So why do you think we have so many scandals in the Catholic Church?

Therefore, you are saying that the mistakes and mishandlings are worse than the pedophile/predator priest who stalked and victimized a young soul. That someone who made a grievous error in judgment is the real criminal and is the ones that should be held accountable more than that of the pedophile/predator? Really? Don’t misunderstand me, both are wrong, but the evil inflicted on the innocent victim by the pedophile/predator priest is the true absolute crime here.

Please kind Christian do not put words in my mouth. What I’m saying is simple enough to understand. Because of the coverup, a criminal case became a scandal. If it had stayed a criminal matter the effect would be considerably less. Of course you know this I’m sure.

What do you think are the chances that the end of this is in sight?

With all kindness, I am not trying to put words in your mouth, I am asking a question based on your statement “In simple language, it’s not the crime so much (bad as it is), it’s the cover-up”.

As for my thoughts on if the end of this is in sight? Lord only knows I hope and pray it will end today, right now. I pray that there is never, ever a again a victim of this horrible crime, irrespective of race, creed, color, nationality, religion, institution or vocation.

As a victim I can say the deed was very evil, repulsive! That was bad enough. then to add insult it is cover up because you do not want to cause any waves. well I say all of it is sick. These are suppose to be men of God no matter the name on the door.
 
I am just old enough to remember Watergate and Nixon resigning not because of the petty crime of th plumbers but rather the authority covering up the crime.

In this case it is not about the Priest, if it was then the other churches would have the same scandel. It is about the sole authority, as they claim, covering up the actions of the Priest. And in the case of the USA, the “Nixon” Bishop, B. Law, being promoted, perhaps by the Pope himself, to Rome instead of being cast out in disgrace like President Nixon.

In all of my posts in this thread and others on this subject, did I ever condone or imply that the cover-ups and mishandlings were excusable or understandable? On the other hand, have I condemned then as wrong and inexcusable?

Dear fellows of Christ,
let’s not argue so much or continuing fighting with each other, the devil must be laughing at us and winning his battle. Let’s embrace each other in our faith so that our church keeps stronger and united. As some people said, the priests that commited such crimes God will jugde them. Remember our Church is run by religious people, but human ones also. But the teachings of Our Father are the best guidance and discipline we have had in our lives and that has been the guide of so many generations before us. Let’s not let divide because we do not agree with some other fellows, but to look at the mistakes done in the past and now in a constructive way, so that our church keeps growing and that less people fall in the hands of Satan. So many times my family and i have look for the spiritual guidance and consolation from our priests, and they have always been there for us, even if they don’t know you personally. I grew up in a catholic school all my life until i got to the university and i can say that my spiritual formation that i have now and that it is a honour to be part of this church besides that as i get older i have realized that how wise our commandments are, how the Bible is a wise guidance through all our lives, just to look and marvel at the wonderful things that surround us and that God made them. I am infinitely grateful that so many religious people have been so close to my life, in my good times and also during my worst times. God is within reach everyday, He is the only companion that will never fail us. Have you ever wondered that if as a mother or father, one of our children fail us, do something really bad, how much does that hurt, how much painful is to face the world? I wonder how our Pope is feeling carrying all those burdens because his beloved “children or companions in God” have failed? I remember our Pope John Paul II, when he used to pray carrying the crucifix, all his beautiful face in sorrow because of the sins of the world? How heavy must be the load that the Pope must carry on! May God have mercy on Him and on all the affected children that has been sexually abused. Also, may our Lord keep us united and strong in our faith.

No, I think that the RCC does have more scandals–of a certain devastating type. Pedophilia and its coverup. These terrible crimes took place because the RCC for decades, probably centuries, attracted a certain type of man, the pedophile, into a hierarcy which was unassailable from the outside, in which they were sheltered. In times and places, notably Ireland, where there was a lot of poverty and, because contraception was illegal until well into the 20th century, -overpopulated with poor children who were warehoused, and subject to the tender mercies of unsupervised pedophiles. Where ‘sinful’ girls were placed as 'Magdalens" in warehouses run by the Sr. of Mercy where, they, too were abused as domestic slaves. The clergy knew about much or most of this, but didn’t want scandal in the church, so ignored it until the present time.

There is no corollary for this type of society in the Protestant churches, at least not since the Dickensian workhouses of the early 19th century in England. The abuse in other countries may be limited to certain social situations such as the ‘choirs’ in Germany. The full story isn’t available yet.

I know that you do not have a comprehension problem, so you must not have taken the time to carefully read the post. It is relevant, lelhajj’s thoughts, his/her prayers, his/her opinion, and message is clear enough. Just because it does not say what you want it to say does not make it any less important for her to express here. You certainly have had plenty of opportunity to put your thoughts forward. I might also add that in other threads that I have seen where you were posting, you to have inserted your thoughts that were not germane to the discussion. THEREFORE, what is you point and what exactly is your contribution to this post in asking this kind of question. To me it seems that you are attacking lelhajj for expressing his/her views.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear to you… A pedophile who is a priest was a pedophile/predator before he was a priest and will always be a pedophile/predator regardless of what profession or vocation he chooses. The priesthood is just one of them. Pedophiles/predators are notorious for seeking out positions that put them in close proximity of potential victims e.g. within the family, or as teachers, scout leaders, day care workers, youth pastors, music pastor, or pastor of this or pastor of that, or whatever job that affords them access to kids. It is not unique to Catholic Priests. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous, slanderous, and outright false.
