"This is my Body. This is my Blood…"So when are you becoming Catholic?
I have friends and family who belong to the CC. To this day, whenever the bible is discussed, instead of opening up the bible and showing me what they believe, they will either refuse to discuss it or they tell we to go talk to their priest.

So becoming catholic will not happen.

Yet, becoming part of the bride of Christ, I have been for quite some time.

I’m sure there are people here who will open their bible to answer questions.😃

As a start, I believe with all my heart in John, Chapter 6. I also believe in the Holy Spirit and am grateful for His gifts to all of us, you included. 👍

Now this is what it is all about. I don’t think you will find one place where I referred to a catholic as not a christian.

It is God who knows what is in the hearts of men.

It is love that is the cornerstone of the faith, for Christ is love. How great a love must he had when having the power with a word to unravel all of creation, but instead allowed men to humiliate him, spit on him, beat him beyond recognition, whip him, mock him, nail him to a cross between two thieves and gamble for his garments.

Yet, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Good reply. Is the Catholic Charismatic Renewal - At the Heart of the Church a link? I couldn’t get it to work.

It was, when I used it; it was working fine then; I made sure, because it was on a page with some dead links  It had links to some good things, too. Sorry it didn’t work 😦 Shall I repost 🙂 ?

Post 237 had this link which worked for me try this one It took me to Part II. Is that the whole thing?

I have a document printed in pamphlet form from “The Heart of the Church Consultation”, May 6-11, 1990 in Techny, Illinois. It is based on the the following book:

by Kilian McDonnell, O.S.B. and George Montague, S.M.

Kilian McDonnell, O.S.B. and George Montague, S.M. are also editors of a document based on “The Heart of the Church Consultation” held May 6 -11, 1990 in Techny,

Most Reverend Sam G. Jacobs has a letter of encouragement in the beginning of this pamphlet.

Note: My computer gets grumpy so that may be the reason I couldn’t open the first link.

Thanks you so much.

I believe that when the way baptisms were administered in the church was changed from how the apostles had established it through the unction of the Holy Spirit, it brought about a time of great turmoil in the faith. The effect of changing what the Word of God said into the interpretation of men created a church that had a form of godliness, but denied the power of the Holy Spirit.

That is easy to assert - but how will you support it ? And where is it said that the mode of baptism cannot, ever, be altered ? Are the bed-ridden to be denied baptism ? Surely, that would mean prizing the outward form of the sacrament more than the end for which it has been given.

More generally - is the Church to change nothing in any way ? But: the Christianity of Acts was not absolutely identical with the community that formed during the ministry of Jesus. Unsurprisingly - because a Gospel preached to Gentiles can’t take for granted that Gentiles in Greece will think exactly like Jews in Palestine. The gospels often speak of “the Son of Man” - Acts does not; that title would have meant nothing to converts from paganism who know nothing of Jewish ideas or of Daniel 7 or of 1 Enoch. And what is good of a Gospel that conveys no meaning ? The preaching of the Gospel has to be adapted, so as to remain the Gospel. And similar adaptations took place over the years, in other respects too, to enable the Church to be effective in a changing world; what is the good of following the letter of the Bible, if this means that the Church cannot adapt to its circumstances when it needs to ?
This is what the bible refers to as the falling away. This falling away has been happening for hundreds of years.

Not all forms & ways of godliness attract the same people:

  • not everyone is attracted to the Rosary
  • not everyone is attracted to “Charismatic” ways of prayer
  • or to the same Saints
  • nor is everyone devoted to the Blessed Sacrament
  • nor is everyone attracted to the Brown Scapular
  • but all of these are forms & ways of godliness, all are alike in being good & helpful to somebody or other; so there is something in the Church for everyone. None are wrong, none will appeal to everyone; so the liberty each of us has in praying as he or she is moved, needs to be accompanied with courtesy to those who find helpful something we might not.
Can you find a doctrine, in the Bible, that people must pray in “Charismatic” ways ? I can’t. Records of the giving of Charismatic gifts - & there are many such records in the Bible - are not commands to pray like that. What is **essential **is not speaking in tongues, but something far more important: love. The Christian who loves God & neighbour is as charismatic as any Charismatic. Tongues are good - but they are as nothing compared to faith ad hope, and above all, love: because love is the one gift that will never pass away.

How is any of that a denial of the power of the Holy Spirit, & not, instead, a clear acknowledgement of it & of Him ?

You don’t have to be THAT kind of Catholic! Be the Catholic you WANT them to be! Steeped in scripture, and able to discuss your faith intelligently. 👍
For not being doctrine, it sure says allot about it in the bible, which is doctrine.
No, there is actually nothing in scripture about the modern “charismatic movement” in the Catholic Church. What is written there for our instruction about the gifts and working of the Holy Spirit. This predated what is happening in the United States now by centuries. There is nothing in there, either, about the Modern American Fundamentalis Movement, which started in the 1930’s. These are “movements” and not “doctrines”. What he said was that he did not appreciate the “movement” (modern manifestations of abuses of the gifts, by his definition). Some of us disagree with his defnition, but we all agree that abuses are not right, or biblical.
I believe that when the way baptisms were administered in the church was changed from how the apostles had established it through the unction of the Holy Spirit, it brought about a time of great turmoil in the faith.
Jesus gave the Church authority to govern the sacraments. If the successors changed the way the Apostles did things, it was because they were led to do so by the Holy Spirit.

Are you saying that changing the method of baptism brought about a time of great turmoil in the faith? If that is what you are saying, please explain what you mean.
The effect of changing what the Word of God said into the interpretation of men created a church that had a form of godliness, but denied the power of the Holy Spirit.
I agree with the principle that you are forwarding here, that substituting the Word of God for the interpretation of men always blocks the power of the HS.

What we will disagree upon is what constitutes the Word of God. The Apostles taught that their preaching and teaching was the Word of God. They passed this on to their successors. The Church followed this Word of God along with the Holy Writings until the Bible was formed four centuries later. The Word of God present in the Church did not 'cease" when it was canonized by those Jesus placed in authority.
This is what the bible refers to as the falling away. This falling away has been happening for hundreds of years. Even in the days of the apostles, men were taking and twisting the gospel of Jesus Christ into their own gospels.
Well, this is true, of course, there have always been, and always will be apostates. This is why Jesus had to promise His Church that He would lead them into all Truth. The only way they could avoid passing through the gates of hell was by the power of God.
What has this falling away done or what is it’s result?

This is the way I look at Catholicism. It gave us the original Bible and it continues to give us the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Seven Sacraments. It’s like having the whole pie.👍

Here are links to a site that describes the baptism of the Holy Spirit in detail.

godsaidmansaid.com/topic3.asp?Cat2=244&ItemID=970 Part 1
I will start with this one. One of the errors I found on this page is:

(1.) Can we agree that, on the grounds of age, scholarship, geography, and weight of extant (existing) documents that the Authorized King James Version is the unquestioned authority? They answered “Yes.” (2.) Will you agree that no doctrine will be presented for consideration unless it can be fully supported in the Bible with chapter and verse? They answered “Yes.” One brother from our camp correctly deduced that all books except for the Bible had been eliminated.
The KJV does not have the primacy in age, scholarship, and weight of existing documents. It is a deficient translation for many reasons, one being that some of the books used by Jesus and the Apostles were removed.

Secondly, it is not appropriate to attempt to derive doctrine by “chapter and verse”… the complete doctrine was delivered whole and entire by Jesus to His Church. It was the Church that produced the scripture. The two are not to be separated from one another when understanding the gospel.

Thirdly, it is not productive to “eliminate all books except for the Bible”. Part of how we understand what the early church believed and practiced is by looking at these writings of the early church fathers. Eliminating these is counterproductive. Perhaps you find this necessary to support your claim of apostasy? How soon did it happen?

This next is from part II:

This necessary doctrine cannot be exaggerated. Receiving the Baptism with the Holy Ghost is the very first commandment given to the church. The ministry of the Holy Ghost and being personally baptized with the Holy Ghost are foundational to all the responsibilities of the Body of Christ. The Jewish feast of Pentecost, also known as the Feast of Weeks of Harvest, or of First Fruits, was a feast day similar to the American Thanksgiving. It was held the 50th day after Passover and it was the very day that God, through Christ Jesus, baptized the initial followers – the First Fruits – of Jesus Christ with the Holy Ghost. Pentecost is commonly known as the birthday of the church. The commandment to receive the baptism with the Holy Ghost is the last word spoken by the Lord and the first commandment given to the beginning church. Acts 1:6-9:

Except for the writer mispeaking himself by the use of the word “exaggerated” when he seems to mean “omitted”, this all is very consistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church.

The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is separate from the gift of salvation. It is certainly preferable to receive it the day one is born-again, but in numerous instances it is received at a future date. Even if one receives it on the day of his salvation, it is a distinctly different and separate experience.

The initial outpouring of the Holy Ghost took place in an upper room in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. Those who were filled with the Holy Ghost were already believers in Christ, and had been previously baptized with water. Acts 2:1-4:

This is a misapplication of the word “salvation”. There is no separation between the Baptism in the HS and salvation. In fact, it salvation is not possible if they are separated. This formulation erroneously equates personal experience with spiritual reality. According to Apostolic Teaching, people are sealed by the promised Holy Spirit when they are baptized. They may not realize all the gifts and power they received at that time until later, but their personal experience does not alter the spritual reality.

From the day of Pentecost, the giving of the HS was never separated from water baptism until the Modern American Fundamentalist movement, beginning in 1930.

Acts 19:1-6 shows the Baptism with the Holy Ghost as distinctly separate from salvation. Also note that it declares three separate baptisms. It reads,

For Christians, this is not the case. Christians no longer have the “baptism of John”. Christ’s baptism, infused with the HS, fulfilled the baptism of repentance preached by John. The Apostles understood that the giving of the HS was not to be separated from water baptism.

The Apostles taught that there was ONE BAPTISM.

The word of God certainly settles this issue. Baptism with the Holy Ghost is a separate and distinct supernatural occurrence that follows the born-again experience.

Actually, what we have here is a human interpretation of the Word of God. I am sure it settles the issue for all who espouse this perspective, but it is not consistent with what the apostles believed, practiced, and taught.

Furthermore, the phrase “born again experience” begs definition. I maintain that this is an invention of the Modern American Fundamentalist movement, and is foreign to the Apostolic Teaching. The Apostles understood that the HS was at work in the baptismal waters.

As to the rest of this section, it is an error to assume that tongues is a requirement to demonstrate that a person has received a valid baptism. However, the point is well made that speaking in unknown tongues is one of the manifestations that the HS has fallen upon a person.

They are probably devout but poorly catechised.Proof texting one’s faith is desirable but not entirely necessary as long as one looks to the Catholic Church for one’s direction as it SOLELY is the “Pillar and Foundation of Truth”,SOLELY protected by the Paraclete as promised by Christ who also said,“Unless you come to me as little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven”.

Please send your poorly catechised kin here for instruction. It would be a corporal Act of Mercy. For you to judge the Catholic Church based upon the lack of knowledge of some of its adherents would be silly. It would be no different than my judging you and your Church/Faith based on some of the few anti-Catholic Protestants who attack our Faith on these Fora.

That is easy to assert - but how will you support it ? And where is it said that the mode of baptism cannot, ever, be altered ? Are the bed-ridden to be denied baptism ? Surely, that would mean prizing the outward form of the sacrament more than the end for which it has been given.

Is not God the authority of how or what order is in the church? Does the CC authority supercede that of the apostles? Certainly not.

God gave us the cornerstone on which to build upon. The baptisms are part of that stone which is Christ.

When a man is born again, saved from the hold death had on him because of sin, he is baptized into the church, not through water, but through the blood of Jesus, baptized into Christ by faith. The man believes and Christ baptizes him with his blood.

The Holy Spirit of God cannot enter a man unless the man is made clean, made holy. Romans 6 explains in great detail about salvation.

And when a man has been born again, he is to receive the baptism of water and the Holy Spirit, that is if God did not baptize the man in the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation which occured at various times in the NT.

The water baptism was given in the name of Jesus. I don’t recognize the CC authority to change this. It is written we are not to add or take away frrom the Word of God.

Then there is the baptism of the Holy Spirit which was administered by the apostles to most believers by the laying on of hands.

Yet, though it all, there is only one baptism that saves a man. Eph. 4:5

There is no place in scripture that says if a man does not receive the water and Holy Spirit baptism he loses his salvation. Yet, why would a man neglect receiving them since it is commanded by the Lord to do so.

The CC changed how the baptisms were to be administered and it was that time the Holy Spirit was quenched in the church. It brought about a church that had a form of godliness, but denied the power of the Holy Spirit. That is why healings, tongues, the gifts of the spirit stopped happening in the church.

God himself set the precidence of how the baptisms were to be preformed in the church. The authority who changed it from how it was written did so, making it contrary to the Word of God.

And there is a **huge difference **between the gift of speaking in tongues and the common gift of praying in tongues, also called prayer tongues.
Just want to interject here. This is very important distinction and I thought it would clear much misunderstanding on the subject of this thread if this is to be accepted or understood first.

God bless and have a blessed Holy Week.

Yes, Jesus is the Head of the Church. The authority of the CC IS the Authority of the Apostles. It was to their successors that they passed on the authority given them by Christ.

God gave us the cornerstone on which to build upon. The baptisms are part of that stone which is Christ.
Yes, but it is not for us to build. He is the one who builds it. When men get involved, and start building on the cornerstone, they quickly get off the foundation, and build unsupportable side wings that lead to confusion.

Yes. You have been erroneously taught that water baptism is somehow separated. This is a modern man made invention.

It seems that there is quite a bit of Apostolic Teaching that you do not recognize. Itis a testimony at how far away from what the Apostles taught the modern American Churches have drifted when they separated from the Apostolic Succession.

At least we agree on something! 👍 The Apostles never separated water baptism from the baptism of the HS.

I expect you need to believe this fiction so that you can support your rebellion against the Church founded by Christ. It is a good thing it is not true, because if it were, there would be no NT from which you base your erroneous accusation.

The truth is that they have never stopped. They have continued from that day, until this. The teaching of the Church that they are alive and active has never ceased, either.
God himself set the precidence of how the baptisms were to be preformed in the church. The authority who changed it from how it was written did so, making it contrary to the Word of God.
Jesus gave His authority to His apostles, and they to their successors. They do not do anything that is contrary to the scriptures. If it seems to you that they contradict, it is because you don’t understand one, the other, or both. From reading your posts, I surmise it is the latter.

On the day of Pentecost, the apostles were together in prayer. This could be called church. So when in church, if a man prays in an unknown tongue, it must be followed by interpretation. Yet, if a man is speaking in foreign tongues, those of that language hear the words and have no need of an interpretor.

There is stated in the bible what is called in unknown tougues. It is referred to by Paul as praying with tongues of angels.

When a man prays in the Holy Spirit in his personal prayer life, his understanding is unfruitful. He is praying in faith through the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit can see the problems the man will be facing and makes intercession for the man unto our Heavenly Father. Now, the personal prayer tongue is not to be mistaken for the gift of tongues for the edification of the church. The personal prayer tongue is for the edification of the prayer.

I posted links that will help you have a clear understanding of speaking in tongues.

Thanks to all the Scripture references I have had to look up, I have now found four separate meanings for the use of the word “tongues.” This thread is generally referring to the Charismatic Renewal which includes the following gifts of the Holy Spirit,—the common gift of praying in tongues, also called prayer tongues and a very special and rare gift that of speaking in tongues, that is, bringing the word of God to the Church.
