I actually loved Babylon 5 best – it’s much of what I like about both series.

Star Trek is great at sci-fi – the possibilities of what high tech can do. They had a TNG eugenics episode that was awesome, and I think it highlights the problems with such a society. The borg was also pretty good as a counterpoint to what good things tech could do.

Wars is a better universe. It looks like what the future will look like. It has people doing more or less what I think people will be doing in the future. More real.

b5 is like the best possible traits of both.

I didn’t vote as I enjoy both…I saw the first Star Wars when it first came out…I must confess it surprised me…my cousins had to beg me to go with them…they had already seen it several times and had the LP soundtrack they played whenever I visited…I must confess…I was hooked the first time I saw it…and went several times to see it…not as many times as I went to see “Superman The Movie”…but at least two to three times.

The first “Star Trek” movie was so boring I almost left…I really enjoyed “Wrath of Khan” however…The subsequent “Star Trek” movies were not bad…but then neither was “The Return of the Jedi” or “The Phantom Menace”…enjoyable…but not spectacular as the first “Star Wars”…probably because I was use to the whole “Star Wars” story line by that time…for it’s day “Star Wars” was new and exciting…“Star Trek” not too much.

I enjoyed “Insurrection” probably the best of any “Star Trek” other than “Search for Spock”.

I very much enjoyed the re-boot of the “Star Trek” franchise from a couple years ago…and I MIGHTl go see the next “Star Trek” movie if they make another one…good chance however I’ll wait for it to come to DVD as I just can’t see paying $15.00 to see a movie where I have to pay $5.00 for a frozen Coke and $5.00 for some stale greasy popcorn…I love renting DVD’s at Redbox…$1.30 a movie is about what they’re worth…I will see the next “Batman the Dark Knight Rises” and “Superman, Man of Steel” at the theater though…“Thor”, Captian America", “Iron Man”, “Hulk”, “Spider-Man” and the “X-Men” franchise I saw all on DVD…glad I didn’t go to the movies to see them!

Don’t they have dollar shows where you come from? They are great you just have to wait a few months to see it. 😃 Saves a bunch of money.

Can I vote for Warhammer 40k? 🙂

❤️ Dan Abnett’s novels. And Graham McNeill’s.

Redbox is no longer a $1.00…I think they’re $1.29 now…but I use it from time to time…better than going to a movie theater and more convieient than Blockbuster…never get more than two DVD’s as I won’t sit thru more than 2 movies in an evening…and then only if I have nothing else to do…

Storm of Iron by Graham McNeil kindled my love for the law.

Matt Ward on the other hand :banghead:
I haven’t read Storm of Iron yet, there’s a connection to the law in it?

I’ve only read Graham’s Horus Heresy novels, as well as his Ultramarines series.

Storm of Iron is about the Iron Warriors attacking a planet (told primarily from the view point of one of their captains Honsou). It is after the Heresy so it is not connected to the Heresy Series.

Another good one to keep your eye out for is Grey Knights Omnibus by Ben Counter. Excellent series.

Star Trek hands down for me. Star Wars was very cool as a kid with all the action and jedis and light sabers and stuff. But really, on a plot level, those movies suck. It’s all action and character driven. When I was a kid it was very magical and fascinating and I was really into it. You grow up, and it’s really kind of boring and shallow. And don’t get me started on the prequals, those movies were probably 3 of the worst movies ever made. And frankly, with the way Lucas keeps picking at the movies and redoing this and that and trying to change things up all the time, I’ve lost a lot of respect for him and the movies.

They’ve been playing the Star Trek movies like crazy on the premium movie channels and I’ve been totally digging watching them. They are (almost) all good movies and several are great. Much more plot, and story driven. There’s a lot more to the Star Trek movies and shows than Star Wars.

Ah, Honsou is one of the villains in the Ultramarines series, also. I’ll have to check those out.

I meant, don’t your movie theaters have dollar shows? The ones around where I live usually put the shows into the $1 or $2 category a few months after the release. I just saw Sherlock Holmes 2 for $2 at the theater.

Anyhow, Star Trek is more intellectual then Star Wars. Certainly more driven by the dialogue and story then fancy action and props. Star Wars was meant to be simple and straightforward though. They were originally a take off of old space serials. I think that is partly why it was so successful it was able to cater to the whole family. It isn’t as attractive nowadays due to the effects being a bit outdated. I watched it for the first time when I was 15 and loved it though. The soundtrack is simply amazing!

Star Trek is objectively better, IMO. (I know ‘objectively’ and ‘IMO’ sorta contradict each other, but think you get my meaning anyway).

But I like Star Wars better, subjectively.

love em both and its hard to compare the two cause there both different. Star Wars is your classic space opera inspired by the old buck rogers and flash gordon serials in the 1930s plus there movies while star trek on the other hand is a tv show that explores human characteristics and more plot driven.

I find them hard to compare as they are actually very different despite both being Sci-Fi. Star Wars takes place in another galaxy in a different reality while Star Trek is just the future of our reality.

Star Wars is far superior, since the “uniforms” in Star Trek are completely ridiculous. They look like pajamas.

Huh? Star Wars isn’t in a “different reality”. It’s just “a long time ago”, as the opening narration states.

But it takes place in a Galaxy FAR FAR Away…So obviously its not in OUR Galaxy. 😉

And I’d rather have a Wookiee than a Borg!

No…they don’t…at least not that Ive found…there’s a “rat trap” theater on the other side of town that doesn’t allow children. Alcohol is served during the movies and it’s about $8-10 depending on when one goes…the seats are old, dirty, uncomforable…the adults loud, obnoxious and by the time the movie is over drunk…🙂

Huh! I’m surprised I never responded to this thread back in 2005.

My answer to the question is not a simple one or the other.

I like the collective Star Trek TV series the best.
I like Episodes IV - VI of Star Wars second
I like the Star Wars extended universe novels third
I like the collective Star Trek movies fourth
.
.
.
And I like Episodes I - III of Star Wars last.

It’s hard for me to compare television series with movies. They are very different forms of story-telling. Star Trek was excellent as a television series and the characters and back-story developed over time. The movies, in my opinion, were not so great. The movies depended on your knowledge of the series to really understand. With the possible exception of Wrath of Khan, I don’t think most people new to Star Trek could really enjoy any of the other movies. I am not usually a fan of movies that have lots of important characters. Star Trek has so many characters that it is hard to give each character his or her due without the plot of the movie getting lost. The movies did an admirable job of making the existing fans happy but probably left non-fans puzzled.

The original Star Wars movie (Episode IV) was written to be a movie! It did not depend on any past knowledge. It was really a fairly simple story and it had a fairly simple story. There were relatively few important characters. With minor (although important) exceptions the storyline revolved around the character of Luke. Episodes V and VI were more complex since the characters and story-lines for Han, Leia, and Darth Vadar were addressed as well as those for Luke.

Episodes I - III of Star Wars should have been a television series. They were WAY too complex for movies. I think Lucas was trying cram several dozen comic books/novels worth of information into three movies. It seemed like the animation was more the star of the movie than were the characters. I have really enjoyed reading the Star Wars novels. (The quality varies from book to book of course) But those novels would not have made good movies.

Sometimes I miss the television mini-series form of story telling. It works really well for stories that are too complex for a movie.

Trekkie here.

“Star Trek,” hands down. 🙂

(Overall “Blake’s 7” wins. :p)
