My 12 year old son was born to two cradle Catholics, baptized in a Catholic Church and attends Catholic school. About 3 years ago, mother decided to join Methodist church, and insists on having our son attend church with her 1x per month. She tells our son he is Catholic and Methodist, I have told my son he cannot be Catholic and another religion. It is correct to say he attends two churches, but he is only of the Catholic faith. My son prefers the Catholic Church.
Am I correct in telling my son he cannot be Catholic and another religion? Will he have to make a decision when it comes time for the sacrament of Confirmation?
Thanks for any help and guidance.
Keep praying with your son and educate him in the Faith-this *cannot *be left to CCD. My 17 yr. od NeoPagan (literally) sister knew more about the Catholic Church and could defend Her better than anyone in my Confirmation class. The main point to get across to him is that the Catholic Church is the will of the Father, established by the Son, and continued through the Holy Ghost, not to mentioned protected by the Blessed Mother. Encourage devotion to her, pray the Rosary daily with him, at least one decade to start, and work your way up. If Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is available at your parish, or a parish near you, take him. If not, just time before the Tabernacle (a particular favorite of mine.) Keep him focused, keep Holy Water readily available, read together the lives of the Saints, especially the ones who fought against Protestant heresies (as they did this with love for God *and *souls). Most important, example! Be the best example you can be so scandal is not caused. Keep him under the Protecting mantle of Our Lady and she will keep him near Jesus. God Bless.

Nope, but it helps to explain the chip on his shoulder.
I’m sure that he meant that he can’t stand Protestantism, not Protestants. I personally (Irish, German, Italian) dislike, no, hate Protestantism, but I still love non Catholics, as a Christian should. Anyway, I could be wrong, but I’m sure that’s what he meant (right, lukewarm?):o

lukewarm may have a chip, but to be honest he also has a wounded heart. 😦

I didnt grow up in any particular church because of that particular wound. Mom said let me decide, there was too much conflict. So I eventually found my way, Gods good.

Which is why someone like myself and probably the son of the op will likely reject all churches if not handled correctly.

The day I discovered there actually was a God who really did care for me, under the piles of church confusion, was the best in my life.

So while there is this protestant/catholic thing just to remind you all there is also a church goer/never really been thing too. 😉

All I can say is
“Home, its hard to know what it is when youve never had one”.

or he will see religion divides and reject church and God with it cause the whole thing hurts too much.
Cha-ching! Exactly!

“God is love” + “that dude hates that other dude in the name of Jesus” = people reject God on account of an ugly testimony.

Or, “that dude doesn’t like that other dude in the name of Jesus” = rejection of God on account of an ugly testimony.

Or, “that dude won’t have anything to do with that other dude in the name of Jesus.”

Or phrase it any of a dozen other ways. The point is the same. The result is the same.

It also makes for a serious chastizing of the Hateful Dude with Jesus in heaven, assuming that Hateful Dude gets to heaven. One thing I do not want God to chastize me on is causing a division among Christians. Puh-leeze, there’s enough ugliness in the world without us turning our backs on one another.

The very thought that Protestants such as John Wesley have nothing to teach us is a grossly immature thought. There, I said it. I have read Wesley. I’ve also read the Catholic Encyclopedia. As far as I can tell Wesley’s soteriology is the same as Catholic soteriology. He comes at it from a different perspective, and a different perspective can be a very good thing to read. Etc for other giants in history.

Oh really. Puhleeze.

You mean to tell me that Pope Benedictus has not studied any protestant writings.
Probably… in order to refute them…

“Your Best Life Now!” “go pray for that huge expensive house, God will give you that house”, LOL O.K. how theologically bankrupt can you get? This is what is contained in the sea of garbage #1 sellers protestants churn out seemingly weekly.

Just one guys opinion…

If Wesley’s soteriology is the same as Catholic soteriology what exactly did he add that the I couldn’t garner from the Catholic Church?

I still stick by my advice to attend both worship services as a family if at all possible and to ensure you gently reinforce Catholic doctrine with your son…and GENTLY work on your wife to bring her back to the CHURCH…ST. Monica is a good prayer partner for this issue.

“Dude,” nobody is saying to hate anybody because of religion. If that’s what you’re hearing/seeing than you’re either paranoid or you know Protestantism is very wrong but won’t admit to it. You don’t want to be held accountable for causing division among Christians…? what ecclesial community do you belong to again? Oh yeah, multiple ones. We Catholics are simply encouraging the father to make his stand as head of the home and not allow his son to be confused by error. That child’s focus needs to be on the Truth, not multiple (erroneous) interpretations of the Truth; in other words, LIES. To allow his son to think that any religion is okay is a lie. Jesus prayed for unity, Jesus established a Church, by the will of the Almighty Father in Heaven, and which is continued here on earth in the Catholic Church by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Why would anyone want their child to have what is so-so when they could have the best. There are innumerable graces in the Catholic Church that the denominations do not have: Holy Eucharist, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Confession, Fathers in the faith…and of course, the sanction of our Father who is in Heaven. Why would anyone want to chance their child losing all of that and more, simply to be the “nice guy,” which as Scripture points out, Jesus was not at all times. Jesus rebuked, Jesus chased sinners out of the Temple. Jesus was not a, let me choose my words carefully…a butt-kisser.

The Holy Father is not a child with a child’s still-forming mind. He knows the Faith, has spent many years studying it, and is firmly grounded in it. If he chooses to look at other religions, so what? You absolutely NEVER do that with a child.

If your 17 year old absolutely refuses to go to Mass despite reason, prayer, threats and enticements on your part, but is willing to go to a Methodist Church what do you do? Insist that he stay home or allow him to go to the Methodist service?

Would I allow my child to attend a community that mocks the words of Jesus? Hmmm, let me think, NO! That child would be having discussions at home and with a holy, orthodox priest to explain how he could believe something like that. When he, or she, moved out they’re free to do as they choose. However, the OP is concerned with a 12 yr. old, not 17. Big difference.

Personally, I think he could be. Let him have his own opinion, for God’s sake! But if you want him to be a traditional Catholic, then absaloutly not. But, seeing as it is his beliefs we are talking about and not yours, it doesn’t really matter in the long run what you want. It is his own personaly path, and you should let him live it if he wants to.

But does a 12 year olds opinion matter anymore than a 17 year old? Or a 40 year old? I don’t think so…

So, you would insist that the 17 year old stay home and miss Mass rather than attend a Methodist Church?

where does that cc state that protestantism is a sin?
Catechism:

817: In fact, “in this one and only Church of God from its very beginnings there arose certain rifts, which the Aostle strongly censures as damnable. But in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions appeared…”

Popes have always condemned it, and as Catholics (see the Baltimore Catechism…approved by the Church!) we’re forbidden to participate in such services under pain of mortal sin.
