This is a purely what if thread. I am not saying that i believe in aliens; but i am interested in the phenomena regardless of their existence. I have watched the film “fire in the sky”, which i enjoyed and is the inspiration for this thread.

I was wondering, from a philosophical perspective, is there any rational reason for them to travel vast distances to abduct people?

Aliens have their own unique sense of humor. It’s also possible their god told them to do it. Or it could just be a programing error.

They are probably just studying us, much like when we discover something new, we capture it to study it.

As for traveling so quickly, they probably have discovered new types of fuels that have different properties, allowing quicker travel.

Curiosity!

Why did Columbus sail all the way to the West Indies and bring home some of the native people to show off in Spain?

Why do we have zoos?

Curiosity!👍

If they would promise to bring me home, I might go with them…

… my dear friend ,

… good q , my own unique take on aliens briefly : when man fell and lost the garden of eden we need to know the garden of eden is symbolic of reality , having lost reality our whole world – universe , cosmos , man and everything here has been turned sort of upside down or into the opposite of reality in various ways , this is a necessity as god cannot allow imperfection like evils to exist in realiy , but in this delusion he can because what occurs in the delusion is not really real at all , long story this though …

… but to cut to the chase , if i am correct and i think i am , then the aliens and their worlds were turned into non - reality by mans fall , this is impossible due to gods infinite qualities such as justice and mercy , why should aliens suffer because of man ??? , it cannot be …

… but the q arises could god providentially arrange for the aliens to fall also at the exact same time man did ??? , i don’t think so , the odds are too astronimcal and it just doesn’t make sense , i’m talking about intelligent aliens though , maybe they have a sort of free will to do gods will and god cannot violate it ??? , who knows ???

… but in any event why assume aliens are evil like man and want to abduct and / or harm him ??? , perhaps the aliens are sinless ??? , in any case i personally have no doubts there are no aliens but also no life at all apart from our planet in the entire universe , my own opine , in other words evolution is a load of codswallop …

… may god bless and love you 👍🙂 ,

I think some reported Unidentified Flying Objects exist, they just probably aren’t alien spaceships. 😉

If aliens did travel all the way to earth, why would they remain semi-hidden and occasionally abduct people? Well, who can say what an advanced non-human biological intelligence would do or why? Would they even have intellects and wills like ours? I have the general impression (mostly from a few junky popular science articles so don’t take my word on it) that by certain tests crows and ravens are about as intelligent as great apes, but their brains are built extremely differently from those of mammals so their “minds” are presumably very different. Could be a similar situation here, only perhaps even more so.

Otherwise scientific knowledge could be an obvious reason, either for its own sake or for some practical future purpose- maybe the destruction or enslavement of humanity, or for medical/biotechnological advances either to help themselves or even to help us in the future. There are plenty of other possibilities too. I recently read an Isaac Asimov short story, one of the relatively few of his that dealt with aliens (and also one of his more morally edifying in my opinion, which they are not always), in which monkey-like, flying saucer-flying aliens abducted someone in order to talk to him and eventually figure out how to start a nuclear war on earth, which they desired for reasons that they themselves believed to be benevolent. In the end he had his memory of the event wiped out and was returned to earth. Really, a virtually infinite number of other possibilities could be imagined.

If aliens do exist - and I think it entirely possible – it does NOT automatically follow that they abduct people.

They want our digital watches.

If aliens are here, and if they’re abducting people, it’s logical to assume it’s for research purposes. I could buy the idea of a sufficiently advanced race wanting to observe a planet populated by a more “primitive” species.

However, I don’t believe we’ve been visited by any kind of extraterrestrial race. It’s not impossible, but given the sheer scale of the universe, I would rate it as highly unlikely. As for travel, if a race could travel across the galaxy, it could be assumed that they have found a way to get around that pesky speed of light barrier (Maybe the ship is powered by neutrinos! 😛 ) or found a way to preserve themselves somehow through cryogenic slumber while their ship drifts through space.

And why indeed should they keep their promises, when once they get you on their ship, they could vivisect or enslave you???

I admit there could be aliens; the scale of the cosmos makes that a definite possibilty. I do not, however, believe in visitations or abductions. That same scale makes them wildly unlikely.

But if aliens do exist, it follows that Peoples claims about being abducted are more likely to be true. Ever seen the film “fire in the sky”, the travis walton abduction? If an alien landed today i think we would have to take peoples claims of abduction more seriously, and consider that alien a possible threat.

Do you agree?

They need women. I thought this was settled long ago…
They should start with the Kardashians.

Mind: Why? Most reasonable answer is biological studies. How they traveled? Not by ordinary means, only way to cover that sort distance without the time involved (which the crew would die of old age) is I think the term is sub-dimensionally or inter-dimensionally. They would have to have a way to bend space-time.

Question to all here. If other rational/intellective life existed outside of Earth, how does this reconcile with God’s ever loving nature and salvific desire for all? So here on earth people have the truth and other life on other planets do not, why?
