Pardon me, but I’m a little confused here. Is Palpatane the Chancellor/Emperor?
Oh goodness, next you’re going to be telling us that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father!

Star Trek is cheesy and pointless. On the other hand, Star Wars is about the unending battle between good and evil.
Your comment made me realize something…if it had been switched (i.e. “star wars is pointless”, etc) I would have defended the films. I like Star Trek, but it’s just not something I care about defending from those who don’t. I guess Star Wars wins for me for that reason too.

I’m glad I could be of service, in the meantime, everyone vote on my SW vs. LOTR poll. :cool:

Bear in mind that both series seem to take place in an alternate universe where sound can travel in a vacuum and no matter what happens to the ship, it always still has gravity (except the Klingon ship in Undiscovered Country). Also (ST only, not SW), all the aliens speak English (same on the SG1 series on SciFi). As a linguist, that bugs me.
Hold on there. First neither takes place in an alternate universe. Star Wars takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far away from our own, but in our universe. Star Trek takes place in our universe and galaxy, but in the future. In Star Trek, all the aliens do not speak English, but are heard in English due to the universal translater created on the Star Trek Enterprise series.

I agree with Space Ghost, apples and oranges.

A better comparison in my mind is Star Wars Vs. Dune (as done by SciFi Channel)

Gotta go with Star Wars. It’s just more fun. Not to mention Star Trek bores me silly.

Blashphemy… how sad… oh… I guess Star Wars is fine, but is inferior to Star Trek

Even in the future in our own galaxy, sound will not travel in a vacuum. As regards the universal translator, trust me on this (retired guv’mint linguist and polyglot)–it will not work. It was a cheap trick used by the Star Trek writers so they would not have to deal with different languages.

I stand by my comments. Different universe altogether.

Oh, and I forgot one. In their universes the law of inertia does not work. If you cut power, the spaceship comes to a stop (as opposed to inertia-fueled coasting in our universe). Was just reading today in the paper about Voyager-1–it’s been out of fuel for decades, but it’s doing 46,000 mph.

Heresy!!! Blasphemy!!! 😃

Seriously, in Star Trek, intertia doesn’t apply because the warp engines generate a warp field around the vessel, distorting space-time and pushing the vessel into subspace. It’s the field that “moves” relative to the rest of the universe, allowing FTL travel. When the engines are cut down, the warp field collapses, and the vessel enters normal space. Since the vessel has always been stationary relative to the field, it comes to a full stop. Inertia doesn’t apply.

When impulse engines or thrusters cut off, the vessel DOES continue due to intertial velocity because impulse engines work in normal space, subject to Newtonian and Einsteinian laws.

Now, Star Wars heret…errrr… fans, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think their hyperdrives generate artificial wormholes, yes?

Hahahahaha, not sad at all! 🙂 Trek is just too uppity for me. It’s to grey. I like the defined good and evil in Star Wars; the fact that there is black and white to be found. It’s more gritty as opposed to Trek’s very sanitized “clean” appearance. I dunno, I watch Star Wars as an escape. Trek just doesn’t hold my interest. Bores me to tears really.

But it’s cool, Trek can’t hold a candle to Wars, someday you’ll see that. 😉

Oh Bullocks! Spock,Tribles and The Borge blows away Star Wars!

no contest, Star Wars wins hands down… six movies grossing over 3 BILLION dollars and still counting !!!

(and that’s with episode 1 and 2 being real stinkers)

I suspect Star Wars wins in the money department, but does anyone have an idea what the total gross is for all Star Trek series, DVD, merchandise, movies, etc.?

Ok. If you’re talking figuratively, I can see how what happens, couldn’t possibly happen in our universe.

The stories are fiction, but the setting for these works of fiction is our universe. That’s what I meant. Besides, there aren’t any other universes, are there? 🙂

I miss “Babylon 5”;

Don’t remember “Deep Space 9” - I refuse to believe I’ve not seen it.

think “Andromeda” is not that good 😦 ;

“ST - TNG”: tosh (Whoopi Goldberg in “Star Trek” ?); nothing happens that could not happen on earth, more or less. If I want a shrink (which I don’t), somebody with a better taste in hats than is indicated. TNG lacks the quality which Tolkien’s mythos possesses in abundance: it lacks mythopoietic truth. Wesley Crusher should be marooned on Skaro (see Who, Doctor) and turned into a Dalek. Just like that git Data. What this lot need is an attack of Insectoids.

“ST - Enterprise”: unmissable. The weakest episode on “Enterprise” is superior to the best of “TNG”. The stories in “Enterprise” need more than one episode to unfold to their fullest extent; quite unlike those in the series with Shatner and co.

Dune - the Film.

What can one say that has not been said already ? There is only one Tolkien, and it isn’t Herbert (not on the evidence of this lumpen monstrosity, anyway). Some ingenious & promising ideas are smothered by a film that takes itself much too seriously, and too often turns into “Conan the Barbarian” with light-sabres. Which brings us to

Star Wars

Planet of the Apes - films

1 - the original and best.
2 - good on the whole, even if it is liable to substitute barbarity for ideas
3 - the only real weakness here is…on second thoughts, no spoilers.
4 - the weakest
5 - like 4, too easy to mistake for a film unrelated to the rest of the series. The real excitement is at the end, because of the dating of events mentioned in 1. (Talking of dating, the chronology of 3 is not quite consistent with that of 1: unless one presumes that the difference can be accounted for by some unmentioned astronautic escapade such as hopping dimensions. Or something.)

PotA - TV series: all 14 episodes are long forgotten.

The Twilight Zone (new): a few hits

TTZ - (old): a good number of hits; and some are hard to forget (especially when “The Simpsons” takes a plot from them). And some, are haunting.

ST films:

1 = the best
2 = never tire of it; good story, which absorbs the occasional moments of silliness
3 = would like to see it again, as it follows organically from the preceding.
4 = better forgotten
5 = as above, only more so - good in parts
6 = in the main, very good - but a higher archness quotient than in 1.
7 etc = not seen

ST on TV

That first episode improves with viewing. Favourite over all: “The Tunnel”.

Battlestar Galactica - the film

Very watchable. The naming is a bit weak at times, but plot and story very satisfying, despite the occasional dreary bit (in the second half). Whether the events of the penultimate scene leave much room for further developments of that element in the plot may be questioned. And it would be interesting to know how such excellent English could be spoken by a being with a head like an over-large & over-cooked tomato.

BG - TV series

The words “mean machine” were made for the Cylons; pity they are so easy to thwart.

Dr Who

I’m delighted to see “Dr Who” come back (though I hope that there will be a return to the old format of adventures in several episodes)

Voyage to the Bottom of The Sea

Irwin Allen is very watchable - his giant blue sea-spider in one episode of is almost as scary as Peter Jackson’s version of Shelob: and Allen did not have computer animation.

Land of the Giants

A bit hit-and-miss, but mostly hit. Especially the episode with the spider.

Time Tunnel

“What goes around, comes around”. Just like the central characters. There are no spiders.

Stargate SG -1

One episode was almost well-plotted. Nice opening visuals (mostly) - pity about the content.

IMO, the most interesting bits are those metaphysical (& therefore theological) implications.

Which is probably why I prefer ST to SW - though ST has the advantage of extending over many TV series too; which in my book counts as an Unfair Advantage. ##

But that’s what cash-cows are for: bringing in cash 🙂

“Gross” ? - you said it 🙂 ##

Hahahaha 🙂

Scenario to play with:

Spock tries that silly neck pinch on Vader. Can’t get close enough to touch Vader though as he’s already off his feet in the air being choked by our boy Darth V.

Tribbles. Eaten as snacks by Wookies. The end.

Borg cube comes flying along but makes the mistake of getting in the path of the Death Star. Somewhere in the depths of the Death Star are heard the words, “You may fire when ready.” Poof. No more Borg.

😉

If the Klingons couldn’t get rid of Tribbles, I don’t think the Wookiees would fare much better.

What about the big-budget musical version, “Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want To Get Off”, starring Troy McClure?
