Your posts have given some good information. Thank you.1 Cor 14:2-3
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
The reason this variety of tongues should not be used in the public service is because it cannot be understood by others, and if it is not interpreted, is not useful to the others.
1 Cor 14:4-5
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
Private prayer in tongues builds up the individual in the Spirit.
Eph 6:18
18 Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
Rom 8:26-27
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 27 And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
The private prayer use of the gift of tongues is yielding to the Spirit, and allowing the Spirit to pray through one, disengaging the mind.
1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful…
I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
Here’s a question from my own experience.
When I pray to God, I give Him glory and praise. I petition Him for my needs. I tell Him I am sorry for my sins. I thank Him for all He has done for me and for others. These kinds of prayers are also prayed out loud during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
It is my understanding that the Holy Spirit uses my voice box, tongue, and speech muscles to form new sounds and new words which are also the same type of prayers as above. The term for these new sounds is prayer tongues, the common gift of the Holy Spirit. It is not the higher gift of tongues which needs to be interpreted in order to instruct others - to build up the church.
Considering that Jesus said "Where two or more are gathered…
Can my friends and I meet together and pray out loud using our prayer tongues?
