Staying, Leaving?

Well, welcome to this side of the Tiber. You know, the CC is just a place where sinners help other sinners find bread. There are no “lost” causes in St. Peter’s boat.

Actually, in the US, things have changed dramatically since the publication of the John Jay Report. We need to take a beat and look at the data:

“By finding almost no cases after 2002, the grand jury’s conclusions are consistent with previous studies showing that Catholic Church reforms in the United States drastically reduced the incidence of clergy child abuse,” Greg Burke, director of the Vatican’s press office, said Thursday.

Exactly, when all seems lost it is then Our Lord will rise His church up!

Who is staying in the Church as a faithful Catholic after the scandals an who, if anyone is leaving?

I plan to stay but I feel kind of uncomfortable about staying? Anyone else?
If this ruins Catholicism for you, you didn’t know what you professed.

The Church began with two thieves watching God die, which is the worst outrage ever perpetrated.
The first Church leadership all abandoned Christ, except for his sorrowful mother and John.
The first Church banker used the treasury to finance deicide. A personal betrayal that is beyond imagination.
Think about that.

Like I said, if this ruins Catholicism for you, you never knew what you professed.

I’m saying if someone goes out of their way to make an account on a catholic forum they are more than likely have above average commitment to the Catholic Church. So your question seems a little redundant to be asked here.

Honestly, I don’t know. I joined the Church in 2002, in that long Lent that began with scandal from Boston and then spread to other dioceses. I never doubted my decision then.

But now, I am so angry. The rot is so deep and widespread in the Church hierarchy, as events this summer have showed, first with Card. McCarrick and then with the PA grand jury report. Even Pope Francis’ letter from a couple days ago made me so angry – apologizing and praying when he leaves in office some of the bishops/cardinals who ignored reports of abuse! Or after he insulted the survivors of priestly abuse in Chile, or overturned Pope Benedict’s laicization of Don Mauro Inzoli, etc. I am so angry at all the cheap talk from the hierarchy.

I have worked in child protection, I know the score, I know that sexual abuse happens in other situations and not just in the Church. But the Church hierarchy’s response to this is simply indefensible.

My oldest child is no longer attending Mass, sadly, and my second-oldest is struggling too. Despite my attempts to hold on to my faith, I find myself increasingly drawn back to my Protestant roots. I don’t know what will happen.

Jesus wouldn’t want you to leave. To say people are angry and upset is an understatement, those that where supposed to be apostles of Christ did awful things but they in no way represent Jesus or His church we must never forget that.

Stay close and focus on Jesus, His teachings and His church are still the same. The Holy Mass which He is and always will be present in will never change. Jesus is the reason I am Catholic because it is the true church - One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church.

I am a Catholic and will stay that way. However, I have not paid a penny to the US Church in 20 years and have no intention of paying a penny in the future. If they want to hire lawyers to fight increasing the statute of limitations or pay reparations, they’re on their own.

Well, not really CAF has all kinds, including atheists.

I find there’s Jesus in many places. I’ve got a Lutheran spouse who is a pastor. I’ve got a foot in both, my Catholic roots and my spouse. We are rasing our child mostly in the Lutheran Church, but that is because I believe faith is most importantly shared as a family. That said we attend church from time to time with my parents, my son recently wanted us (entirely his idea) to stay the night at Grandma’s to he could attend mass.

I’m also considering putting him in first communion classes so he can participate more and be exposed more to the Catholic side more. Some of you might call this “cafeteria”, fine. But many of you here are willing to eat even the rotting food just because it’s on the table. Things like these sex scandals are a big part of the reason I’m not glued to the Catholic church even though I probably know more about Catholic theology than many church goers…probably why I stick around here.
