We should all ignore the fear peddlers regarding 2012. They are making money selling this stuff. Remember Y2K? No? Thats because *nothing *happened!

Hey, here’s a thought. Maybe the Mayans just ran out of room on that circular thingy. It could happen! Then someone interprets the out of room on the circular thingy as THE END.

The key here is to recognize that the fear is coming from Satan, alone. Do not study these theories too much and do not fall victim to their “scientific” justifications… that is Satan’s trap. Don’t forget that science is how we (as a society) have reasoned that the earth’s population needs to be reduced and that a baby’s breath is a toxic chemical!

Lets not get to extreme here;)

Let us not forget that although science has given us a lot of questionable technology and theories, it is first and foremost a study of the world around us, the world God created. If you study the astronomy, biology, physics or geology you are in essence studying God Himself and the way in which He works. And yes even the Vatican participates in these studies.

This is an easy one for me. I believe in the Bible.

Matt 24:36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven nor the Son, but the Father alone.

The Mayans predicted change not doomsday. Sensationalistic media is the culprit. 😃

Happy 2012 everone but just in case I will be sure not to slack at the confessional. :whacky:

You must have missed my post (#7) 😛

Wow, I asked and boy did I ever receive!

Some great answers in this thread. Thanks!

When someone asks you what you think about the Mayan prophesy, you can say, “Well, maybe the world will end in 2012. It is more likely that you and I will be dead tomorrow. The question is: Is your soul ready for either one?”

I don’t know what Heaven revealed to the Mayans before they ever heard the Gospel. As nearly as I can tell, the Mayans predicted some change that made it irrelevant to extend a particular calendar, not the end of the world.

I know what Heaven revealed to us, and that is to always be ready, because you don’t know the day or the hour.

What scientists know about science is that they’re doing their best to explain the facts they know in the most logical, straight-forward fashion they can. Scientists are pretty good at predicting a lot of things, but nature is always giving them surprises. That is what makes science so fun!! People may go into science to have certainty, but the best ones stay in science because they don’t get certainty. They get a kick out of re-writing the text books.

It is prudent to listen to the information the scientists have gathered and what they think it means. That’s how people know to get the plywood over their windows before a hurricane.

It isn’t necessary to get hysterical, as if we thought nothing bad could ever happen in this vale of tears. We know from history that bad things can and do happen, inside the Church and out, in human nature and in nature in general. Our work is to remain faithful through it all. Part of that is daring to be serene in our trust in God.

Listen, too, to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas, including the sons and daughters of the Aztecs and the Mayans:

*My little son. Do not be distressed and afraid.
Am I not here who am your Mother?
Are you not under my shadow and protection?
Am I not the fountain of your joy?
Are you not in the fold of my mantle, in the cradle of my arms? *

It will be the end of the world for maybe a hundred milion people who will die in 2012, we just do not know when our name will be called.

Blessings

Eric

These things come around every few years or so. I believe, they’re mainly the result of a lack of God in people’s lives (if they don’t believe in Him, then they’re going to believe in something). Sometimes these theories have scientific backing (Y2K, or the theories on climate change) and sometimes they are purely prophetic (like this 2012 thing, or back last April when the world was also supposed to end).

To add to that, Jesus promised to never leave us.

And with regard to fear, it’s good to remember that one of JP II’s favorite statements was, “Fear not!” Given the times HE lived in, that is beyond inspirational! 🙂

I saw a cartoon about that the other day. Bizarro, I think, where one Mayan is holding a calendar and says, “I only had enough room to go up to 2012.” Another Mayan responds, “Ha! That’ll freak somebody out someday.”

At any rate, I heard the Mayans (what’s left of them) aren’t worried, so that’s good enough for me (at far as the Mayan thing is concerned.) 🙂

The truth is we may not know the day or the hour ,but we will know the season and like the bridesmaids should be on watch so as to be prepared…

I agree, but I heard that it took quite a lot of programming fixes to make Y2k a non event.

I think the one good thing that resulted from the Y2k scenario was that many people thought seriously about what emergency supplies they had on hand and – perhaps for the first time – got serious about following the usual advice from the Red Cross, etc. (Doesn’t hurt to have the right stuff to be able to keep one’s family functioning in a power outage, for example. And to be able to tell your kids that. ) 🙂

I have become rather fond of:

Luke 21:26-28
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)
Men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of heaven shall be moved; And then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with great power and majesty. But when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.

We live, this day, in a state of needing redemption. Our life on this earth, and the earth itself, even for as long as it has existed, is temporary. Our relationship with God is permanent, and He calls us, perhaps today, to be where He is. I notice the sky a lot more than I used to. And, as Peter learned in walking on the water, let us not take our eyes off of the Lord.

All of the prognosticators are placed among us only to remind us that God alone is in charge.

Exactly. We ought not get hysterical about the possibility of disasters, but rather make prudent plans in the knowledge that something will probably happen at some point. All of history is full of nasty things happening. We shouldn’t become complacent that it can’t be us, or that we will not be asked to help someone who is caught as a victim. Even being able to be self-sufficient for a few days could greatly reduce the burden on those trying to supply help for everyone who needs it. The more people who are prepared for a disaster, the better it will go for those who weren’t.

I have a feeling that we’re going to be hearing quite a lot about the convergence of “Doomsday Prophecies” over the next few months (Mayans, I-Ching, Web Bot Project, etc.) that predict major disaster(s) sometime in 2012.

As fellow Catholics, what, in your opinion, do we need to do to “armor up” our minds and spirits so we don’t drift into negative thinking when we’re confronted by this kind of news?
Even though I won’t propagate (most of) it…I welcome it. I hope it will wake up some of these people who walk around not living as Christ and the Church has taught us to live. I’m sure some of it will get people talking which opens the door for me to talk to them about the true prophecies that were given to us by God. These are people that I wouldn’t normally have that initial window of opportunity to talk religion to.

While a lot of these predictions are without merit I wouldn’t dismiss our place in history. Look to what Our Lady warned us about at Fatima…

“…we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!’.”

Happy and Blessed New Year!

Personally, I’d be as sure as I can that I’m in a state of grace – at any time. Also there is scripture which has been quoted that no one can know except the Father.
Then I’d rent the movie “2012” (which I must have seen 7 times already) 🍿 and think about having a Christmas party December 22, 2012, which is the day after it’s all supposed to blow up or whatever. 😃

Good observation. I was just thinking a bit ago that we are here – after all – to help each other out. With that in mind, anytime is a good time to make sure we have our emergency supplies in place–not just when disaster talk is in the air. 🙂

Hi all!

First off, Happy New Year to you all and wishing you many blessings in 2012!

In short, how best to stay positive about the future so we can reassure our families (especially children who will likely hear about these things)?

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut! 🙂
A heavy dose of critical thinking!

Respectfully, there’s not enough of that to go around between Catholics. I wish there were…

No need to fear these silly prophecies!
