We went again this past Sunday and because we were late. I did see them but could not hear them. I am not going to bother Father Welsh at this time because he has his own problems being treated for Cancer, please pray for him!
Eric, if I were you I would have a friendly talk with the priest. I would mention that you have been hearing people saying the old responses loudly, and maybe it would be helpful for the people if the priest ‘reminded them’ before Mass to use their pew cards and to say the correct responses so that they could have an appropriate ‘full participation’ in the liturgy. (and to ‘remind’ them at each Mass for the next couple of months or so.)

If you keep hearing the people even after Father has reminded the congregation over and over, then you can either find out who they are and let Father tell them face to face and then if they keep on, they’re openly defying their priest and Father can take whatever steps he feels necessary. . .or if you can’t find out, you can still tell Father so that when he reminds the congregation, he can ALSO ask them to ‘say special prayers for those in our midst who despite being asked to join with all of us persist in trying to hold the liturgy hostage by using the ‘old’ prayers.’

Me too. But by the OP’s standards when I recite my mistakes at an level that most people can hear, I’m rebelling.
Wrong. They were not fumbling with the new translation. I can tell the difference. I do it myself. These people were being loud and obnoxious.

“And also with your spirit” is the friendly flag of good intentions overruling 40-year-old habit.

I go to the OF so infrequently that I do not know the new translation (and I have forgotten the old) so I have to follow along in the missalette or pew card. If neither are handy, then I whisper the responses to myself in Latin.

The story is told that J.R.R. Tolkien did not like the new Mass in the vernacular and so he loudly said the responses in Latin. Cantankerous old man 😃

So glad you know me and others so well.

When I was at mass this past weekend, I listened to the people around me. I heard “loud and obnoxious” old responses around me. But apparently I don’t know what I’m talking about.

was at [edited] in Norristown PA. at the 5:30pm mass yesterday. There was a woman with her husband a couple of rows back who kept reciting the old translation, being loud about it to the point it almost drowned out the people around me.

Does anyone else experience imature people like this?
Just happened across this thread and we have the exact same thing happening at our church. I will be interested to read and see suggestions as to how to handle this?

I think the OP has made it quite clear that they are doing this out of protest. He isn’t accusing anyone who messes up as doing it on purpose but rather just these people who are doing it obviously. We are not at his parish and I think it would be charitable to assume he can accurately discern what is going on for the purpose of this discussion. It just isn’t helpful if we spend post after post arguing over how these people could not possible be doing it on purpose.

There may be some who do not like the new translation. I love it.

But a few weeks ago an older woman came into my store and we got to talking about the new translation.

Why? Because it is so similar to the translation she grew up with before the inane translation that happened in the 70s.

She loves it. 🙂 It feels so familiar to her.

In fact, we have some children’s missals from the 50s which are very close to today’s translations.

It makes me nuts that it took so long when all anyone had to do was look at the English translation next to the Latin in the Mass.

I’m not the one that started arguing, if you go back and reread the posts. It seems to me more that the OP doesn’t want to think HE might be in the wrong.

He’s made it quite clear his view is obvious, doesn’t mean its accurate. I think its more charitable for everyone to give other parishoners the benefit of the doubt that there are STILL people struggling with the new responses and not to presume people are protesting just because they haven’t responded to the new translations on the same time line that others expect them to. Like I said, I paid more attention to my own parish this past Sunday and it was a mix of old and new translations and all were “loud and obnoxious” if saying it at a noise level that others can hear is any indication. Charitable is assuming its going to take a YEAR or so for others to actually get into the habit, not posting annoyance online that people can’t “get it” as quick as others.

I really don’t know what can be done with people like that. Try to remember that we are all diamonds in the rough with very sharp edges. We rub against each other bringing out the shine. Or you may have prayed for patience recently and God is giving a chance to exercise this virtue. Or you could offer it up. (Being a convert I find that expression has been a delight saying) Smile sweetly and offer it up.

Seriously though, there is very little you can do except run through all the cliches you can think of to find a way to cope.

I’m not seeing that at all. But for the sake of helping this chap out why don’t we say that IF it isn’t on purpose and it is happening as he describes what should he do. i propose he talk to them in an innocent manner so that maybe both parties can be educated about what is going on.

I wouldn’t try that. I think that these people are making it very clear that they understand what they are doing.

But, perhaps making friends with them and learning who they are and what their problems are may help diffuse the situation. I like the way St. Therese of Lixieux handled difficult people. She simpy sought them out and loved them. They did not necessarily return that love but she loved them anyway.

Often difficult people do respond to love and concern. A gentle sense of humor and friendliness over time may just be the ticket.

Gosh, if this is the biggest problem in the parish…Where is it?? I want to go there! I don’t think the priest should need to get involved on this level. Doesn’t this parish have bouncers…Er, I mean shushers…um…USHERS?! LOL

Well, I say they might not realize.

They could be like me, former C&E Catholics who decided to start going to church again. They might realize something is wrong, but keep saying the same thing as they think it’s correct.
I realized something was different… didn’t know what… Googled… Found CAF… asked questions… received awesome answers… bought a new Missal… and now I’m good 🙂

You never know… 😉
Welcome back home!

Someone suggested that way back on the first or second page, but the OP refuses to see the situation from any other point of view than his own.
