Statistics on Fatherless Children in America

I don’t think that’s pessimism so much as realism. Society is in need of repair
Society has been in need of repair since the day Adam sinned and blamed his wife, and Eve blamed the serpent for her sin.

A large part of the needed repair is contained in God’s command for the regulation of the family: Honor your father and mother. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

True, which is why dscath taking issue with such an innocuous statement has society needing repair is ridiculous.

Experts would say the “Fatherless” program basically starts with welfare and the Great Society program (LBJ) . Before then, in 1960 and whenever, rates of single-parent homes in the African American community were probably similar to all other groups.

That’s pretty much proven by statistics.

Public assistance and factors like that are blamed. Receive more form the government if you meet certain conditions.

People speak of reparations, fine, I respect that but so much has already been spent.

How is it that these reforms will prevent further children from being BORN out of WEDLOCK?
Yeah, we went off topic there.

Some women have children out of wedlock on purpose
Some women are not married but are in a committed relationship with a partner
Some women decide the father isn’t a worthy partner and don’t marry him.
The supposition here is that black children are fatherless because of racism or incarceration rather than male irresponsibility.
All three are issues.

And female responsibility. Women need to choose their partners well.

Politifact may quibble with some of this; but at the least, this is a good place to start looking at the problem.

On the Sunday when we celebrate the Holy Family last December, I sort of ambushed our rector after mass with my question, “How do we teach children to honor their father and mother when their parents do so little that is honorable?”

I had some specific examples in mind. My next door neighbor was 48 years old when she adopted three children who were her biological great-nephew and great-nieces. They were one, two, and three years old at the time. Their mother lost custody when she went to prison. She had three kids in three years with three different fathers. Two of the fathers are not even known, and the father of the oldest one is in prison for what amounts to a life sentence for child abuse, child neglect, child endangerment, manufacture and sale of a controlled substance (meth) in a home with three babies, dangerous felon in possession of a handgun, and habitual offender sentence enhancement. When he was not using methamphetamine to pimp out under age girls, maybe he was a nice guy. Who am I to judge?

That is somewhat true, but I still tend to think that the more prevalent problem in black communities vis a vis children being born out of wedlock is sexual irresponsibility (both partners are to blame, but maybe males more so because no one is holding them accountable to bear responsibility for the rearing of their child, hence, the reason these children are fatherless).

Some people will blame racism; and have problem with the so-called leadership at the top.

In this case, the leadership at the top, has done more to help African Americans in modern time than any other president.

A lot of the current turmoil is to prevent flight of minorities to the Republican party or at least, voting for them so we have more decades of these problems.

Blaming racism seems about the only thing, the left can do and they have done nothing to alleviate the problem. If not make it worse, remind me, who has mainly died since these protests began? Whose businesses have been burned down?

You could argue that and to a degree you would be right, but the end result of children growing up fatherless should at least warrant the fact that men are NOT taking care of their offspring.

Humanae vitae pretty much prophesied what would happen with the legal and widespread use of birth control, i.e., women would be objectified.

One could also argue that widespread birth control use has freed women to achieve their greatest potential.

That too because we see the resultant effects borne out over time.

The second example I had in mind was the reason I have posted very little since October. I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to help a man, now 39 years old, who was living in the garage of a 60 year old woman. Both have serious problems with drug abuse, mental illness, and criminal activity.

“Billy” comes from what would seem to be a very successful family. His father owns his own businees and his mother is a prescribing nurse. His grandfather was an All-American football player and owned parts of both an NFL and MLB teams worth tens of millions now. Uncles on his father’s side of the family include an obstetrician, a state senator, and the President and CEO of one of the world’s best known corporations.

Unfortunately, both his parents were also alcoholics and they divorced when “Billy” was nine. Bad parenting is apparently contagious. “Billy” and his girlfriend had a baby and the grandparents, hospital, Children and Family Services, and law enforcement did not intervene to prevent two unmarried heroin addicts from taking custody of a newborn baby who already had physical problems because the mother was using heroin during her pregnancy. The baby died at three months while both his parents were strung out on heroin. They both went to prison for neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a class A felony in Indiana.

My results were not what I hoped for. Tomorrow, “Billy” is being sentenced for felony tresspass. It is his third felony conviction to go with his seven misdemeanor convictions.

How free are women when they are objectified rather than loved?
I disagree with your premise. Women are not objectified in every relationship that uses contraception. An unplanned pregnancy can derail a woman’s plans.
One would be wrong.
No, I’m not. I know this is a Catholic site, and I’ve been a Catholic my whole life, but for some women having children is not “achieving their greatest potential”.

When we were fertile we used NFP. I am not an advocate of artificial birth control. BUT, if out-of-wedlock births are such a scourge, then one must at least acknowledge that birth control can play a part for some people.

What more needs to be said?
