St. Andrew's Catholic Parish will carry banner in Portland's Pride Parade

I live near a major Catholic University, no way do I believe I could poll the average student and come up with a majority in support of Gay marriage. Personal observation!

Those with epilepsy were subjected to the same treatment until relatively recently, and are still the object of ridicule in some circles (Ever heard the term “pitching a fit”?). Show me a single “epileptic pride” parade. There isn’t one? Maybe that’s because it was studied for what it is - a disorder - and proper treatments were developed. This is about not just acceptance, but celebration of, a behavior. This is about shouting from the rooftops that they are happy to make what they like to do with their genitals the center of their identity to the point where they see even the most gentle reminder of the Church’s teaching as hate speech, because they see it as opposing their whole identity as a person. Am I maybe projecting here? Possibly. If so, tell me where I’m wrong. Explain to me how men strutting down the streets in corsets, stockings, and briefs is a celebration of them as whole persons - not just their penises.
👍👍 No matter how much you try to dress this up as “enlightenment” “acceptance of differences” the reality is that it’s a celebration focused on a sexual proclivity. As noted before, if someone were to suggest other “pride” parades focused on sexual inclinations it would be called absurd. Yet there is no other reason for “pride” being celebrated other than to make public your private sexual notions.

To your last comment, I was in San Francisco on business and sitting at an outdoor cafe when that city’s Gay Pride went by. Let’s just say some of the outfits (or lack thereof) were quite disturbing. Although I wasn’t Catholic at the time, the parodies on priests and religious were certainly unkind. It made what happens in Portland look pretty tame by comparison.

As to an appropriate action by the Church, I’ve seen this group in action:

streetevangelization.com/

They set up a sign that says “Catholic Truth” and invite people to find out more, offer to pray, give out rosaries and extend a hand. I think something like this would be far more appropriate than appearing to support “gay pride” by marching and carrying a banner. The Church’s actual teaching on Same Sex Attraction is both charitable and consistent. Unfortunately as you said, unless you are willing to forget about the Church’s teaching and accept any and all behavior, no questions asked, you are deemed a “hater.”

It’s what people do when they have no congent argument. Thanks for the great post.

So I just brought this up to a gay pal of mine over IM.

His words:

“the pride parade is a show of support for gay people and for equal rights it doesnt make sense for them to participate and show that support but then say they don’t recognize those rights it seems like a mismatch somewhere”

I couldn’t agree more. I am all for evangelizing, but people want you to be REAL with them. Don’t blur the lines to ingratiate yourself first, that’ll only make you look schmoozy or even shady.

He asked them not to do this. I am saddened and disgusted. But this is Portland Oregon and let me tell you the Gay Lobby is VERY powerful here. There are many misguided souls who think that being Catholic means celebrating whatever people want to do even if against the Church. We have a lot of pro abortion “Catholics” too 😦

Lisa
I am so sorry to hear this about Portland, Oregon. Shameful to the extreme.

Nothing personal, but you identify yourself as an agnostic. So we don’t expect you to see it from a Christian point of view. And your posts consistently reaffirm that you either don’t know or don’t care to know what is taught by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals. The Magisterium isn’t important to you, but it’s important to us. Keep in mind that this is a Catholic website. You are also insulting people’s intelligence by denying what’s obvious in this parish situation.
Could not have said it any better.👍

It’s bad of course, but I don’t know why people are so surprised that individual Churches can go against Church teaching on moral matters when, for example, the Feeneyites of the Saint Benedict Center are able to go around spreading material heresy defying to Council of Trent by denying the Baptisms of Desire and Blood?
Since when is the Saint Benedict Center in communion with the Church?

Therein lies the difference.

I haven’t seen evidence that the parishioners are “promoting a homosexual lifestyle.” They go to this event, participate in the parade, and set up a booth to show that LGBT people are welcome to attend St. Andrews and to engage in community outreach. If Jesus could spend copious amounts of time among sinners in order to minister and not be “scandalized” by it then why can’t normal people?

I think that the true point of contention between the parish and the Archbishop is that they may believe that local parishioners, who have been doing this for 17 years, know what methods of ministering to LGBT people in their area work better than someone who just entered from stage left five months ago; even if he is an Archbishop.

I haven’t seen them make such a statement.
You aren’t a Catholic, you don’t go to that Church and you have identified yourself as Gay. When you post like this, all you do is reinforce how right Catholic teaching is with regard to homosexuality and why no sincere Catholic should participate in any Gay Pride March.

Its like a Catholic saying Planned Parenthood is good because they do Mammograms (they don’t actually the President of PP even said so).

It is not just Portland. Its the entire northwest- including Seattle.

Imagine much of this perspective migrated up from San Francisco. Portland hasn’t always been as out there as it is now. I think between the Californians come up here to escape (then) high property values and our economy changing from timber (conservative people and small towns) to more high tech in the big urban areas, the liberal agenda came with them. Archbishop Sample said he knew it was an area that didn’t have the same large Catholic presence as some states but as he said it’s the Year of Evangelation!

I think it was no accident that Archbishop Sample came to Portland and Archbishop Cordolione went to San Francisco. We need that kind of strength and orthodoxy to push back against the pressures of the overwhelming secularism.

I guess we will wait and see what happens as a result of St Andrews and the other parishes that participate in the march.

Yes, word on the street is that he was chosen for his strong and orthodox stance on matters of grave sin. I am just sorry that his early experience with some Portland’s Parishes was contentious rather than cooperative. I hope it is not discouraging.

Lisa
You are so very fortunate - I wish there were a 1,000 others just like him! Our area is not as bad as yours, yet the lingering influence of disobedience from an earlier era hangs over us like a pall.

Just pray for him - I’m more than certain he’s up for the job! 👍

Portland is a pretty perverted city anymore…

**Nude travelers gear up to take it all off this summer

During Portland, Oregon’s World Naked Bike Ride on June 8th, there will be special clothing-optional gallery hours at the Portland Art Museum which will be taking the wraps off a new exhibition about iconic bicycle design the same night.

The dates for the two events were planned independently, said museum spokesperson Beth Heinrich. But as long as over 4,000 naked people were going to be cycling right by the downtown museum’s front door it made sense to strip down admission fees and invite folks (naked or not) indoors to see the art.

Yep referred to this earlier. A couple of my friends were downtown last weekend and had not idea that the Naked Bike Ride was happening…part of the Rose Festival events I guess…

Oregon is an odd state and has long promoted the culture of death. Abortion was legal here before Roe. In fact it was a “Mecca” for those in adjoining states seeking abortions which were illegal in many places. Oregon was the first to legalize Euthanasia for people.

Archbishop Sample has a lot to do but he does seem to be up to the task. I wonder about the St Paul Street Evangalization group. They have a chapter that has come to Portland and said it was well received. Maybe too late for this year’s Pride Parade but for future events. It’s very quiet and does not accost people and slam them over the head with a Bible. It seems like a more orthodox approach to supporting those who deal with SSA than to appear to promote this behavior by marching in a parade.

I figured someone would trot out the “you aren’t Catholic” mantra eventually, but guess what. Catholics are failing miserably at ministering to LGBT people as the Church has acknowledged many times and the PEW survey confirms. If the Church wants insight into how to effectively minister to LGBT people then it should listen to LGBT people and come up with a better strategy. Participating in Pride events produces results, as the parishioners at St. Andrews have noted.

Source please.

See the OP:
I guess I would have to wonder whether those gays who chose to attend have been told what Church teaching is regarding gay sex. Or are they becoming Catholics who don’t agree with all teachings of the Church? If they are joining the Church and disagree with the teaching on homosexual acts, then perhaps they aren’t getting the results that the Church would like to get.

Activism too. We don’t know from the original article as to whether there are activists who force this on St. Andrews hence, the OP would not be conclusive. I was in church once, when one of those rainbow sashes were in it as well.

With all charity, lgbt people need to understand that sin is sin. No matter what name, moniker, or special class is attached to it. As long as lgbt groups demand acceptance of sin, there can be little agreement with The Church. We Pray for the Conversion of all sinners, ourselves included. But one cannot agree to accept as normal a sin which is completely opposed to the Natural Law established by God. If the Church suffers because of this, so be it. We are called to follow Christ, even unto death.

Perhaps the LGBT people should listen to the Catholic Church. As should all of us sinners.

We had a Priest who told us that when he worked back East, they would reject money from figures they thought involved in the Mafia, organized crime. See, there is a lesson in there. They saw, rightfully, the money made as ill-gotten.

These rejections pertain to many people and different classes. You wouldn’t want to see church attendees march in a Mafia parade because it might be a way to evangelize them.

I do see a bit how a Church could be considered a part of the community, thus might march in a parade, I said I see it, I don’t necessarily accept it and Portland seems pretty radical. I’m undecided.
