Speaking in tongues: genuine charism or silly gibberish?

So your saying the benefit of the gift is directed toward self.
Shouldn’t it be for the edification and teaching of the community?
1 Cor 14:5

Eventually, the benefit IS to the community. As the person grows in openness to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, that person contributes to the community in whatever ways God intends. If we remember that all Good comes from God, it is easy to see what happens. In other words, for many, the gift of tongues is merely a step towards becoming God’s instrument in the world. It is not an end in itself.
God bless!🙂

I’m curious … how do we know they got the same message.
One person gives their interpretation and the other says, “yeah, me too”.

They both spoke it out at the same time in unison.

Folks,

I really wish I had someone who knew more on this subject. Back when I was a teenager living at home I was sleeping on the couch. I was on the couch because of a headach that I had been batteling for a few weeks. Anyway a close member of the family was expecting a child and the child was born. Now I heard the father of the child speaking to my Dad as I was waking up from sleep. I was on the couch and they were standing in the door to the kitchen. I remember thinking to myself, God bless that baby, Oh God bless the little one I am so happy Jesus please bless this new life. I woke up and sat up on the couch and quickly stood up. What I wanted to say were those words I had thought of just seconds before (above). What came out was something completely different. I started making a series of sounds and noises that made my father and the friend crack up laughing at me. It was frusterating because what I wanted to say was just praise about blessing the baby and all of these other sounds came pouring out. It lasted about 30 seconds. 30 seconds of what i can only describe as my mouth knowing exactly what it was doing and my mind being in shock at what my mouth was doing. I was thinking prayers for the baby and my mouth was making nosies that I never heard before that or since. I KNOW now that I was speaking in tounges. I know because my mouth was so certain of the noise and movements needed to make those noises. I have seen online the folks that claim to speak in tounges but they aren’t doing what my mouth did that night. I have never done it since but would love to experience it again as I am older and wouldn’t be as alarmed. If anyone knows if it can happen again or how to make it come back again I would appreciate it. 🙂

Welcome, LLB! 👋

I’m not sure if what you experienced was genuine speaking in tongues or just that joyful time of being half-awake. 😉

Either way, you could always pray to the Holy Spirit to grant you that gift. 🙂

Joe,

I can’t imagine it being anything other than that…if you had heard it you would probably understand also that it had to be. It didn’t sound like jibberish it was words completely formed but just in a different language. I honestly remember being kind of shocked and looking down at my mouth because it knew what it was doing and I didn’t.

You were the one who was there, so I believe you. 🙂

I only said that because I had a similar expereince, only not spoken. When I was in high school, I remember once dozing off (with the light still on) while I was saying my prayers beside my bed. When I started to slowly come to, my thoughts were all jumbled into words that didn’t make sense to me. It was like another language. Only after I had fully awoken did my thoughts return in English. I always chalked it up to being half asleep. But maybe I was interiorly praying in tongues. 🤷 It’s possible. At the time, I had no idea what “speaking in tongues” even meant.

Have you heard of Franciscan University of Steubenville? You could try going to their Charismatic Conference. There will be plenty of speaking in tongues going on there! It’s usually the first weekend in June, so I’m guessing it would be June 5-7, 2009.

Like I said, at the time I had no idea. It was years later that I put praying and the noise together and came up with speaking in tounges. I have never heard of those folks. I will check out the link you sent. I have looked online to see if I could find anything like it and I have not been able to. I have seen some folks on You tube trying to speak in tounges but it’s not even close. Again, the only thing that convinces me is the way that my mouth knew what it was doing and my eyes even looked down to see what the heck was going on. I will never forget it.

I don’t personally speak in tongues but I don’t mind it when others do. I think it’s carrying it too far to think it should be normative for every Catholic. Oswald Sobrino goes to that far-out extreme on his blog Catholic Analysis.

There are other spiritual gifts or charisms…administration is one (that I am lacking) and giving with liberality is another (with which I am blessed). I don’t know why tongues is such a big deal. Seems like administration and giving with liberality get more of the work of the Church done, for the benefit of everybody. 😃

I have had a few experiences within CCR groups. During one experience, I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. I sensed pure Love coursing through me. I just wanted the Spirit to use me as He would. Beyond the first few syllables, I had no idea what I was saying – neither sounds nor meaning. I felt as though I had no control over my tongue, except, perhaps to be able to stop. It was moving so quickly. If it wasn’t for the Love, I would have been afraid.
I tried some time later with another group. I know it wasn’t real. Since then, I have experienced the Holy Spirit in various ways, but not through tongues.
So, I feel that Charismatics are sincere. Some are actually receiving special graces. Others are merely trying. The answer may be to “Let go and let God.”
jude,
The only way this could be classified as gibberish is, the Holy Spirit wasn’t imvolved.
Ralph Martin, a noted Catholic has appeared on EWTN and introduced the Cursillo Movement. This is a Charismatic movement which he heads.

God bless,

ken,
As you mentioned, tongues are one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which he gives as he determines. See 1Cor.12:11
The Bible also teaches prophecy is the greater gift.
A person who speaks in tongues speaks to God the Father. 🙂

“Let go and let God.”
This was the theme of a CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) weekend I attended.

“Let go, let God”

Love it.
Seeing you quote it brought back great memories of that journey and the fellowship of the men on that retreat.

Goes to show that we never know how we affect others in what we say and do.
Thanks.

Hi, LLB!

…though I do not deny your experience (Yahweh God’s Way is not without its mysteries), I think that my greater problem with “speaking in tongues” is exactly what you are asking… I believe that since we were created in the image and likeness of God we can achieve wondrous things (learn new languages, complex science and mathematics, speed reading/speaking/walking…, drive various machines, even program a microwave/DVD rec…) but we can never compel the Gifts of the Holy Spirit on-demand!

Speaking in tongues, as all other Gifts, is a Grace given to us by the Holy Spirit–it can never be a skill that we can hone through trial, concentration, and self-will.

Hi, kentuckyliz!

I concur! I think that, as in many walks of life, “glare” is more fashionable than “share;” i.e.: praying for Vocations is a fantastic service to the Body but there’s hardly any light shinning on it.

This is exactly the point, it should be for the benefit of the church, not the individual.
What is the need for a Charismatic Community to speak in tongues when everyone in attendance understands English?

There are many varieties of tongues, so you cannot assume that, since your experience was different, it was not authentic. What you experienced is what is written about in the NT.

1 Cor 14:2-3
2 For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit.

At such times the mind goes into neutral, and the mouth prays that which fills the heart. In your case, it was an intercession for the life of the child. this prayer went from your heart to God’s heart, while your mind stood by and watched. 😉

Even though others present may have laughed at you, God knew the desire of your heart:

Rom 8:26-27

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

1 Cor 14:13-14
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive.”

I think it is this “unproductivity” of the mind that bothers most Westerners. We are so accustomed to praying with the mind, that having the mind sit by and watch is very unsettling for most.

I hope you will nurture this great gift in yourself, and continue to pray through the spirit for your family, and anyone else the Lord lays on your heart. 👍

It’s gibberish…many Penecostal / or Non-Denominational who claim to speak tongues actually speak gibberish. It’s not the same speaking of tongues as mention in Acts

This experience is not uncommon among the mystical saints. It emerges out of a deep place of prayer which is consciously reached through the practice of contemplation more common in the East. This is our natural state during sleep, where we access the deepest parts of the soul without the interferance of the waking mind. To nurture this, you could develop these meditative prayer practices so that your soul can return to that state of pure intercession you experienced just before and as you became fully awake.

I have experienced this in my dreams, also. During the dream, the spirit/soul are awake, but the mind is asleep.

I decided to look up a website on this topic that is not based upon a specific church’s beliefs and I think this is one
bible.org/page.php?page_id=393
It uses scripture from the bible. It doesn’t say what translation it is.
