I 100% agree with you Arkguy…there are some many Catholics here that talk about the authority of the Catholic church being correct, but yet they dismiss this when the pope has even said ok to it. Isn’t this funny?? All of the sudden is the pope and Catholic church not correct on this?? What is the deal?? It would seem to me that the Catholics that are saying such things like this is blasphemy when the pope has approved it…well is that not blasphemy?? I guarantee you that the ones that are putting this movement down so bad that the Catholic church has approved that you can go to other threads they have posted on and all they do is talk about the Catholic church and the authority being the only one. Very interesting I must say!! 🤷
Glad you two brought this up. What is happening is that the Pope and a bunch of other high-ranking people are saying that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is great and has approval. However, this does not mean that their approval is a doctrine which must be accepted and believed. Therefore, Catholics have a choice about believing or not. You are right – it can get very interesting.

This is my “granny” opinion. Because the Charismatic Renewal actually focuses on the spiritual life of the Church, we should give it a lot of respect even if some are not interested in it.

Blessings,
granny

Has anyone here spoken in Tongues?I am particularly interested in hearing from those who have done so prior to converting to Catholicism. All others are welcome too.🙂
don’t we use our tongues every time we speak to enunciate words :p:p:p

I believe God is not limited in how He chooses to bless us.
This fact does not mean those that ‘speak in tongues’ are actually experiencing a gift from God rather than manufacturing this themselves.

watch Benny Hinn he has to be manufacturing all he has to say

Every item or action (or inaction) in this universe is the result of a preceding cause.

We can start with your existence and trace back every cause.
At a high level … you are the result of your parents … back to the first life on the planet … back to the creation of our planet as the result of multiple masses colliding and combining as they revolved around the sun … back to the creation of our galaxy … back to the creation of the universe.

we trace back each cause for each result … it goes back to the first cause.

What caused the creation of the universe? What was that first cause for which nothing preceded it.

For our conversation, I define God as that first cause.

The term ‘creation’ carries a lot of baggage, and I don’t agree to your premise that there was a beginning. Who’s to say there was a beginning? I don’t know, and neither do you.

What does this have to do with anything?

To be on topic, speaking in tongues is babbling. Take offense if you will.
If you actually believe it means anything, record it and show it to historical linguists.
This is a reliable way to prove that you are speaking a language that you yourself do not know. If no linguist can make any sense of it… guess what?

You’re making it up.

How did the discussion of does God exist or are atheists really atheists get on The Speaking in Tongues thread?

cazayoux chose to hijack the thread at post 125.
I swear I had nothing to do with it. 🙂

I am not Catholic, but I do pray in tongues.(I’m not Pentecostal either, I’m Lutheran and considering Catholic) I would agree that it is a “prayer language” and I use it really only to pray and when I have no words of my own. For me it often draws me away from this world and it is as if I am with those in Heaven interceeding and praising our Lord with the angels.

If I remember the history right while some Christians were denying that God could or would give some the gift to pray or speak in tongues an atheist dropped in to say belief in God is strange enough but to believe that God would give this gift is perhaps the strangest thing about Christianity.

I guess when ou begin to deny that God can or will do something you do open up the question about there being a God.

Praise the Lord! Its a wonderful tool and blessing of God. Would be interesting to hear how you came upon this experience as a Lutheran and also to me what is drawing you to Catholicism.

If this is a test, I choose number 3. However, my family will tell you that I should pick number 2. And since I told my granddaughter that I want to be Mary Poppins when I grow up, maybe I should change my answer to number 1.

Am I babbling? Am I telling the truth? If so, which number? Does the true statement make sense? Are you a linguist? Am I serious or am I laughing? Do I need to go to bed since I am getting silly?

Well there are approximately 600 million people in the world today that are insane then. I’ll gladly be a fool for Christs sake. Although the bible says “The fool says there is no God”.

O.K. Arkguy and anybody else…

We are on the thread at the same time. How about three minutes actually praying in prayer tongues wherever we are. Then it is bed for me since I did get silly in a post somewhere above this.

Blessings,
granny

Thanks Granny, what a blessing, but hard to stop after 3 minutes. I really felt the Spirit of God and I also prayed for all who have been partaking in this thread for understanding and love and guidance.

they are not NEEDED. They are extra helps.

And it seems reasonable to think that God gives his gifts as he sees fit. So if God gives such gifts, that’s the end of it. The Church can’t be imprisoned within a book, not even the Bible. Jesus wasn’t - why should Christians be ?

if you’re looking for physics to help you … give it up. The law of causation in physics doesn’t extend to the origins of the universe. It is true that everything we can observe is caused by something. Even things separated by space and time can exert a causal relationship on one another. However, we cannot know if this general rule of causation can be applied to the singularity from which the universe is thought to have began.

In fact we don’t even have a unified theory of physics yet. A consensus is building that there are many more than four dimensions (dimensions we’ve never observed or encountered). So we really have no idea (in fact we can’t even discern whether the universe we live in is the result of an infinite chain of creation and implosion, or whether there are other realities in other dimensions, etc. etc.).

Your line of reasoning is commonly used by Christian apologists & it’s such a simplistic and fallacious line of reasoning … that it has no merit.

Also, whoever is wondering are atheists really atheists, golly that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard (you know when they say there’s no such thing as a dumb question … well, they’re lying)🙂

Granny…you are right…very interesting and way over my head!! But the Charismatic Reneweal actually deserves the respect but it is almost like your own church family is not, I guess you would say “supporting” but tearing you down spiritually…is this a fair statement to make or assume?? My inlaws attend a Charismatic movement with the Catholic church like one a month or something like that. She tells me that if they brought it into regular mass the people would flip out. I kind of feel bad because they have to search out these groups and attend to get the fullness of what they want but yet still be Catholic. And only get that every so often. I just couldn’t deal with that and only worshipping God the way I feel led once a month . Thank God I am Pentecostal. To me it sounds like having something approved but having to fight then about it being this and being that. Anyway, hope it all comes together for your group.

I learned about speaking in tongues when I was in confirmation classes, but did not begin to use this gift until I lapsed from my Catholic faith, and sojourned in Protestant communities for many years, most of them Pentecostal, or influenced by Pentecostals.
I am curious but do they know what they are saying when they speak in such a manner, and for that fact do others? if no one can understand what’s being said, what would be the point of such a gift? How do you know if a person is faking it?

I myself have witnessed someone speaking in tongues, I’m not sure what to make of it. I’m somewhat suspicious however.I know people can receive this gift according to the Bible, but not sure as to what the whole purpose of such a gift would be.
These are very good questions. Pardon me if they have been addressed further up the thread. There are many varieties of tongues. One of them is for private prayer, and is just for the building up of the individual believer. The person does not necessarily understand the words, nor do they need to do so. It is a way of the Spirit praying through the person, interceding according to His will for our lives. It does not emanate from the mind, and is not “rational”.

As far as “faking it”, sometimes it is difficult to tell. However, you shall know them by their fruits.
