We might if schools had the impression that an unusual number of females/nerds/etc. were killing themselves due to bullying. Factual or not, the public impression is that gay kids are being picked on in school more than other groups, and so some schools see it as a school problem.
The inability of liberal arts domains to produce
a useful social product in anything like the amounts generated by the study of nature * has caused the humanities and social “sciences” to seek them instead through affiliation with what they believe to be deserving [political] movements and causes [namely, feminism and homosexuality], each in need of intellectual justification and defense. If the much sought-after “diversity” were indeed “our strength”, it would need no such defense or support; the people would “embrace” it without being coerced. This coercion is facilitated by the expansion of victimhood. A good example is the campus rape myth. The campus rape industry’s central tenet is that one-quarter of all college girls will be raped or be the targets of attempted rape by the end of their college years. The actual study that led to this conclusion produced disappointing results, so the definition of rape had to be change to,
you guessed it!, increase the incidence of “rape”. One case recently reached the absurd when the local authorities not only dropped the charges but issued an arrest warrant for the false accuser. Never mind the facts of the case, the alleged perpetrator was guilty
ipso facto, so he was expelled by his school. All this is to address a non-problem so the federal dollars can continue to flow to a bloated and expanding bureaucracy.
In a like manner, homosexual victimhood had to be magnified by calling natural opposition to its worship a hate crime. Like the case of the black man who was dragged to death by white bigots produced a nation of Klansmen, the number of cases of actual suffering by homosexuals had to expanded beyond the number of atoms in the known universe to make the facts fit liberal ideology.
The courts, which take their cues directly from academia, issue decisions extending marital rights to homosexual unions on no other basis or authority than the fact that full societal acceptance, if not endorsement, of homosexuality is the current cause célèbre in today’s educational establishment. This inevitably found its way down to K-12. Nobody wants to risk being ostracized and called names, so they are cowed into submission and made to parrot what they know is a lie, not exactly the purpose for which education was established, but something eerily out of George Orwell.*
