A US Roman Catholic church in south-western Louisiana has come up with a novel way of blessing its parish.

Rev Matthew Barzare of St Anne Church in the rural community of Cow Island took up the suggestion of a parishioner to spray 100 gallons (454 litres) of holy water from a plane.

His parish is spread over a wide area so Rev Barzare decided a crop dusting plane would be a quick solution.

I’m thinking Baltimore City could be in need of this! 336 homicides and counting. God help us!

I’ve suggested excising California from the Union at times . . .

But then, I also want a wall built . . . on Nevad’as western border . . . 😝 😜

As a guy in Louisiana that used to work for a crop dusting company, I don’t know why they did this. Also those planes hold way more than 100 gallons, so they didn’t even get it but like an ⅛ full.

The gimmicky nature of using a Sacramental as a public spectacle.

That is kind of my feeling as well. It is one thing for a Catholic farmer to get it sprayed over his own field, but not right over a general population. I would not feel right to have another’s religion forced on me that way either.

It’s a small town, based on its size and the location I would not be surprised if it was almost 100% Catholic. So disrespect to other religions seems like a strange criticism.
As to it’s appropriatness, it reads as if the diocese had approved it as they released a message about it quoted in one news article I read.

I think the criticisms on this forum are misplaced.

Well, to be fair…Almost still isn’t 100%…so even if there was only 1 person…

But also, the town is unincorporated so I’m guessing everyone knows everyone too.

Rural people tend to be rather pragmatic in my experience. A protestant in a rural town which was blessed with holy water would say something like “those silly Catholics being weird again” and shrug his shoulders and go back to work.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it only takes one…and I think that’s what @QwertyGirl is getting at…and to just assume everyone would be OK with it.

Like I said though…they’re unincorporated, so there’s a decent chance everyone in town knew what was going to happen.

Perhaps. But of course that doesn’t mean it isn’t a wrong thing to do. Forcing religion on others is always to be avoided.
