I hope a “farewell Mass” is put together or something.

I thought we could get a little ovation of our own going. Who would like to join me?

I normally do not go in too much for applause at Mass, but have always thought on occassion it is appropriate. Holding back an emotional response of this magnitude is like trying to dam the Mississippi in a flood.

It is very common for Papal Masses to have lots of applause at the end.

THE SPIRIT OF THE LITURGY, by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
"Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. " (Spirit of the Liturgy p. 198)

I’m not sure this applause can be said to have been caused by human achievement.

I thought applause was bad at the end of mass…😛

That being said I would absolutely applaud Pope Benedict.

However, I also wouldn’t be so hard on congregations who applaud spontaneously at the end of mass either because they feel moved by the music or the liturgy.
Ordinarily I think it is tasteless and tacky, such as in a Sunday to Sunday parish situation, but applause has been part and parcel for Papal appearances for at least as long as there has been video technology, it seems. Anglo culture seems to be very suspicious of clapping in church, and rightly so.

Most Catholics in Canada, and also in Britain (probably) are not Anglo.😉 I can’t speak for the USA. As a Catholic in Britain my family was a rarity in that we actually had real English Catholic roots (and you’re right we never clapped). Over here half the congregation is from southern Asia or South America, and many of the rest are from southern and eastern Europe, Africa or India.

Not that it really matters. I’m glad the Pope is “feeling the love” - he deserves it.👍

What about my Acadian cousins up there?

To the pope: Viva il Papa*:clapping::clapping::clapping:

I would say this argument could be made every time I have heard applause. But note that the Pope was not the one applauding.

Still, it is ironic. .

Yes, it would be very uncharacteristic of the Pope to clap.

This thread is not the Mass. It is OK to clap :clapping:
