We can have a discussion about how much influence there should be from religious to secular and back. It would be a good discussion. I have asked four times on threads with heavy traffic why people feel that there should be little to no influence betwen religious and secular parishes and quite frankly, you were the only who even attempted an answer. It would make a good thread if you would care to start.

I believe it essentially boils down to the fact that the parish life and religious life are extremely different animals and so it is disrespectful of both traditions to examine them together and from the same perspective, and it is also disrespectful of both traditions to use one’s traditions to qualify their use in the other. It is utterly pointless and devoid of thought, in my opinion, to attempt to force the an aspect of the religious life onto parish life or vice versa, even if only subtly, unless it is done for the reason that it is absolutely the best choice. If a decision has to be made in a parish, the plans of action must be in line with parish tradition unless they are all utter failures, and only then, IMO, should a religious tradition be introduced as a possibility. The same goes for decisions in religious communities; they should make decisions and do things based on their own traditions and experience.

Simply: respect the traditions of both by confining them to their appropriate places, either religious or parish.

Religious and parishes are different because, well, they’re just DIFFERENT! If there was no difference in substance then there would be no difference in the way of life. But there is, so there is.

To get back on topic, the reason I brought it up, was in response to a post which seemed to posit the idea that the SSPX way was the right way or that it was the only way. It’s clearly not the only way. We can discuss what is right for secular parishes vs. religious but I warn you that if SSPX becomes a prelature, I’ll use your argument against you that thier 550 year old traditions may not be “acceptable and prudent” in ordinary neighborhood parishes.

That argument won’t work because SSPX people and non-SSPX people are essentially the same: they are secular people who go to parishes. Therefore there is a legitimate discussion there, unlike in the religious vs. parish debate.
