Some Cuckoo took a Kindle to Adoration

Acutally i own a kindle and the clicking sound you may not be able to turn off. Its the sound the button makes when you hit it. I don’t think its too distracting as long as you are aware of it so you don’t hit the button so hard. just lightly tap.

Yes, that was the slight (yet deafening) sound. It was merely the mechanics of the plastic being pushed by my thick thumb. I normally don’t take reading material with me to Adoration but that time I did. Our hour is different, I guess. As each conversation with Our Lord differs as well.

I use my ipod touch (with the sound turned off) before Mass and in Adoration. It saves having to carry a rosary, a bible, Christian Prayer, etc on the bus. And if someone asks me about it, I show them what I’m doing. And if they still have a problem, then it is there beef.

Now if I could only use it during Mass, to skip the horrible parts, like when the priest asks for money, or when the choir sings.

I use an iPod Touch for many of the same things. But you should still carry a rosary always.

It’s quite wonderful when one develops the ability with God’s grace to ignore such annoyances. Pray on it and ask for the grace to be able to ignore such things as you focus on Him. It will help you at adoration and at other places as well. Millions of people no doubt adore God in the Most Blessed Sacrament under far more difficult and distracting conditions.

I think the GOOD thing is the OP realizing that what they were doing was something that could be annoying to others, and in an effort to not annoy others, is working to not do what is annoying,.

While there are things we have to ignore (the sound of a rustling baby, or a person who sneezes, or the sound of a person who walks with some limp or something), there are things which can be avoided. There are other ways to get what is available on the Kindle and NOT make any noise - or come to CAF and ask how to cut the sound.

I think that while there are things to ignore and just deal with, if we are the culprit and can avoid those things, we should do just that!

Why come? I mean, Rosaries are good and nice and all of that.

I do Rosaries all the time, but I often count on my fingers… I used to use my Palm for the Rosary (each click would be the same as saying the ‘Amen’ - ok, I still said Amen, but the machine and I were simpatico at this point)

Is there some rule about using Rosaries? I’m not trying to be dense. I have not heard of this, and would like to do the correct thing. Is there a ‘must’ to using the Rosary when saying a Rosary?

I think that kids are most likely of all the age groups to recognize that a person using an electronic technology device is very likely using it in a reverent way during Mass. Kids know about these things, especially if their parents teach them.

If I still had children, and we were at Mass or Adoration, I would actually point out the person using the device and whisper, “Look, honey, that person is using a computer to read the Bible instead of just following in the missal. Isn’t that cool?” Or I would wait until after the Mass or Adoration and tell them about the PDA and the use of it in sacred settings.

And then of course, my child would want the electronic device. And I would try very hard to buy one for them, on the condition that they use it during Mass or Adoration. And I’m sure they would do so, and that would be awesome! Of course, someone would probably frown at them and think bad thoughts about them (“Look at that young whippersnapper playing games during Mass!”)

But most people, especially kids, are so used to these devices now that I hardly think a scandal is likely.

And so are elderly people. My 80-year-old farmer father knows all about the tech devices, even though he personally doesn’t use them. But he knows that others use them, including his old farmer pals.

During the quiet and solemn hush of my Holy Hour last night I kept finding myself being horribly distracted by that incessant and repetitive sound…and it was I who was the cuckoo doing the kuh-CLICKING!

I didn’t want to say it but I get annoyed at older people who are hard of hearing and accustomed to speaking their prayers under their breath. When the chapel or church is near empty and all quiet the sounds carry. Some of these can get pretty loud and are not even conscious of it. But worse of all is when the older volunteer ushers congregate before and after mass and start talking loudly (due to hearing problems) as people try to pray.

The reverence levels in general seem to be dropping pretty badly these days. Except for some crying children now and then I recall in the pre Vatican II days that one could hear a pin drop in church. If somone accidentally banged their kneeler on the floor the sound reverberated throughout the whole church so loudly you wanted to just “die” with embarrassment for them or self.

haha, my kindle comes on Tuesday! I’m so excited, the only reason I purchased it was to load it with Saints writings, etc. since they are mostly free online to download but I really dislike reading on a computer screen. I hope the clicking isn’t as loud as you say, as I will most certainly be using it in church.

I use my Blackberry for morning and evening prayers. I have taken it into church during adoration for help with Chaplets and Litanies. My phone alarm also reminds me when it’s 3 o’clock and time for the 3 o’clock Divine Mercy prayer.

A rosary is a blessed sacramental. An electronic device, while helpful (as I said, I use them too) is not blessed nor a sacramental. Why should you carry a rosary always? I suppose it comes down to whether or not you find value in sacramentals at all. Is there value in wearing a scapular, or a crucifix or a medal? Is it a must? No. Neither is saying a rosary. However, historically Catholics have found value in them. That’s all I’m saying.

I feel compelled to comment on the secondhand smoke. It really affects some people, more than you’d realize. It actually makes a few people physically ill, and can trigger an asthma attack, sad to say.

I applied for a job at a hospital that’s devoted to treating cancer, and one of the conditions of employment? You CANNOT SMOKE. And…if you lie and tell them you do not, and you have the smell of smoke on your person when you report for work, that’s grounds for termination.

As to the electronic books? I personally think they are a godsend. I don’t have a kindle, though, have a nook, and there’s a feature that will let you swipe your finger across the lower screen to turn the page, so no noise;0)
I have a kindle app and a B&N app on my I phone, also. They come in very handy.

Rosaries are bristling with symbolism, including but not limited to a crucifix, and many feature a St. Benedict Medal. These are powerful against evil and demons of all kinds. Just seeing someone carrying a rosary can change the attitude of thieves or violent attackers in a moment.

These benefits do not arise if using a Kindle or your fingers. By all means, use any method you find efficacious, but it is highly advisable to carry a rosary as well!

My Kindle doesn’t click when I turn the pages… I have the imitation of Christ and the lives of the Saints on my Kindle-it is no different than reading a book.

It is just text to read so it isn’t a performance. And I think it may not be available for all books. But I have listened in my car. You can adjust the speed, I have found I do adjust to speeding it up.
I was amazed and sad when I heard how loud the click sounded in the chapel. I guess it is so quiet in there. I have two Bibles on mine and other "free’ kindle books.

Great to hear. I had been agonizing over getting a seperate Kindle or getting an ipad or a device that had it all in one phone, wi-fi, network, Internet, ebooks etc. I opted for the kindle being a larger format and improved contrast and ultra long battery life. I ordered the cover equipped with the night time LED light that can illuminate it - should be great for bed time reading.

Another very nice thing is that Amazon gives a very substantial price discount for ebook format and downloads over regular paper books (20% I think). Plus all the savings on shipping costs and immediate availability for download. I am hoping to develop a substantial library. Amazon lets you download to up to 6 registered devices too so I can still opt to re-download ebooks to other cell phones and ipads etc. that I am waiting to get when 4G wireless gets widely available. The only negative I have it that we can’t cut and paste text into other apps or email apparently (I can see where copyright laws don’t want to permit that). It would be so nice to be able to have handy electronic cut-paste quotes when doing research, apologetics and writing etc.

I would never have thought that I would want one. I got one as a gift and absolutely love it. It is so convenient-for instance when we go to Mexico in the spring I used take a dozen paperbacks with me to read on the beach. This year I just took my Kindle. I also subscribe to the Houston Chronicle so I can follow my beloved Astros- it costs me seven dollars a month and the current edition is on my Kindle when I get up every morning
