Think about it Julianna…How can you tell if a person is gay?
They’re attracted to members of the same sex. It isn’t something outwardly obvious. Religion is something that is often hard to determine based on appearance alone. You wouldn’t argue that all Catholics have to dress like the Pope.

Why in the world do you assume gays wear frilly tu-tus and bright colors? There are four gay couples in my neighborhood. …been here for decades. They work…pay taxes and keep their property up and I have yet to see any one of them cutting their lawn in a bright color tu-tu.

Some flaunt it with clothes or behavior and others are very discreet & you couldn’t tell.

If the individual is to be supreme, arguably it would be better not to form a civic society at all.

The premise behind civic society is that individuals are not supreme.
Super late reply.

Isn’t the liberal argument that a government must exist in order to protect individual liberty, though? That is, the whole purpose of the state is to ensure that individuals are free and to stop them from harming each other. While individuals would certainly be free in a society that lacks any kind of state, there would be nothing to prevent people from harming each other and infringing on each other’s liberty. That’s why a state should exist. Under this idea of the state there really is no reason they shouldn’t legalise gay marriage.

I believe that if the Catholic hierarchy and other advocates of traditional marriage had expressed a willingness for a separation between civil and religious marriage, we may not be seeing this current situation.

I, personally have no problem with same-sex civil unions and I wish that that was the situation we found ourselves in now.
I share your view of civil unions, but you must understand, gay advocates were never, EVER going to accept them. “Ha, separate but equal, no way!” was their refrain.

What they were seeking was not benefits , but total acceptance as NORMAL. They are deluded enough to believe gay marriage and forcing school children to learn about two daddies and two mommies makes them normal.

Yes, I agree. For me the marriage part is what causes the most disruption for the rest of us - in terms of laws about equality affecting churches and invdividuals, etc., adoption of kids, etc. Gay marriage takes the molehill of civil unions and turns it into a mountain.

But the last day or so, I’ve thought about this scenario: this gay rights victory was brought on by the courts, no? Remember when we had busing and affirmative action. That so soured black/white relations, my God. Government enforced equality. We are free of that now. To me this feels a lot like affirmative action - more than any sort of civil rights victory. I mean Catholics always did respect the dignity of gays; it’s mandatory in our faith, right. My point is that affirmative action did more harm to blacks than whites. It was embarrassing as much as anything. Forced “acceptance” just doesn’t work. :o And we are about to learn that sad little lesson again. I anticipate a pretty quick deflation of spirits on this one - ironically on both sides as we play out our new roles.
Although your point is well-taken, what amazes me is how much both secular and religious Americans have embraced the whole gay/transgender rights thing, and have celebrated this ruling.

I expected Americans to be a bit more rebellious and robust, and push back very hard. The resistance has been lukewarm, and may sputter out altogether…

I played in the orchestra for shows. There were quite a few of the actors who were gay. A couple were not at all obvious but there were some who were… “screamers”!

I just saw a Bill O’Reilly clip on the internet opining that Religions have some protection because Justice Kennedy, in his majority opinion, stated that religions were clearly protected by the Constitution. He did aver that the Catholic Church would be forced out of the adoption service and that it was only a matter of time until another Bader-Ginsburg, Sotomayor, Kagan et al was appointed and then the whole protection would come crashing down. He spoke at some length how his producers had tried to get an official interview with a Catholic Cardinal or Bishop to no avail, which is sad but not unexpected.

This blog entry by Fr. Dwight Longenecker is a worthwhile read, in my opinion.

"Twelve Things to Remember if the SCOTUS Decision Upsets You

The Supreme Court decision allowing gay “marriage” in the United States has upset all right minded Christians, and rightly so.

It is pretty clear that the Supreme Court has rubber stamped a widespread rejection of Christian morality by a large segment of the American people."…

I don’t assume gays wear frilly tu-tus and bright colors. They do. I have seen them in parades and demonstrations outside my Church. Maybe SOME do not.

I do not know any gay people. I had only one gay friend and he died of AIDS. There are no same sex couples living in my neighborhood. I could, however, be dealing with gay people in my business everyday. But unless they are wearing their tu-tus I can’t tell if they are gay or not.

I thought the comments of kids interviewed on the issue were interesting.

There are non-gay cross dresserd. Let’s not forget the transgendered community (there exists heterosexual transgendered people).
It looks like the children are going to change our world. Only one kid thought gay marriage was wrong!
I would have told them …if Adam & Eve were gay, there would be no human race, so perhaps that’s why the Bible is against homosexuality.

So why would you care? I don’t. …do your job…pay your taxes…keep your property up…be a good citizen…and when you climb into bed at night…it is none of my business who is lying next to you. I know the men in my neighborhood are gay because when introduced…he said…“i’m Ted and this is my partner Jim…we live two houses down”. And that was that. They bought Girl Scour cookies from my daughter when she was in Girl Scouts.

Of course…a small percentage of the population with a weird behavior and that makes it acceptable. Why not include pedophiles?

If they were non-Catholic I would not give a rat’s patooty (God forgive me). But if they were Catholic I would care and make it my business because their immortal souls are in danger.

Just a point of order, but shouldn’t we care for all immortal souls on this planet, whether or not they happen to belong to someone who is Catholic? Obviously, in these instances prayer is the first and foremost thing needed, as their hearts are most likely not in the proper frame of mind to receive any fraternal correction that is needed. So, it’s good to pray for them, that God may open their hearts to his amazing and transformative power in their lives. It is also good (and necessary) that we pray for ourselves in these instances, that we may discern the proper time and place for words of encouragement - that there is strength to be found in God helping us to recognize our sins and turn away from them.
