Stealing the Eucharist

I have a question on the Eucharist. In Orlando, a UCF student received the body of Christ, but did not eat it. Instead, he put it in his pocket and removed it from the church to show a friend. He said he wanted his friend to see what is was like. He did return it to the church a week later, which makes me think he wasn’t even Catholic.

Naturally, church officials are quite upset. The Holy MInisters are supposed to stop someone who does not eat or drink the body/blood, but he was allowed to put it in his pocket and leave the church with it. Shouldn’t the priest have been notified? What should happen to this person? What if anything will happen to him if he’s Catholic?
I can imagine. you are not suppost to be able to “borrow” GOD to show your friends and family.
how ever, they can visit him anytime he is in repose there. and it’s a bad move of the communion ministers who are suppost to be watching for this.

Exactly… see, even some non-Catholics understand.😉

They were watching. And they did catch him. He then put the Host into his mouth, deliberately misleading people, and removed it secretly once at his pew.

The student ushers tried to pry the Host out of his hands once they realized he wasn’t consuming it. They were watching.

I’m not sure why the blame is falling on anyone other than this sad, sad man. I’ve seen people blaming the ministers, the ushers, even the entire post Vatican II Church, when the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the individual who descecrated the Host.

If he *really * wanted to “educate” a non Catholic, I am sure he would have been more than welcome to make an appt with the priest and I am sure the priest would have been more than happy to answer any and all questions regarding the Eucharist and pehaps even showed them an unconsecrated host. This guy was up to something, he just got caught and now he is trying to back peddle his way out and make everyone else look like big ole’ meanies!

The Pope has to lift the excommunication:

Can. 1367 A person who throws away the consecrated species or takes or retains them for a sacrilegious purpose incurs a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See; moreover, a cleric can be punished with another penalty, not excluding dismissal from the clerical state.
I believe that includes the Holy Father’s designee, which could very well be the Archbishop.

About 25 years ago I showed up for morning Mass and the entire tabernacle had been stolen. It was found by the police behind a local shopping center. The tabernacle showed signs of attempts to break into to steal the (gold?) Ciborium. A few consecrated hosts were found on the ground. Young teens were to blame. Also stolen were the microphones. The priests who showed up for Mass were so shaken at the tradgedy (one priest wept), they found it difficult to say Mass, but they did. The local Bishop was immediately notified. The tabernacle was recovered but sent to the Diocesan office and the next day a new one replaced it. After that the doors were kept locked before and after Mass.

This is true. And I’ve heard stories of people actually packing their mouth with cotton in order to receive on the tongue, but keep the mouth dry enough to remove the Host later.

However- in this particular case, I think the decision to remove the Host once it was in his mouth was more out of spite in response to his “assault” (which he currently has a case pending in the student court) by the usher. To take his story at face value, he sounds as if it was all an “innocent” intent to show the Host to a friend (disbelieving eyeroll here). Had he received on the tongue to begin with, pretended to consume the host, then removed it once back at his seat, he would no longer be able to claim any sort of “innocent” intent.
Moreover, he brought a ziploc bag with him to put it in so it was pre-meditated. Anyone with a Catholic upbringing would know that The Body of Christ is not for show and tell. Witnesses from the Mass (as reported in another thread which apparently has been deleted) said that he and his mates were reading out loud from Reformation texts during the Mass and being generally disruptive. This was just the grande finale.

The news reports have been very upsetting as they call the Blessed Sacrament a ‘wafer’ and a ‘symbol’ or a ‘cracker’ that has had magic words said over it. Very offensive and it would not be condoned against any other faith.

It is very trying and I have had to really focus on the words of Jesus as they put Him to death most cruelly, “Father, forgive them. They know not what they do.”

We need to offer public prayers of reparation for this outrage against the Blessed Sacrament. Does anyone know if the local Archibishop is organising anything? What prayers would these be and how can we help?

Regarding the bolded part of your statement, I did not hear about that ! That puts a whole other spin on the story (I thought he just put the Host in a ziploc bag after he got home, I didn’t know he brought it to church w/ him!).

And my husband is also very upset at how the news sources are reporting this, basically downplaying the Real Presence. 😦

In Christ,

Ellen

In view of Professor Myers promise to desecrate the Eucharist, perhaps he would be equally willing to also desecrate the Quran, the Bible, the flag, and motherhood, and perhaps say something derogatory about academic freedom while he’s at it, and of course posting photos of each desecration on his blog. The University, as his employer, might object more strenuously to the non-Catholic desecrations.

“Cook said he still hopes to meet with the local Bishop to discuss prohibiting the use of force to recover the Eucharist. He also wants an apology.”

Hmmm…a deliberate attempt to antagonize, and he wants an apology.

My guess is that if he were to have the sand to try to desecrate the Koran durning a Muslim service, there’d be a little more than physical restraint involved…not to mention he’d probably be arraigned on a hate crime.

Which, by the way (not that the parish or diocese involved would actually do it), but couldn’t he be accused of a hat crime?

And “Professor” Myers of conspiracy to commit a hate crime?

In any case, what these two need is our prayers rather than the good thrashing that our weak side would rather see them receive.

more reason to go back to recieving on the toungue and kneeling.

Eric except yesterday when the eucharist got stuck to the roof of my mouth.

I am not sure why, but I am still shocked by the whole story.
“I am returning the Eucharist to you in response to the e-mails I have received from Catholics in the UCF community,” Cook wrote in a letter to the church.[from the http://www.wftv.com/news/16806050/detail.html”]link above
.]
Not, “I am returning the Eucharist [because]”:
a) if I was a Catholic it is the ultimate disrespect to God, His Church, and its people
b) if he was a Catholic it is a very grave sin, indeed
c) he is returning the Eucharist because he didn’t know any better and is truly sorry

Instead, he’s returning the Eucharist because he received Emails? What, the Internet is his conscience now? He didn’t get the point any earlier with face-to-face confrontation?
“I still want the community to understand that the use physical force is wrong, especially when based on assumptions. However, I feel it is unnecessary to cause pain for those who are not at fault in this situation.”
What assumptions? He did it! And how KIND and FORGIVING he is to those who tried to STOP him from committing desecration to the Body of Our Lord. And he wants an apology? Sheesh.

Help me to pray for his disordered actions and lack of understanding, or attention-getting stunt. Because not only for what he did, but his reaction makes me very, very, upset.

Apparently it was just stolen from a Cathedral in Corpus Christi, Texas. caller.com/news/2008/jul/15/eucharist-taken-cathedral-tabernacle/

May I recommend you don’t fret too much about it, unless you can do something positive about this crime. Sounds like this genius wasn’t expecting the barracking he got, even if it was by email.

What he may not realise is that the internet has a long memory, and anyone searching on his name, like future employers, are going to find out what he’s done.

A lesson to be learned. I suggest we need to be vigilant, stop communion in the hand, and put side-altars and/or statues of St. Michael in our churches.

Communion on the tongue won’t stop those who want to do this again or something similar. 🤷

But…excellent point about having one’s legacy chisled into the internet.

BTW, what’s a statue of St. Michael going to do to thwart this kind of situation?

I think he’s the guardian of the Church and certainly he’s the nemesis of the Devil.

I think they prayer to St. Michael is routinely said after the Latin Mass.

I would guess having him there would act as a deterrent; God’s bouncer, if you like, keeping the demons out of the church, and thus preventing crimes by the humans they influence.

Or just suggesting, subconsciously, to said humans, that they should behave themselves.

Even sorcerors know you have to formally kick the demons out of whatever place you’re doing a ritual in, to ‘cleanse’ it ritually, never mind what the laity might bring in with them.

So having a side altar to a robust Archangel like St. Michael would be a very good start.
