I try to use the Socratic Method to learn what others believe and why they believe it and determine whether it is true. Do you think this is wise?
If you are willing to get yourself killed, go for it. The Socratic Method invariably comes across as arrogant and annoying, not to speak of disingenuous (that’s certainly how your posts come across to me). So unless you have the kind of dedication Socrates did, you’d do better to pick another method.

In other words, Socrates showed that he was serious. You haven’t demonstrated this to my satisfaction. Your “Socratic” pose seems like a silly affectation, frankly. People don’t like being played.

I also don’t think imitating Socrates is possible in our culture. We have 2500 years behind us since Socrates’ time. We’re just too cynical and sophisticated. The great thing about the Athenians was that they were incredibly profound and at the same time had a kind of innocence in their intellectual inquiries–an innocence that is simply not possible any more.

The short answer is that you are no Socrates and that it does not become you to pretend that you are. This may be rude, but you asked for our opinion.

Do you remember what happened to Socrates?😃

By and large the Socratic method has been rejected by most disciplines and professions – law being an exception.

What is the correct way to imitate Socrates, ABC?
Using questions to extract your interlocutor’s view points and calling to attention any contradictions. The written dialogues have a point to prove. Consider Kreeft’s “The Unaborted Socrates.” He obviously wanted to use the SM to show that abortion is wrong, but someone could just as well do that for the other side. Plato does the same things in his more advanced dialogues such as The Republic. A good use of the SM never makes a positive point, but only exposes inconsistencies in others. If any positive point is made, it is because all other possibilities are rendered false, given the presuppositions of the argument (which themselves might be incorrect).

well I know they use it in law school so I better start getting used to it as I will be going to law school next year.

Do you believe Edwin that things are always as the appear when it comes to what a person says?

Would you say that wisdom is a virtue?
I would say, MM, that wisdom is what enables a person to know what is virtue and what is not. Whether wisdom is itself a virtue is something i would be willing to explore. Do you believe wisdom is a virtue? If so, please explain why.

Yes, VH. Do you remember what happened to Jesus? More importantly, do you think they were both unjustly murdered for the similar reasons?

So show how it’s bad.

Remember, the originator of the Socratic Method was given the choice of taking poison or getting the heck out of Dodge.😛
Well, if you want to explore Socrates’ reason for drinking poison rather than escaping, you could read Plato’s Crito and Phaedo. If you want to explore Jesus’ reasons for not letting the cup of death pass Him but going to the excruciating pain of crucifixion for you and me, you might read the Gospels.

If you did, you might find that both men preferred death to doing what is wrong. One might call them both insane, but one can never, with a straight face, call them both cowards or hypocrites.

Socrates makes an extremely interesting comparison of lawyers to philosophers in Theaetetus, WJP, would you like me to type what he said?

Don’t get sick – there are doctors who will not accept lawyers as patients.
