St. Peter's struck by lightning after Pope Benedict's announcement!

hmm… but how frequently is it struck by lightning? Is this recent strike really out of the ordinary, considering that St. Peter’s Basilica is 450 feet tall and likely is the tallest structure in the area?

It may very well be a common occurence but it’s still pretty eery, Imo. The timing is lovely.
 
If it had been at the literal same time Pope Benedict was making the announcement I would think something of it, but since St. Peter’s is easily the tallest building in its vicinity, it’s only natural that it would attract most of the lightning in the area.
 
You don’t have to be a Brit not to believe everything that gets printed in The Sun.

Anyone making light about lightning rods should booster their proof of how many times it has been struck in the past, otherwise, I see that as a rather baseless statement. Maybe it’s all said in good fun but this must be said as well.
 
Being struck twice by lightning in the middle of a storm that produced numerous other cases of lightning that didn’t strike St. Peters isn’t the same as one bolt of lightning striking St. Peters on a cloudless sunny day.

Its amazing how St Peters dominates the landscape
Its 500 years old.
It can be seen for mile.
Like the Empire State building it has been struck by lightning thousands of times.
Still a great photo if real.

This was actually the first time the dome of the Basilica was ever struck by lightning.

I know a seminarian who is studying at the North American Pontifical College in Rome. He said their house shook for 10 seconds.

Great post Dale, well thought out, can you find any other pictures of lightning hitting St. Peter’s Basilica? Any references of it having happened before?? Rome’s a very sunny place.
