St Teresa of Avila - in Catholic Tradition

I just purchased the Collected Works of St. Teresa of Avila, Volume II which has:

-The way of Perfection
-The Interior Castle
-Meditations on the Song of Songs

I’m really excited!

She’s awesome! But always make sure to read the commentaries on her work and spirituality to make sure that you’re getting what the Church wants you to get. Sometimes people pull things out of it that is not quite it . . . as I would tell young people, close, but not quite.

Fire Within by Fr. Tom Dubay is a good book to have.

Also, good works to have are the stories of men and women who have taken what the msytics taught and have lived it in their daily lives. Then you can get a visual. That’s why I always recommend Mother Teresa after reading Way of Perfection. She’s the poster child for that book.

Another is The Practice of The Presence of God by Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, OCD.

Some of the translations went way overboard with taking the liberty to change the context to make the read more “appealing”. Most notable is Mirabai Starr. Whats interesting about her is she was raised in that area of New Mexico where that 15 century spanish dialect is still well preserved. So in truth had she just translated the book as written, it more than likely would have been very accurate.

Instead it becomes a process of presenting someone else’s personality as you perceive it.

Allison Peers just released another translation in 2010. She had one the more popular from the 70’s of Interior Castle. I have not read her new version.

Perhaps something was re-issued, but E. Allison Peers died years ago. 1950’s, I believe?

I like to keep his translations handy to compare with the ICS editions. Sometimes one makes the thought clearer to me than the other.

Fire Within does not reproduce what the Carmelites wrote. It’s a theological commentary. Fr. Tom tells you how the Church interprets what Teresa and John wrote. This is important. We want to think with the Church, not run around with 24 interpretations of the word “is”.

Some of the translations are horribly done. The good thing is that if you do not know how to read the original language, you’re none the wiser. The bad thing is that poor translation can change the meaning.

The other good thing is that unlike English, the Romance languages have not evolved very much over the last 1000 years. English had the good fortune of interacting with Latin, French and German and it’s own Anglo roots. Every time that the wind changed directions, meanings and even spelling change.

In Spanish, Italian and French, the meaning may change because the context changes. When Teresa has the vision of the interior castle, that was her context. She lived in a time when kings lived in castles. The full impact of this imagery can be lost on most Americans, since we have very little experience with castles. Those who have traveled to Europe, especially Spain and have taken tours of castles can see the rooms and the floor plan to which Teresa refers in her writing.

It’s always helpful to have a reference book to go with it. Dubay is one of the best in American English.

After reading and reflecting on the book, would you share with us your thoughts and how it affects your life as a Christian? 🙂
 
This is a bit of a minor thing, but a couple of posters in this mentioned that St. Teresa (or someone associated with her) played the guitar during some of the Masses at the convent. Where was this recorded? I’m trying to find the information, but to no avail.
