Don’t Listen To The Africans, Says Catholic Cardinal

“In a stunning new interview, German Cardinal Walter Kasper has said that African Catholics “should not tell us too much what we have to do” and admitted that they are not being listened to at the Vatican’s current synod as it takes up matters including homosexuality, divorce, remarriage, and family life.”
Excellent link McCall, thank you for sharing! God bless you:)

Just the same thing as the OP, why post it again? Are you accusing Kasper of racism?
I appreciate that she posted the link, thank you McCall! 🙂 I enjoy reading the articles, as well as the commentaries.

I do not see McCall accusing Kasper of anything, why are you accusing her of that? :o Did I miss the accusation somewhere???

Pax.

I think the African Bishops won’t talk about homosexuality because they are afraid it may get more gay persons killed by the African governments who do that.😦
People in the West have really strange notions bout life in Afric. Do yu know Africans never used to bother with homoesxuals until western liberals started forcing this on them? those laws against homosexuals are british colonial laws that were never applied because police have better things to do thn inestigte how people having sex. the push back (from only 2 countries!-Nigeria and Uganda, there are 52 countries in Africa) was a way to reassert African cultural independence from what Africans see as an imposition from white people using human rights to force Africans to pretend they don’t think homosexuality is something completely bad. I see the same push back in India and Russia. you will find in these countries in practice homosexuals have been left alone before western liberals tried to impose their culture on the whole world. in most African countries, you wil be shunned if you are public homosexual but this is true whether there are laws or not because this is just society and no government can tell the society to say homosexuality is normal because the people will think they have gone mad.

The liberals in West are very condescending racists towards Africa. when Africas are polled and over 90% say bluntly they want nothing like normalization of homosexuality, I read them in their news saying that Africans have been pushed by American conservatives as if Africans are so stupid that they cannot make their own minds up about anything. I ask them to travel to the most rural African places where they don’t mch know anything about american conservatives or American politics and poll them instead of polling people in the cities, and I will be shocked if the results are not 100% against anything remotely resembling homosexual marriage.🤷

African bishops have stopped speaking on these issues because they are being silenced.

Many of the Ugandan bishops initially supported the anti-homosexuality bill until they mysteriously stopped speaking about it. Following their support for the bill more than one episcopal appointment in Uganda went to a westerner. Something which had stopped happening a while ago but has mysteriously started happening again.

I also spoke to a Ugandan priest who said his bishop had been threatened with donor cuts by Western Catholic donors if he continued to support the anti-homosexuality bill. Sadly, a lot of Western donors to Africa are liberals and African bishops have to balance aid programs against preaching the fullness of the Gospel.

Kasper’s not a racist. He has a reputation for dismissing those who disagree with him. Like most liberal Catholics, he can’t stand authentic dialogue.

The Zenit interview has been taken down. It would appear there was a problem with the report.

The cardinal is reported as saying today that he didn’t talk to Zenit about African bishops.

“I am appalled. I have never spoken this way about Africans and I never would. I assure you that in these days and weeks . . . nobody from Zenit has introduced themselves to me and no one has asked for an interview. Nobody from Zenit has had an interview from me.”

:eek::eek::eek:

Edward pentin says the interview with cardinal kasper about the african bishops did take place, and put the audio up on his website:

**OOPS! **
His eminence made no comment about not wanting his remarks published. It depends on the context, but normally in such a situation, comments are considered on the record unless otherwise requested.
If there was a misunderstanding, I apologise, but I stand by the interview that was published as a correct account of the exchange.

May I observe…
The title of the thread is not really representative of the Cardinal’s comments.

I’m utterly amazed that the radical conservative Catholics will side with sleazy journalism rather than give leaders of our Church the basic respect they warrant.

I don’t normally do this but changed to: “Statements on Cardinal Kasper Interview”

National Catholic Register and Zenit are major publications, they aren’t “sleazy” in the slightest

Precisely, he was caught of the cuff and was stating a point of fact.

In Africa, the bishops cannot pastor to homosexuals in the same manner as the Western bishops, because homosexuality is outlawed in most African countries, so the situation will have to be dealt with in an entirely different manner.

As the West fully recognise homosexuality, with most countries now legislating for SSM, the pastoring from the Church will be completely different in both areas of the world.

The journalist misrepresented himself to gain an interview. The questions were asked in a way to elicit a comment ripe for a sensationalist headline to stir up the bloviating hoi polloi. He probably needs to be let go.

More slander from the media, and instant replay here at CAF. I see that that thread is well covered by the usual folks. LOOK at what Pentin said, for pete’s sake.
I transcribed the recording of our conversation, and my iPhone on which I recorded the exchange was visible. I introduced myself as a journalist with the** [National Catholic] Register,** and the others also introduced themselves as journalists. I therefore figured the interview was on the record and His Eminence appeared happy to talk with us. In the end,
I posted the full interview in ZENIT rather than the Register. ZENIT removed the article on Thursday in response to Cardinal Kasper’s denial.
So Kasper was RIGHT! He did not have anyone come to him from Zenit requesting an interview! And he did not speak against the African Bishops in any sort of demeaning way…
Q But are African participants listened to in this regard?
He simply said, “No, the majority of them [who hold these views won’t speak about them].”

I’m guessing that Cardinal Kasper denied the interview because:
  • It was a fairly quick and informal interview (it was given “as [Cardinal Kasper] left the Synod hall” according to the reporter). The cardinal probably just didn’t remember it too well on such a busy day.
  • The reporter introduced himself as a representative of NCRegister, but the interview was posted on Zenit. Cardinal Kasper said specifically in his denial that he had not spoken to any reporters from Zenit. That is undoubtedly true. Kasper just didn’t realize that the NCRegister reporter he spoke to briefly had the material posted on Zenit.

Ok, but he also said, “I have never spoken this way about Africans and I never would”, when there is an audio tape of him saying it.

And for those saying there isn’t anything wrong with his comments, Kasper himself is saying he is appalled and would never speak that way. He denies he said these things, but he’s certainly admitting the remarks would be problematic.

His response could have been “I did say those things, but what I said is ok because what I really meant is…” and then explain.

But instead he’s saying “Those comments are appalling, I would never say things like that because they are problematic”.

That’s true; I sort of meant to cover that by mentioning that this was a very informal and quick interview given while the cardinal was leaving the synod hall. I am not really comfortable with what the cardinal said, and if he said it then it’s fair to hold him accountable. But it wouldn’t be very charitable to read too deeply into the offhand comments of a busy 81-year-old cardinal trying to manage 10 things at once.
