But we don’t want what is evil all the time. That is not even true of heathens.I don’t see how having the ability to choose what we want gives us anything other than bondage if everything we want is evil all of the time. We need to be regenerated by the Spirit to want what is good.
Gen. 6:5-7
The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”
Romans 2,14-16:
< For when the Gentiles who do not have the law by nature observe the prescriptions of the law, they are a law for themselves even though they do not have the law. They show that the demands of the law are written in their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even defend them on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge people’s hidden works through Christ Jesus. >
If we naturally want what is evil all the time, then even the gift of God’s grace would not help us,because we would never want that gift and would choose to reject it. If grace is a gift to man, then man must want what is good.
Genesis 6,5-7 cannot be taken as an unqualified statement on the depravity of man, because Noah and his family were a part of mankind, and they were not totally depraved. And we are of Noah’s seed. And apart from that, even those whom God destroyed in the flood must have had instincts which were good, such as caring for one’s own children;otherwise humans would have become extinct on their own.
