**Specter of election day violence looms as Trump spurs vigilante poll watchers
Advocates say US faces ‘midnight hour of our democracy’ as militia members and neo-Nazi groups take Donald Trump’s claims of ballot rigging seriously**
Donald Trump’s claims of “large-scale” voter fraud have prompted officials across the political spectrum to warn about the dangers of vigilante poll monitors amid fears of confrontations or even violence on US election day.
As opinion polls tightened this week between Trump and Hillary Clinton ahead of Tuesday’s presidential vote, there are concerns of chaos following his claims, without serious evidence, that the election could be “rigged” and his refusal to say if he will accept the outcome.
The Democratic party has launched a series of legal challenges around the country alleging voter intimidation, and on Friday in the battleground state of Ohio a judge issued a temporary restraining order against Trump’s campaign and his unofficial adviser Roger Stone. The ruling said anyone who engaged in intimidation or harassment inside or near Ohio polling places would face contempt of court charges.
Republican leaders in some battleground states are reporting a surge of volunteers signing up to serve as official poll watchers, and in an unprecedented move, the Trump campaign itself has since August been requesting that volunteers sign up as “election observers” to “Help Me Stop Crooked Hillary From Rigging This Election!”. Stone, meanwhile, has said he has helped recruit people to do “exit polls” to tackle voter fraud and denies .
The nation’s most prominent anti-government militia and a neo-Nazi group have also announced plans to send their members to monitor for voter fraud outside the polls.
Former US attorney general Alberto Gonzales, a Republican who served under the administration of George W Bush and took a noted hardline on election fraud allegations, expressed caution. He told the Guardian: “I wouldn’t be a big fan of those kind of private efforts, quite honestly. I would depend on the state and local officials to make sure of the integrity of the vote within particular precincts.
“The danger, of course, is that if you have a very heavy-handed presence that may in fact intimidate certain people based upon their age and their education.”

There is a long history of official election observers in this country. Generally this means one or more representatives of each major party. Election observers get formal training on what their role is and what it is not. It has worked well.

The problem comes when untrained “vigilantes” take it into their heads to do election observing and assign themselves whatever role they think is appropriate. In my state there are strict rules against any unofficial poll watching. You vote. You go home. That’s it. No questioning people in line. No show of force. It is strictly enforced. I hope such enforcement will not be needed this time.

I am curious as to what such a person would think is appropriate. Voting in my region is fairly uneventful; I hand them my I’d, they hand me an electronic voting card, I make my votes on a machine, I go home.

Never mind the so called trump vigilantes. There’s also going to be observers from other countries, and why are they allowed in a US election? Not sure but I think some may be Brits, and could be from the UN. I saw one woman interviewed the other day who was “concerned” about our election, and presumably was afraid of Trump.

Yes there’s always been voter fraud… But some of us (Utah) are voting by mail. There could be fraud in that also, but think it would be more difficult in this state anyway.

Some of our large cities such as Chicago has always had this particularly in local elections, when Mayor Daly was elected. Can’t remember much outcries then!

False and hysterical this headline as it has been the Democrats and Clinton that have lusted after violence throughout this election cycle.

Will Trump be calling for peace and calm in his concession speech?

I can hardly imagine Trump giving a concession speech if he loses, much less a “(call) for peace and calm.”

There are bound to be a few lunatics among supporters of both candidates, who resort to violence. However, the vast majority do not fit into this category. Still, the safety and well-being of both candidates, as well as that of the people, after the election should be of concern to all Americans.

No one ever said the end of the world would be pretty.
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
Winston Churchill
Probably still true.

Well, I voted early today because I will be out of town on Tuesday. The Board of Elections office where I voted was jammed packed with people standing in long lines to vote, and there were quite a few people with the usual political signs, etc. I did not hear one incidence of arguing or violence, etc. All was peaceful and people were very polite.

I don’t think there will be general violence, but there may be a few scattered crazies out there.

Will Trump be calling for peace and calm in his concession speech?
He won’t need to. All the potential rioters are not voting for him. Most Republicans will have to go to work on Wednesday and won’t have time for “street theatre”

👍 Funny how that works.

All the rioters were paid by Clinton operatives this cycle, first to disrupt Sanders rallies, then Trump rallies. Why would they riot if she wins? 🤷

exactly.

I’m on record as believing Trump won’t be allowed to win. But if he does, watch out for BLM and other HRC supporting groups to hit the streets in every major city. That is the rumor at this point, but I think it’s no coincidence that we’ve seen nothing of them in the last few months as their masters realized that every time they made an appearance that resulted in violence that helped Trump and hurt HRC. So they’re quiet. For now.

There could be violence tonight ! Donald Trump is holding a rally at 9:30 tonight at the National Western Complex in Denver. The surrounding neighborhood which is called Elyria Swansea was 83 pct Hispanic in 2007.

It’s time for all true Americans to do their duty - get out and vote, then spend the next 4 years grumbling about who won…

There might be violence, but it is a proven fact that the Democrats are the party who has done the violence. I believe that they are known for years for this type of behavior.

Of course there might be an individual conservative who also becomes more aggressive and does what one might feel is violent, but this is rare.

If he should win, Hillary will call for a recount and play victim as she always has. Take a look on You Tube on the violence at the Dem convention as wel as burning and looting of cities that year. This year is peaceful compared to that one.
