Well, it’s the first time I’ve heard anyone refer to Scott Hahn as narrow-minded. 🤷 I say keep doing your own reading as long as what you are reading is faithful to the Church. I am reading everything. 😃

BTW, there is a show on EWTN called the Journey Home, and you can also listen to past programs on the internet. I have learned a lot from it, and I love hearing about other people’s conversions. You might be interested in that as well.

Yeah I’m an RCIA’er too now, and I feel there are some problems in mine. Centering prayer was taught as a legitimate prayer form , right next to the Rosary. Uhhh, be careful what your people teach you there… always take with a grain of salt and verify yourself before making it permanent accepted info in your spiritual repertoire.

😦

Never heard of the term “centering prayer.” What is that anyway?

It’s a mix of eastern religious prayer and Christian words/ideas, but is not truly a legitimate form of prayer for Catholics. Read this article, from Catholic Answers here, and see for your self if it is something you would do or condone in your parish. I already have a meeting scheduled with the head pastor here to bring this to his attention as I hope it is just something that hasn’t been addressed yet, instead of something the clergy here are “OK” with.

Are there any REAL Catholics left? … coming from a RCIA catechumen must boggle peoples minds…

Never heard of centering prayer so guess I am sort of dumb.Oh what is a REAL Catholic?

I had previously mentioned this to the teacher last week, and he had no problems and said they were all excellent sources as long as I maintained a balance with reading the catechism and bible. However, my teacher this week stated that she would prefer I not listend to the show or attend this site or read the book by Scott Hahn. Her reason for this was that these sources were “too narrow minded.”
If the one teacher thinks it’s okay, and the other doesn’t, it’s just a difference of opinions. I also don’t know what she means by “narrow minded” with regard to Scott Hahn - he is a Charismatic Franciscan, for heaven’s sake.

Maybe she has had experiences with people who have excitable personalities falling into legalism with some of this stuff, or not realizing that the Church permits a wide variety of spiritualities, and demanding that everyone has to be a certain way or else they can’t be “really” Catholic. 🤷

Someone who follows what the Catholic Church teaches without getting it all mixed up with other religions such as Protestantism, Buddhism, New Age, etc., and without compromising with the atheists.

Thank you so much, j2c99, for the link to the article explaining centering prayer. Just another fancy phrase for transcendental meditation to which I do not subscribe. Centering prayer appears to be relatively harmless on its face, but actually seems to draw us into our own self and away from intimacy with God. No thanks, but I’ll stick with prayers of forgiveness, thanksgiving, and petition directly to my one and only Lord. I suppose some people view centering prayer as some kind of a supplement to their “regular” prayer life, but as the article pointed out, there are dangers going down that road. Thanks again for sharing the link. I should also mention that we had a priest at our parish who, as part of his Thursday evening homily (but never on the weekend) had the congregation practice deep breathing and concentration on objects, etc. Although it was not addressed directly as a the source of his transfer to a different parish, the reason for his departure was obvious to most. Additionally, there was a great article in Catholic Answers a few years ago comparing Jesus and Buddha. Very intellectual and quite interesting. However, the article concluded with the indisputable statement, “Jesus is God; Buddha is not.” As for me and my house…

sure lets a lot of people out :hmmm:

Maybe they have. Read mark 9:41-42
I did; it says “If they are doing miracles in my name, do not stop them, for he who is not against us is for us.”

Did you read Matthew 7:14? (Narrow is the way, and few there be, that find it.)

God has revealed it to His Church, the Catholic Church. When we listen to the Church we cannot go wrong. (First Timothy 3:15) 🙂

Mark 9:40 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name Because you belong to me verily I say unto youhe shall not loose his reward. He did not say only if you are a Catholic:thumbsup:

Well, I finally took the plunge. RCIA starts Oct 7 and I’m going to be there. I talked with the director of Christian Education today and she seemed very nice.

It won’t be like I’m starting from scratch…I’ve just finished a course called “We Believe, a Survey of the Catholic Faith” by Oscar Lukefahr. The course was free from Catholic Home Study Service. It is sponsored by the Vincentian community and the Missouri Knights of Columbus. Father Lukefahr is the director and the course was excellant.

I’m a former Baptist and I’m looking forward to “coming home”. I’m as excited as a teenager.

William
