (Latin) (lost territory to establish Diocese of Kuala Lumpur and Diocese of Penang)
  • 1972.12.18: Demoted as Diocese of Malacca–Johor / Malacen(sis)–Giohoran(us) (Latin) (lost territory to establish Archdiocese of Singapore)
  • 1985.05.27: Renamed as Diocese of Melaka–Johor / 馬六甲–柔佛 (正體中文) / Melakan(us)–Giohoran(us) (Latin)

Thanks for putting upthe details but my point is that the seat of the see can be moved as has happened with Malacca. So, why can’t patriarchal seats be moved, as it is essentially an eparchy. Take the Armenians for example, the see of Etchmiadzin was not an aposltolic seat and only emerged in the 4th century (probably). So, it obviously moved from where Thaddeus established it. There is therefore a precedent.
