Some Christians Still Denounce Harry Potter as Dangerous

I know when I was a boy and read Hank the cowdog, I’d run around outside barking on all fours. Neighbors never knew what to think about me. People, especially Christians need to realize that anything and everything can have a bad impact if it gets in the hands of the wrong person or groups of people. I’ve read all sorts of books, the best ones get your imagination going, some people take that too far.

Harry Potter, started out as a well written book and although I didn’t like the movies or the progression of the storyline as well as the first couple of books. The feat of writing so many books is outstanding. One is hard, a trilogy is tough, a series like Harry Potter is a classic.

Repeating the question is not the same as answering it, but you proved Jharek’s point quite elegantly.
It is really a very simple thing and does not take an amazing depth of research. From the pov of the faith, if a given thing or practice has a reasonable chance of creating ANY interest in the occult, stay away. Simple. You can copy and paste that. 🙂

Come on, IrishPatrick, you can do better than that. The issue is whether the HP series turns children to witchcraft. This is something potentially verifiable.

  1. *]Are there kids who have read HP who now dabble in witchcraft? Yes.
*]Are there kids who have read HP but ***don’t ***dabble in witchcraft? Yes.
*]Are there kids who ***haven’t ***read HP but dabble in witchcraft nonetheless? Yes.
*]Are there kids who haven’t read HP - ***and ***don’t dabble in witchcraft either? Yes.

#2 establishes that HP is not a cause. #3 establishes that HP is not ***the ***cause. #4 establishes that there ***must be a cause ***somewhere.

So IrishPatrick, what do you think the cause is?

  1. Just think—how holy and pure these souls would be if they’d not partaken in such literature?

Just because an Atheist Writer’s books are published, doesn’t make them good for the soul.

Like boiling a frog. We’re being cooked. Slowly, surely.

These kids should be reading something more wholesome.

The Exorcists see the danger-and the effect of attachments and being worn-down by children and teens becoming familiar with these things that lead away from God.

Then there’s the cool stuff-the Harry Potter Wands, Broomsticks and Cups (among other things, surely) that are available for sale.

Go ahead, but a warning to those who allow their kids these items—like Ouija Boards-those who dabble in this stuff then wonder just when they opened that door and invited those demons into their life.

Some will never see the trees for the forest. Even when warned.
This is why the world (especially our Country) needs more Exorcists-actually, our Bishops are meeting right now because of this:

Bishops’ upcoming exorcism conference responds to queries about rite

    And…

[Click Here: Overwhelmed with requests for exorcists, U.S. Roman Catholic bishops are holding a special training workshop in Baltimore this weekend to teach clerics the esoteric rite, the Catholic News Service reported.

The church has signed up 56 bishops and 66 priests for the two-day workshop that began on Friday, seeking to boost the small group of just five or six American exorcists that the church currently has on its books.

“There’s this small group of priests who say they get requests from all over the continental U.S.,” Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, was quoted as saying…](http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101112/od_nm/us_romancatholic_exorcists)

    Ever wonder “Why?”

    God Bless you.

Lol! Our oldest daughter and her friend were into dinosaurs. They loved the Jurasic Park stuff. They were always playing Dinosaur outside!
(The kids at school made fun of them, and called them “Barney” and “Baby Bop.”)

You are so right!

“Here Lassie! Lassie! Is Timmy in the well?” —when I was a kid.

God Bless you.

What book would you attribute devil worshiping to?

Y’all need to start with a book called “Beware the Night” by Ralph Sarchie, if you can find it.

If that doesn’t bring this to light, follow it with “Hostage to the Devil” by Malachi Martin.

They’ll wake you to the dangers.

God Bless you.

The books, and the film series are about the fight of good versus evil. If you expect everything to conform, without question, to the doctrine of the Church, you will be disappointed,

Allow those of us who can discern the enjoyment,

John

Not while you were a practicing Catholic, I hope.

I pray you have changed -and turned from these evil ways.

I will lift you tonight at Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

God Bless you.

Priest Says Harry Potter Helps Devil, Evil

Excerpts of the Article from Father Mendoza, an Exorcist:

…“I think a book like this does a lot of damage,” the priest told us. “At its core it is about sorcery. I am sure that is not the best use of a child’s mind.”…

…”If you put all these ideas in a child’s head, that he can become a wizard, the child believes that, and that is opening an avenue through which the devil can get in,” Mendoza said Friday – the eve of the release of the series’ final book…

…“There are many demonic influences, curses and forms of witchcraft,” he said. ”And it’s in that field that the devil is able to work.”

“We should not accept sorcery or wizardry as a good thing when there is so much good in the world to embrace.”…

…Another priest with parallel views is Father John Corapi who says, “It is just not wise to place yourself or your children in the near occasion of evil.”…

Why take the chance, says I?

Ouija Boards have received a big resurgence in popularity with all the Ghost-hunting on TV.
When attempting to connect, people can end up with Demonic Attachments they didn’t bargain for.

—Back in 2003 in a letter to to a German critic of the Harry Potter novels, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed serious reservations about the novels. In this letter dated March 7, 2003 Cardinal Ratzinger thanked the author for her “instructive” book Harry Potter – gut oder böse (Harry Potter- good or evil?), in which she says the Potter books corrupt the hearts of the young, preventing them from developing a properly ordered sense of good and evil, thus harming their relationship with God while that relationship is still in its infancy. “It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly,” wrote Cardinal Ratzinger.

—In September of 1996 the Vatican’s chief exorcist, Father Gabriel Amorth condemned J. K. Rowling’s fictional boy wizard as downright evil. In fact his exact words were, “Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil” These books contain many positive references to the satanic art, falsely drawing a distinction between black and white magic.

—Fr. Thomas Euteneuer from HLI, who is also an exorcist, in several recent interviews said that letting our children read/watch this stuff (Harry Potter, Twilight etc.)is equivalent to giving them poison. In his newsletter dated 10/31/07 he states, “Fundamentally, Harry Potter indoctrinates young souls in the language and mechanics of the occult. The fact that the fake curses and hexes are not able to be reproduced because the “ingredients” are pure fantasy is beside the point. Curses are not pure fantasy. The fact that “curse” as such, and other elements of witchcraft, are presented in a glorified state throughout the Harry Potter series means that our kids’ minds are being introduced to and imbued with occult imagery. 337 million copies of occult imagery are being consumed by our youth in the Harry Potter series alone. The books may be good writing, but the writing is about something dark dressed up as something fun. That’s a great way to get kids hooked on the occult.”

That’s enough for me!
God Bless you.

Thank you for the information, Dawn!!!👍

The statements made by Benedict XVI about the Harry Potter series are just opinions and were not made infallibly. As far as the exorcist is concerned; his allegations are unsubstantiated.
But you HAVE to admit an EXORCIST for the Vatican IS qualified to give a sound opinion on what or what is not “Occult” since he has Experience on what or what is not TRULY Occult, right?

And Benedict (even when he was Cardinal Ratzinger) is not the Ordinary Man On The Street but a Learned and Holy Man who si qualified to know about such things, right?

Even if they were not “infallible,” his opinions carry more weight by virtue of position and experience than you or I have.

As long as you have discernment of what work is or what is not truly “promoting” the occult, I have no problem with the Harry Potter Books for folks who want to read them. Personally, I TEND to not see anything wrong with them, but not everybody agrees with me, Carnelian. And I’m realistic enough to know I may be wrong, too.

You and me may not see anything wrong in them, but other people do, Carnelian.
And just because they exercise their rights as parents to NOT expose their children to what they consider “Occult Indoctrination” does NOT mean they are idiots or morons who are religiously intolerant or Reading Illiterate.

Also----many would say they are merely following the Bible when they reject HP. The Bible (specifically in Deuteronomy and Leviticus) forbids having any truck with the Occult or Witches or Mediums or whatever. Fundamentalist Evangelicals I know personally specifically emphasize that beside the usual “it encourages Witchcraft or Wicca” argument.

We as Catholics are free (sort of) from NOT following the Bible literally, but you can’t blame Evangelicals from following THEIR path.
I agree with Irishpatrick. There is no harm in AT LEAST considering what effect HP may be intentionally or unintentionally having in molding our children’s perceptions of Life, their Faith, and the Occult.

Whether I personally do or do not buy that HP is a “gateway” to certain things (probably not, but there’s no harm in asking questions) does not lessen the fact that we need to have discussions about what our children are reading and what kind of values we are instilling in them through the works. ANY works. Even the Bible. And from what I’ve read in this thread and read elsewhere, MAYBE these HP-Questioning folks have a point. 👍

…on HP???

Would you Catholics suppress HP novels if you controlled a hypothetical Government Department of Morals that could deny the right to publish any material deemed witchy?

Did the pope direct you Catholics to avoid HP? And what on earth does an exorcist have to do with HP? Do you have aviation engineers explaining why you can’t really fly on brooms?
No, but they have “nothing better to do” College Students playing Quidditch----which is SORT of fun without the Flying Brooms, but not as Extraordinary or Interesting.

Next up, Secret Fight Clubs in dingy basements with (again) “nothing better to do” College Students learning the first rule of Fight Club-----“You don’t talk about Fight Club.”

And what’s the second rule of Fight Club, Boys and Girls? You guessed it…😃
You may laugh at this, but there ARE Secret Clubs like these around, if you believe certain people and the media (occassionally). And there are a lot of Bored College Students, too.

BTW------

An Exorcist knows about Witchcraft, Sorcery, and the Occult, whoch is what HP deals with, right?

As a few people have said on the first page, that we are ALL entitled to our opinions…this is mine, ok? The Harry Potter novels, are is a fantasy fiction series. Nothing within those books are real.

Personally there are MORE dangerous things out there, other than from the evil fiction books of Harry Potter!

There are kids out there these days playing violent video games, where they can kill people with knives and guns, run people over with cars…like the hoons drivers, and gangster kids we have in real life, cos they think life is a game.

Unlike these violent games, the Harry Potter series have the classic tale of the war and victory of Good over Evil. In HP, the good side defeated their Satanic figure and his creepy crawlies - how about focusing on that? Good always wins over Evil, right?

I think Twilight is more of a dangerous series than HP…but hey thats my opinion 🙂 🙂

HP may indeed not cause levitation to occur, (name removed by moderator), but Levitation HAS been known to occur in various contexts and instances------particuarly with people who dabble in the Occult. Just because HP does not promote Levitation does not mean that Levitation does not occur or exist.

Not saying Levitation is ALWAYS Satanic-----many Saints were known to levitate-----but many Occult and Satanically-Inspired people HAVE been known to do stuff like that. 🙂

Quidditch Leagues are part of your argument for why HP causes kids to turn bad? Is that right?

Any college frat hazes pledges and has secret rites. Even the Knights of Columbus do something like that.

Personally there are MORE dangerous things out there, other than from the evil fiction books of Harry Potter! There are kids - pre-teens who could be reading these books and doing harmless intimations of characters in the HP series - but are instead playing violent video games, where they can kill people, run people over etc etc.

I think Twilight is more of a dangerous series than HP…
Twilight is basically Mormon propaganda masquerading as a sort of “Vampire/Werewolf Romeo And Juliet” that ultimately teaches Young Girls that Satanic, Bloodthirsty, Supernatural, Undead, Raving Cold-Blooded Killing Machines are REALLY just Misunderstood High School Misfits with Tortured Souls, whom you really should really get close to and ultimately Lose your Virginity to because they are SO Sensitive and SO British and SO, like, HOT!!!👍:p:cool:
