This entire discussion from someone telling an Anglican (with no offense of course) that he or she lives in a cesspool dump of filth and someone saying that as Sodom and Gomorrah we are asking to be destroyed and it will probably be by Isis… What!? and now this, that God did use pagans for punishment and the hope is that we are punished… is all just too mindboggling to me for me to say anything more. :hypno:
Don’t you know about that Anglican/ISIS conspiracy? 😛

God did use pagans to punish Israel…

I hope God does punish us: it means He cares enough about us to knock it in our heads and remind us that our actions can only lead to our doom. If He didn’t punish us, it could be taken as a sign that He was leaving us to burn in the Hell fire we are fueling 😦

I am stunned. I don’t know what to say about this. I think I will just exit this conversation, which was supposed to be about teachers being allowed to teach at Catholic schools.

Not so. The horrendous torture was carried out by the governments; I will give you that. The obsession with heresies, heretics and going after non-Catholics was pure Church-led. I’m not sure where you are getting the revisionist history, but it’s not accurate.
I’m sorry you don’t believe my opinion but it’s based on material that can be found on Catholic Answers. Please search the site for “Inquisition”. There’s a ton of material written from a historical perspective and quoting secular, not Church paid, historians. God bless your efforts to find the truth. 👍

I would rather rely on reputed historians in the academic arena. But thank you very much.

Punishment has always been consider medicative in Christian thought. The Cross is what healed the relationship between man and God…

My son, do not undervalue the correction which the Lord sends thee, do not be unmanned when he reproves thy faults. It is where he loves that he bestows correction; there is no recognition for any child of his, without chastisement. Be patient, then, while correction lasts; God is treating you as his children. Was there ever a son whom his father did not correct? No, correction is the common lot of all; you must be bastards, not true sons, if you are left without it (Hebrews 12:5-8).

San Francisco is a beautiful city. I lived there in my twenties in the 1970s. It was fun, but ultimately the gay scene drove me out. It was pretty disgusting.

I wish I could say something to help you but I’m still at a loss for words myself. 🤷

San Francisco is a beautiful (and alas, expensive) city, with kind and compassionate people. The world is represented in its residents. My church is in the city, and we are a welcoming, giving community. There is music in San Francisco. There is baseball. There is always room for one more person. I would not live anywhere else. God is truly in this place. I meet him every day.

Hmm. Sorry, but that is not my take at all. It’s the poop- and- pee- outdoor capital of the world. Worse than India. San Fran even has to buy pee resistant paint it’s such a problem! And then there is the public nudity in the gay district, with gentleman who never, and I do mean never, should appear naked. Wrinkles, sagging, yuck! It’s one of the hives of STDs. The poor mentally ill follow you, mumbling, into stores. Whenever they are not outside pooping on the street. Children have all but vanished as a species. Oh, and the entire of Oakland is a crime infested hell hole.

I have always thought living there would be like torture. But perhaps you were being sarcastic???

The last fifty years were very unusual, pretty much nothing but peace and prosperity. For the third world countries who are now prospering, at least more than they ever had before, that’s wonderful. But here in the US the result is a generation of narcissists. Everyone so spoiled and so quivering with sensitivity that they need to retreat to their teddy bears at the least harsh word.

Surely the odds favor a major depression or nasty world war. It is not going to pretty and how the heck the pampered darlings I know will be able to deal with it, I have not a clue.

But I agree with you, Lucretius. The worst sign God can give any of us is to just let us do want we want. The US is now so depraved though…even schools calling themselves Catholic ignoring clear Catholic doctrine. I am sickened.

There are some people who never see the filth under the whitewashed exterior. It’s like pulling the wool over their eyes, or hiding their head in the sand. San Francisco has a fantastic history, a beautiful setting, parks and art, but there is a LOT of filth and depravity in that city right under the surface, (or in certain OBVIOUS areas like the Tenderloin).

In Portland, it is not hidden. If you go downtown you will see all kinds of panhandlers and deadbeats inthe streets. Portland also has a very high proportion of gay people, like SF, compared with other cities. They drive up the housing prices since most are DINKS and are “tolerant” of the lowlife, however they drive the working poor out of their homes as they “gentrify” the city.

Which is way I love my Catholic faith and feel very blessed to live it!👍
From just another perspective, partially due to some of the things here is why I’m glad I’m not a faithful practicing Catholic.

Stay with us, Sy.

–from Matthew 7:13-14:
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

–from Matthew 7:21
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”

Keep your eyes on the prize, not on the splinters in others’ eyes.

Legal rights as specified in the Constitution and in law come from man, not God. Since we are discussing SCOTUS here, then we are talking about legal rights.
You don’t understand the Constitution nor Declaration of Independence if you think legal rights as specified in the Constitution come from man. It is explicit, rights flow from God.

So, looking at God’s US Constitution, slavery is allowed, freemen are worth more than slaves and women are not allowed to vote. You will forgive me if I decline to follow such a God, one who treats men differently because of the colour of their skin and who does not properly understand the nature of democracy.

Was Abraham Lincoln going against the work of God when he freed the slaves?

rossum Was Abraham Lincoln going against the work of God when he freed the slaves?
In 1435, when some Canary Islanders were forced into slavery, the pope promptly issued the bull Sicut Dudum. The pope demanded that all who had been enslaved were to be restored to their liberty immediately or those who had caused the enslavement, or who owned slaves, or who bought and sold slaves, would incur excommunication.

The pope calls the enslavement of natives both illegal and sinful. And excommunicated anyone holding or selling slaves.

About a century later, in 1537, Sublimus Deus was published by yet another pope. This bull was intended as the major pedagogical work on the Catholic church on the subject of slavery. It stated clearly that that all human beings are capable of faith and salvation, so they must never be made slaves.

Again, in 1591, Pope Gregory issued yet another bull on the subject, Ci, Sicuti, which reiterated that all who bought, sold, captured, or owned slaves to be excommunicated from the Catholic church.

The main tenets of Sublimus Deus would never be altered in any way, and are in effect today.

So, looking at God’s US Constitution,
With a beginning like this, I can see that you’re not giving a serious response.
slavery is allowed
Correct, Congress could not outlaw the slave trade for 20 years after passage of the Constitution. At the end of the 20 years, Congress did outlaw further importation of slaves. The fight in the 19th century was over those that remained enslaved here.

Of course that doesn’t challenge or invalidate the truth that rights flow from God.
freemen are worth more than slaves
The abolitionists and those who opposed slaver demanded this and forced the 3/5 provision to be inserted in the Constitution, as they wanted to limit the political power of the slave states. Or were you under the impression that this was some type of denigration to slaves?
and women are not allowed to vote.
Correct. Which was later changed. Still doesn’t change the truth that rights flow from God.
You will forgive me if I decline to follow such a God,
The Constitution isn’t a holy book of God’s revelation. It sets up a government, and the primary truth as revealed by God is that rights are inherent to man from God, and do not come from man or govt. Your statement here makes no sense.
who does not properly understand the nature of democracy.
The founding fathers rightly understood the nature of democracy, and that is why they avoided it like the plague.
Was Abraham Lincoln going against the work of God when he freed the slaves?
No. Like I said earlier, this is an unserious statement.
