Super-liberal relatives visiting over Easter

Thanks everyone for your ideas! I talked to my husband, and he feels there is no way we can put them off. I think the key is to set boundaries, not discuss politics, and let them know ahead of time that we will be attending liturgies basically every day they are here.
I appreciate all your help - - I have made it through before, and I will again. Part of the difficulty is that I am more religious now than I was even a few years ago, and so I don’t think they get how religiously devout my family and I are now.
Thanks again everyone!

Hi all,
I am stressing out about some relatives that are coming to visit us for about 4 days over Easter weekend. They are anti-Catholic, super in favor of SSM, one relative harangued my husband about how awful Arizona is, and how bigoted and backwards Arizona’s attempted legislation is, etc.
They have given books to my kids that I consider to be unacceptable, and they are very permissive about what the media they allow their daughters to watch / listen to (Sex and the city movie, etc for 10 and 13 year olds). They have tried to pressure us to send our older daughter to go spend 3 weeks with them over the summer for a specialized academic camp.
They mainly come to visit us so that the cousins can spend time together, and know each other. I agree that’s a worthwhile goal. They come visit us at Easter because they get Good Friday and Easter Monday off, so it’s easy for them to visit, without having to take extra vacation days.
Help - it also makes it awkward for us to go to Good Friday liturgy, etc. because the relatives just think it’s another day off. We have taken the kids to Easter morning Mass is the past, just to hear the mom lecture her daughters about how awful the Catholic Church is (in another room). I’m just dreading this - - any advice?
Hi - Just remember a few things…

We should remember that we are all sinners in need of His Mercy and Grace, they may just be “bigger” sinners than you. Also remember that Jesus also dined and mingled with the sinners so we should too. God places these people in your path for 1 purpose: Evangelize and help to lead them to Christ and His Church, the fullness of His Grace and Truth.

This is a great tool in helping to bring our family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and strangers on the street to develop a relationship with Jesus:

Well, I would send their children books and cd’s (Lighthouse Catholic Media is a good one) and why not order something today for them and their children from Lighthouse Catholic Media and give it to them for Easter! As far as inviting them to join you for Mass - if they are behaving that badly, I would just tell them in front of their children that they are of course welcome to join you but if they feel that awful about celebrating God’s gift: Jesus than they could cook breakfast for you all while your at Mass with your family. I wouldn’t pressure them to join you and in fact, let them be the ones to say they want to come with you since it sounds like you always invite them - maybe don’t this year. Perhaps they will have a burning desire deep within their hearts to be present at Mass.

Above all else, pray for the Holy Spirit to move in them to repentance and conversion to soften their hearts in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
Good luck - praying for them and you to have strength to endure.

I have had the same situation myself and since then we never allow relatives to visit easter as we want to give this special time our full attention. Relatives can visit other times.

27lw,

Do you want these relatives to visit you at all? Do you want them to visit, but for a shorter period of time? What about your husband?

I somewhat disagree with those who say to tell them that Easter isn’t a good time.

It’s the BEST time.

This may be the SOLE exposure to the Church and Jesus Christ that those cousins get. For their sake, put up with the parents.

It sounds like the kids like “church.” That’s great! And it sounds like the kids like staying at your house. Perhaps this is because you demonstrate the love of Christ to them, even though you are stressed out by the visit at a busy time. I’m guessing those kids wish that their parents were “nice like Aunt and Uncle.”

It may well be that the parents feel guilty because they never take their kids to church or teach them about God, and they take them to your house in the hopes that some of the “religion” will wear off. Their protests and arguments may just be their guilt rising to the surface, and they feel it necessary to challenge you so that they can keep convincing themselves that they are right and you are wrong.

But their kids will know the truth by the LOVE that you show. So don’t turn them away during the time when they will be exposed to a great deal of Catholic true life and teaching. Let them see for themselves that Easter is more than the Easter bunny.

I fear that if you turn them away at Easter, the parents will use it as an excuse to tell their children, “See, they’re hypocrites just like all the other religious people. They pretend to love you, but when you put them out a little, they show their true colors.”

And the kids will be so disappointed at not seeing their cousins and spending the long weekend with Aunt and Uncle that they will become disillusioned with religion, too, and end up just like their skeptical parents.

It isn’t easy being a witness of Christ. Don’t take the easy way out of this one. Sure, you can hide away in your peaceful home and church on Easter. Or you can go down into the trenches of disbelief and actually live out your faith to your difficult relatives. Remember James 5: 19 & 20!

Sounds like the liberal parents are just as concerned about your influence over their children as vice versa.
So this comment is suggesting what? That it’s okay for a 10 and 13 yo to watch shows like Sex in the City because it’s some kind of cultural value?

It’s your house, right? So. . .before they come, I’d have a talk with them. "We love to have the cousins get together. I think it’s important that they get to know each other and to accept each other’s differences as well as similarities respectfully. Now, you and I have some very different ideas about how we want to raise our children, and while we don’t always agree with each other about certain issues, we want to make sure that we don’t hit ‘hot button topics’ or that we THINK we’re being ‘fine’ with something because we aren’t actively saying "Gee, your ideas really stink’ but we say something ‘humorous’ like, "Hey, your girls are refugees from "little house on the prairie, they should join the 21st century.’. . .

SO. …because we want this to be the best visit for everybody, I want to be upfront. I don’t expect you to ‘join in’ with something we do if it’s not ‘your thing’, but in ourhouse, Lent, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter are a big deal. We like going to Mass, even if we ‘don’t have to’ on Good Friday. We’re Catholic and we make no apologies. We believe in the teachings. You obviously ‘don’t have to believe’ but remember, 'if you can’t say something NICE about someone/something, don’t say anything at all.**** If you think our Church is stupid and our teachings repulsive, you’re entitled to THINK it, but this is our home and our faith and you are NOT entitled to ‘share’ your OPINION with us. We won’t shove our faith down your throat, you don’t shove your ‘disagreement’ down ours.

Now, if you really absolutely cannot grace us with your presence without letting us know how terrible our Church is and how stupid we are to believe, then do us all a favor and stay home. Let the cousins Skype, let them write letters, let them text each other for hours, and hopefully when they are old enough to visit each other without the ‘parents’, they’ll be mature enough and courteous enough to accept each other. Certainly they’ll stand a better chance if they aren’t witnessing their so-called ‘elders’ acting like rude entitlement kings and queens demanding that their every word be treated like diamonds while they spew venom.

There, aren’t you glad we’re getting this out of the way so that we’ll all feel better??"

Is the relationship with their cousins more important than your kids’ well-being? We had friends and relatives who didn’t respect our values or boundaries. They insisted on things like showing our daughters rated R movies, trying to provide porn to our son and badmouthing our faith and our values to our kids. Like your situation, one couple campaigned to get us to send our girls to spend a week with them. This was after they’d showed them a movie we specifically said they couldn’t watch, then promised the girls they’d be allowed to watch any R-rated movie they wanted while they stayed with them (our girls were 6-7 at the time). We decided that the time our children got to spend with their kids wasn’t worth the hassles. Just remember that your first responsibility is to your kids and not these relatives.

That’s easy–your house, your opinion is the only one that matters. They want to bash the Church, they can’t do it under your roof. Their opinion doesn’t count. If they don’t like it, they are not welcome. Case closed.

Another thing I will say: Liberals are supposed to be tolerant and open-minded. In reality, they are the most close minded and tyrannical people you will ever come across. They don’t get along at all with people who think differently than them. Why should you do the same on the biggest feast day of all Christendom? I would say that it is a busy time for you and not good for them to visit. Since they hate the Church so much, it shouldn’t even bother them.

If one is a straight white Catholic-Christian conservative male, that is the case for MANY of them!
They don’t get along at all with people who think differently than them.
Unless you’re a Muslim, but it’s really more that they fear Islam. :hmmm:

Put a photo of Ronald Reagan on your fridge, order a Cruz or Paul bumper sticker for your car, and maybe a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag. Good conversation pieces! 👍 Rob

All good points. THey should ttend several services during the weekend, and invite family along. 😉

Really? We don’t get along at all with people who disagree with us? That’s not been my experience. I have many friends and relatives with different beliefs and values than mine.

Actually, your post makes it sound as though you are the one with anger and resentment towards those you disagree with.

Generally, no. The ones who are always trying to silence others are from the left side of the spectrum, not the right. Did you ever see conservatives trying to ban others from marching in a gay pride parade? The speech codes that many college campuses have–are those speech codes devised and put into place by liberals or conservatives? And…who do they apply to?

It may not be your experience, but you are using yourself as an example. You may not be that way, but that is more the exception than the rule. We have an online Facebook page for parents in our neighborhood. The moderators are four liberal women…you should see how fast people are removed for having a different point of view. Conservatives typically don’t do this. This is either done intentionally…or, the left hands don’t know what the far left hands are doing.
