1 Cor 14:2-3
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

The reason this variety of tongues should not be used in the public service is because it cannot be understood by others, and if it is not interpreted, is not useful to the others.

1 Cor 14:4-5
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

Private prayer in tongues builds up the individual in the Spirit.

Eph 6:18
18 Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Rom 8:26-27

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 27 And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

The private prayer use of the gift of tongues is yielding to the Spirit, and allowing the Spirit to pray through one, disengaging the mind.

1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful…
I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
Your posts have given some good information. Thank you.

Here’s a question from my own experience.

When I pray to God, I give Him glory and praise. I petition Him for my needs. I tell Him I am sorry for my sins. I thank Him for all He has done for me and for others. These kinds of prayers are also prayed out loud during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

It is my understanding that the Holy Spirit uses my voice box, tongue, and speech muscles to form new sounds and new words which are also the same type of prayers as above. The term for these new sounds is prayer tongues, the common gift of the Holy Spirit. It is not the higher gift of tongues which needs to be interpreted in order to instruct others - to build up the church.

Considering that Jesus said "Where two or more are gathered…

Can my friends and I meet together and pray out loud using our prayer tongues?

Blessings,
granny

All humanity should praise their Creator.

I’m curious – What was your reaction as you read my reply–#172?
I could have picked it apart, but I brushed it off as just being silly.
Though it is hard to tell whether a christian is being silly or is serious sometimes. 😉

That’s funny I did not find in any of these verses the idea of praying in tongues/gibberish. The verse that says praying in the spirit, where is tongues here? It just says praying in the spirit and that is all. The verse in 1 cor. 14 is refering to a known language. When the wrod tongue is used it means a known language.

Excellent answer.

Post 172 is a silly parody of the way comments about prayer tongues are expressed as if there were no other possibilities.

The most popular comments center around the validity of prayer tongues. Is it real? How does one know? Does the pray-er know what he is praying? A very close second are all the observations of excessives. The third most popular comments want to know where all this nonsense is in the Bible, with emphasis on the word nonsense.

To me, the general impression is that conclusions about prayer tongues have been set in stone. In other words, just like a multiple choice test – no other possible answers allowed. Therefore I chose the format of a multiple-choice test as my parody with one question and only three options. The question was "If no one can make sense of what the pray-er is saying…guess what? The three answers would be 1. Prayer tongues is fake, i.e., one is imagining it. 2. The pray-er is either nuts or caught up in the excitement. 3. God would never suggest such a silly thing. Even if He did, He would be more specific with a printed manual that has an expiration date.

So in the parody, I take the test. Since I believe in a personal God Who interacts with us, I start out by choosing # 3. However, I don’t want to think that there is whispering behind my back regarding my mental capabilities. My family would soften this by saying that I just got excited in the heat of the moment. So, I decide to change to answer number #2. I can admit my fault and get on with my life. But, my conscience kicks in. It is true that I told my granddaughter that I want to be Mary Poppins when I grow up. She giggled because she knew I was making it up. Guess what? Maybe I am really making up my prayer tongues. Consequently, I finally settle on answer #1.

As to the questions which followed the test, they are kind of a parody of questions which can be asked. But first. The Holy Spirit is captive to no camp. Second. Since St. Paul, there have been a number of great saints who have practiced and preached other forms of spirituality. There are a lot of characters and opposing personalities, as well as a fair share of mudgies in Catholicism so as far as individuals, one size does not fit all. What does unite all is the belief in the Real Presence of Jesus, Our Savior, in the Eucharist also called the Blessed Sacrament. Third. Catholic Charismatic Renewal is basicially aimed at stirring into flame the Catholic Faith. Why this is needed is a topic for another thread. Some people would offer that Christianity as a whole is in a period similar to the challenges of the early Church.

Those pesky questions at the end of the original post basically ask – Is there a possibility that the babbling sound of prayer tongues actually has a true purpose? What would be the true purpose of prayer tongues in today’s world? Is there more than one answer? Can the Holy Spirit give a gift to a pray-er which doesn’t make sense at first? Is prayer tongues really a language requiring a linguist or an interpreter? Is it God Who understands the meaning of prayer tongues which appear to be babbling? In what way should we take the renewal of gifts? Can God teach by example as well as by words in Scripture? Are prayer tongues serious or should we consider them a passing fad? How many kinds of tongues are there? Could it be that God wishes us to communicate with Him by a humble offering of ourselves through prayer tongues?

Blessings,
granny

All human life is sacred.

One must ask first of all what is the pupose for tongues? Answers must be based on what the Bible says and not on experiece. We all know that people claim to be able to speak in tongues but what they do does not fit with the Bible. Biblical tongues like the gifts of mirsacles and healing are are to by used for the service of others and not for indiviual private usage.
Tongues is not not gibberish but known languages. Tongues are sign gifts like mircales and healing given to the apostles, and to those whom they acknowledge, to authenticate their message. They are NOT a private prayer language. Gifts 1 Peter 4:10-11
**As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another **as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
NASU

1 Cor. 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Jude1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

You must understand that many today are confused when it comes to the gift of tongues. The reason being is there are different purposes of the Holy Spirit when using tongues.

Firstly, all who believe, who have been born again and have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit have the ability to pray in tongues in their personal prayer life.

Now, this is not to be confused with tongues in the church. For the prayer tongue is just that, personal and is very seldom used in church.

Now, the gift of tongues for the edification of the church is that which a man prays to receive after he has already received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This tongue is done in church and is immediately followed by interpretation. If an interpretor is not present, then the one with the gift of tongues is to quench the spirit and not speak in tongues. This tongue and interpretation is from God and is for the edification of the church. There have been times this tongue is given in an unknown tongue or in a foreign language tongue as in the day of Pentecost.

As for the personal prayer tongue, it is for the edification of the believer only, for it is the Holy Spirit making intercession for the saint, praying the perfect prayer the man is incapable of praying.

1 Cor. 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Please don’t stop with verse 2 go on. 1 Cor 14:3-5
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
NASU

The great emphasis is on prophecy because it is a more prophitable gift. But like prophecy they both are not needed today because we have the Bible.

I am not Catholic, but I do pray in tongues.(I’m not Pentecostal either, I’m Lutheran and considering Catholic) I would agree that it is a “prayer language” and I use it really only to pray and when I have no words of my own. For me it often draws me away from this world and it is as if I am with those in Heaven interceeding and praising our Lord with the angels.

How do you learn to pray in tongues it soind like rubbish to me,just my opinion

How do you learn to pray in tongues it soind like rubbish to me,just my opinion
Are you looking for general information about praying in prayer tongues? Does the idea sound like rubbish to you? Or are you referring to the actual prayer sounds as sounding like rubbish, etc. Or are you referring to yourself as learning? Why would you want to learn how to pray in something so unfamiliar?

How do you learn to pray in tongues it soind like rubbish to me,just my opinion
You are correct. Tongues that are around today are just gibberish. They are not the tongues as found in the Bible. Biblical tongues are known languages of the time.

That’s funny I did not find in any of these verses the idea of praying in tongues/gibberish.
Well, of course not! The tongues of angels are not “gibberish”. When people pray in the Spirit, their mind is unfruitful. It is the Spirit praying through us. Prayer that originates in God is surely not gibberish!
Code:
The verse that says *praying in the spirit*, where is tongues here? It just says praying in the spirit and that is all. The verse in 1 cor. 14 is refering to a known language. When the wrod tongue is used it means a known language.
There are many ways of praying and singing in the Spirit. The use of tongues is only one.

I know you believe that all tongues are languages known to man. I think you need to believe that, in order to invalidate this gift in the Church today. 🤷

However, scripture is clear that a person praying in tongues speaks mysteries to God.
One must ask first of all what is the pupose for tongues?
Really? Is that what you see the Apostles doing on Pentecost?
Answers must be based on what the Bible says and not on experiece.
Really? where do you read THAT in your Bible?

Has it ever occurred to you that what is written in your Bible IS experience?
We all know that people claim to be able to speak in tongues but what they do does not fit with the Bible.
Yes. And we know people like yourself, who wish for some reason to discount what the Bible says because of these abuses.
Biblical tongues like the gifts of mirsacles and healing are are to by used for the service of others and not for indiviual private usage.
Actually, the scripture does not say that. Scripture says that they are for the building up of the Church. Now, we are the Body of Christ, and individually members of it. The gifts build us up individually and corporately.
Tongues is not not gibberish but known languages.
Indeed, but they may not be known to humans. 😃
Tongues are sign gifts like mircales and healing given to the apostles, and to those whom they acknowledge, to authenticate their message.
This is what someone taught you, so that they could discount their presence today. 🤷
They are NOT a private prayer language.
Clearly not for for those who do not wish to have it!
Amen.
NASU
You seem to be assuming that one cannot speak the uterances of God for His glory if they are alone with Him. 🤷

You are correct. Tongues that are around today are just gibberish. They are not the tongues as found in the Bible. Biblical tongues are known languages of the time.
You must be referring to the quotation from Isaiah which is in the middle of 1Corinthians 14.

Quanophore,
It is very interesting that your reply did not have one refernce from the Bible to support you ideas?

You mentioned where is the refernce for not going on experiences as our guide,
I said this *Answers must be based on what the Bible says and not on experiece. *
You said this
*Really? where do you read THAT in your Bible?

Has it ever occurred to you that what is written in your Bible IS experience?*

Here is where the Bible says that the Word of God and not experience is our guide to truth.

2 Peter 1:16-21

For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased” — 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
NASU

Even the Word of God comes before an experience like the transfiguration.

granny…you are right…very interesting and way over my head!! But the charismatic reneweal actually deserves the respect but it is almost like your own church family is not, i guess you would say “supporting” but tearing you down spiritually…is this a fair statement to make or assume?? My inlaws attend a charismatic movement with the catholic church like one a month or something like that. She tells me that if they brought it into regular mass the people would flip out. I kind of feel bad because they have to search out these groups and attend to get the fullness of what they want but yet still be catholic. And only get that every so often. I just couldn’t deal with that and only worshipping god the way i feel led once a month . Thank god i am pentecostal. To me it sounds like having something approved but having to fight then about it being this and being that. Anyway, hope it all comes together for your group.
My apology for taking so long to respond to your question: “Is this a fair statement to make or assume??” Since that question can be answered no, yes, maybe, I’ll give you some background and you can decide. It should not be surprising that squabbles, contrary personalities, and misunderstandings exist in the Catholic Church. Look at the first Apostles. There were the sons of thunder, foot-in-the-mouth Peter and doubting Thomas. It had to be the Holy Spirit Who held together this motley crew of cowards, hiding in the upper room. Thinking about the amazing powers which the Holy Spirit showered on the people in that upper room on Pentecost gives me goose bumps.

Without going into Church history, it is obvious that squabbles became serious disagreements and divisions as to the meaning of God’s Revelation. As far as the Catholic Church, the major interpretations of Revelation have been settled. This includes the Seven Sacraments and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which are the means that can be used to bring us to eternal bliss with God.

In addition, there are a variety of ways in which one can live one’s life. One can be a great preacher or a worker in a soup kitchen. There are various methods of prayer or forms of spirituality. St. Francis is a wonderful example of one form of spirituality; yet, not all of us are called to his form. Since St. Paul, there have been a number of great saints who have practiced and preached other forms of spirituality. There are a lot of characters and opposing personalities, as well as a fair share of mudgies in Catholicism so as far as individuals, one size of spirituality does not fit all.

What does unite all–brings us together–is the belief in the Real Presence of Jesus, Our Savior, in the Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament.

Historically speaking, some people would offer that in the 1900’s, Christianity as a whole was in a period similar to the challenges of the Apostolic Church. There was a need for a “new” Pentecost. And historically, the Holy Spirit did come in a special way to renew Christianity, showering upon us His gifts. The Holy Spirit has not left.

There are lots of reasons why people embrace the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and there are an equal amount of reasons why people do not. You are right that it sounds like having something approved but then having to fight about it being this and being that. What can I tell you? Despite all, the Charismatic Renewal’s benefits to Christianity are many – but that is a topic for another thread.

In a real way, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, including the renewal of praying in prayer tongues, has touched the Catholic Mass and the Church as a whole. Most of the time, people interested in the gifts of the Holy Spirit go to a series of classes intended to deepen one’s personal faith. They are also encouraged to serve the Church. As a result, there are many “charismatics” who don’t belong to any formal group but who are extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, lectors at Holy Mass, serving on parish commissions, etc. and being responsible citizens in their community. And there are many, many people who continue to praise God in prayer tongues.

Blessings,
granny

All human life is meant for eternal life with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I’m Roman Catholic and I don’t believe in the charismatic movement. It’s absurd in my understanding of what the Holy Spirit would do. I don’t condone having separate masses for one (nor would I want to have that ever in my regular mass), nor do I condone shrieking, barking, pinking, raising my hands all over the place or rolling on the floor…
Just another fluke from the Protestant movement trying to barge it’s way in. I also really don’t think the Holy Spirit would think “awesome time to have a “revival” it’s the 1960’s!”
I’ve also prayed long and hard to the Holy Spirit and I truly don’t feel that its present in this movement.

This is one of my favorite prayers to the Holy Spirit.

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.

Easter blessings,
granny

Really? Well, your entitled to your opinion. If I saw what you describe I wouldn’t want to be a part of that either (shrieking, barking, pinking, raising hands and rolling on the floor…oh my!) The truth is, I’ve been a part of the “charismatic movement” for many years and although there are some things that I’m not comfortable with, I have rarely seen what you are describing. Quite the opposite. Beautiful worship of our Lord! I’m sorry you haven’t been able to see that side:(
