Eric Kandel does quote something from Ben Barres about how he was starting to feel suicidal before he decided to transition. I’ll transcribe what Barres said tomorrow, because it’s after midnight now where I live and I really should be getting to bed.

It may be causing great harm to human persons to assure them that gender is a choice and then confuse that option with a myriad of possible genders from the time they are 4 or 5 years old.
I would hope that medical treatments don’t come with advice that “gender is a choice”. Persons undergoing these treatments exchange one kind of disability for another and they do so (I hope) only because life is to difficult to bear as they were.
As I said, we are dealing with very young and possibly fragile human psyches here and we have no idea how formation or misinformation when very young can impact subsequent mental development.
I also cannot imagine what needs to be said to 4 and 5 year olds at large about this topic.
From what I’ve been reading about sex education programs in California, children are taught the difference between sex and gender identity
If “gender identity” really needs to be taught to children…, I hope this is taught as an aberration that affects some people.
Seriously though, having a child of four or five even think about or given the suggestion that they can choose their gender is ridiculous.
I agree. And I fail to see how this is relevant to the issue of surgeries for relief of extreme gender dysphoria.
haven’t seen any of the curricula that schools use, but I suspect that whatever they teach is geared towards concepts that a five year old can understand and grasp. People who have a lot of experience teaching children probably know how to do that. And if they live in California, their parents can opt them out if they want.
But I question why the topic warrants inclusion in school at a young age. And it’s not the teaching method that’s of relevance, but the subject/content.

I suspect that the emphasis is on “diversity,” not on what is “normal” and what the “aberrations” from normality are. The people who are the so-called “aberrations” probably don’t like to think of themselves as somehow deficient. If anything, they might even consider the thing that makes them not quite normal to be something that makes them kind of special. For example, I know that some people on the autism spectrum and others with related conditions like ADHD sometimes refer to “normal” people as being “neurotypical” whereas they themselves are “neurodivergent” or “neuroatypical.” They view themselves as different than others, but not necessarily deficient and they might even want to emphasize some of their qualities that give them unique and sometimes impressive abilities that “normal” people don’t have.

Given we are talking about a debilitating condition that drives people to horrendous surgeries so they can cope with living, I think we can conclude they suffer from something not normal and not of benefit.

As to what else might be on the gender curriculum for primary school - I can’t imagine…

But you’re skipping over my point. I don’t know if the case has been put in sufficiently clear & demonstrable terms that we are talking about people so desperate, living so miserably, that suicide is a real risk.
Suicide rate:

Don’t worry, it’s not contagious.

Diseased organs were removed.

I doubt the sex organs of these transgender individuals were diseased.
And as predicted, you brought up this argument.

But we can’t exactly amputate a brain can we? And so far no pharmacological treatment has been found effective, other than hormone replacement therapy.

In medicine, removing healthy organs is not unusual. Women with a genetic pre-disposition to breast and ovarian cancer regularly have healthy ovaries and breasts removed. AIS women have healthy testes removed for the same reason: internal testes are at risk of cancer. Healthy tissues are often removed in cancer surgery just as “insurance” that a wide enough margin around the cancer was removed to reduce the risk of re-occurrence.

One does not treat delusion by embracing a falsehood.
It’s not a delusion, nor a falsehood. Being delusional in fact eliminates a diagnosis of transgenderism. Have you actually read any of the medical literature on the subject, or the WPATH standards if care?

It’s not a delusion, nor a falsehood.
If all available evidence indicates one thing, but the person continues to believe something opposite of that, it is delusion.

It is a falsehood to mutilate the body to maintain the delusion. One has not changed a male to a female or vice versa, they are simply simulating such a change.

« Delusion » has a precise medical meaning. Hint: delusional people are largely unable to function socially. They are psychotic.

The transgendered are nowhere near this. My daughter is completely functional and is an Masters student in the physical sciences.

Honestly if we’re to debate, please learn the facts first!

Yes, it does have a precise meaning.
And it appears to fit precisely.

I do not know if what you are claiming about most delusional people is true, but if so, then I suppose we could say the transgender group may be the more fortunate of the group…for they are not psychotic, they are merely delusional.

Well at least you recognize where the real problem resides.

One does not treat delusion by embracing a falsehood.
Didn’t you read what Rau said? I thought he gave a good explanation of why transgender people are not delusional: “Our sense of our own ‘gender’ is a real thing I think and it seems as though it can be out of step with bodily reality.” Both a person’s internal sense of their gender (i.e. their ‘gender identity’) and their outward body are real and separate things which are in conflict. Transgender people are perfectly aware of what their body looks like and aren’t imagining that it looks any differently than what it does.

All evidence says they are male or female.
They insist that the evidence is wrong.
This insistence is so strong that they will spend years trying to force the physical reality to match their false belief.

I still maintain the answer is not mutilation and distortion.

So what proven treatment would you propose besides being miserable for the rest of their lives?

There are examples of people who are not strictly “male or female.” In the case of a person with complete AIS, they look physically female from birth, have a brain which is undoubtedly wired as female because it develops like the rest of their body under the influence of estrogen and not testosterone. And yet their chromosomes are male, i.e. they’re XY. So which physical reality is the correct one? Is it their outward body which looks female or is it their chromosomes which are male? In this case, there is a misalignment between two physical realities.

What you are describing is an actual physical disease. Not a delusion.
In a delusion, all of the physical evidence is contrary to the belief.
In the instance you describe, there is a physical problem that explains the physical disparity.

The issue causing the disparity would have to be addressed. Our medical science may not be up to that task as yet.

Again, you have a mistaken notion of what delusion is. Get informed!
So, we know it wrong, but feel we have to do something …even if it is wrong.
You think it wrong. Others more learned on the subject disagree.

So your « treatment » is to do nothing.

Sorry but that would be unethical, knowing that treatment, as imperfect as it is, can save lives.

I think I’ve said all I have to say. It’s impossible to dialogue with someone who doesn’t or will not understand the medical meaning of things like « delusional » or who cannot consider the possibility that a physical difference in the brain is involved, in spite of the research pointing in that direction.

Fortunately you’re not in charge of transgender care.

Over and out.
