So is Mr Burton’s co-star in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, Cheryl Gates McFadden!

Terry

PS I loved Burton’s portrayal of the young Kunta Kinte in Alex Haley’s “Roots”(now out on DVD)!

I’m not going through every page of this thread, but after watching Life On the Rock tonight, coach Nick Saban at Alabama is Catholic and Mass is celebrated before every game.

As I read the comments in this post, I cannot help but recall Matthew 7:3…

“Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the great log in your own?”

Only God can determine who is and who is not a “devout” Catholic. For us to speculate on someone’s devotion is to deteriorate into mean-spirited gossip. As Catholics, we should be better than that.
Well we ain’t condemning their soul to hell or think they’re evil people. I think it’s fair to judge, and I don’t think anyone is dismissing their body of work - just questioning their devotion to the faith. I know one actress who “is” a Catholic, due to her family being Catholic, and she herself admitted via article that she doesn’t know if she believes in God, but she thinks we have souls and our energy “goes somewhere.” Maybe she’s covering her faith up due to her profession and is just being neutral. If not, basically she’s an agnostic; she could be simply non-religious; or “spiritual” when asked about souls. In my book she isn’t Catholic, and if I was being nice she’s a nominal Catholic or at best a cultural Catholic if she attends mass if her parents make her.

Then again, the subject title is “was Catholic” so I guess that entails anyone who was baptized regardless if they’re practicing, nominal or has strayed away.
This is definitely a celebrity-obsessed society
True. It’s a bizarre reality. I find more admiration, not worship or me salivating over, to the more technical position behind the camera: director, cinematographer, editor, producer, make up & hair artists, special effects, costume and production designers, gaffer, key grip etc. Actors are important, and casting the right actors with skill is 50% of making a good film, but the other 50% is hugely ignored and due to MSM and hype – actors are given way too much credit for what they do.

Unsure of whether it was posted or not… but, Alfie Boe is a very devout Catholic.

Those who don’t know Alfie, he’s an opera star from the UK. He was brought up in a very devout family. His most notable act was playing Jean Val Jean in Les Miserables, the 25th Anniversary at the O2. Which he did an amazing job.

Here is a wonderful BBC interview with Alfie about his life. A good chunk is dedicated to his life with Catholicism. Especially with his sister, who you can tell is even a little more devout than Alfie.

I’ve definitely heard of a lot of people being RAISED Catholic, but not many in the celebrity world who are still practicing. I hadn’t heard that Chris Cornell of Soundgarden was a practicing Catholic … only that he was as a child … and then his parents’ divorced … (that is often the beginning of the end of the Catholic faith for many, many people).

Prince Michael of Kent (Queen Elizabeth’s cousin) converted to Roman Catholicism in order to marry his wife, Princess Michael of Kent. Both are devout Catholics and Prince Michael was taken out of the Line of Succession to the British throne because of his conversion to Catholicism.

Jimmy Fallon and his wife are both Catholics.

John Wells - head writer and exec producer of ER and The West Wing

Tom Fontana - head writer and exec producer of Homicide: Life on the Street and Oz.

I could list a large number of people who are Catholic who work in the entertainment industry who are writers, directors, producers and studio executives. I’ve worked in the film and TV industry since I was 20.

If I remember correctly, Tom Hanks converted to Greek Orthodoxy to marry Rita Wilson, whose family had been forced to convert to Islam when the Turks invaded parts of Greece and then returned to Greek Orthodoxy when they came to the U.S. and, in Greece, reclaimed their Orthodox faith when the Turks had been forced out of Greece

Mariska Hargitay was raised Catholic. She graduated from an all girl school, Marymount High School.

Sorry, I don’t know the answer to this. I believe she was married in a church, but I don’t think it was a Catholic church.

I was sitting here, with not a lot to do, so I decided to pull out all the names that have been mentioned in the past posts. I suspect that I may have missed some.

You can also google = famous catholics and find rather extensive lists… we are all suspect but comforting nonetheless…

I want to believe there is an awakening and/or re-awakening of the Spirit… I’ve never seen so many Rosaries hanging from rear view mirrors… maybe I just notice it more since mine has been put out there…

The writer Anthony Boucher, whose famous famous work is “The Quest For Saint Aquin”. 🙂

I have his autobiography, and Dwayne Hickman (“Dobie Gillis”) was at one time a very devout Catholic. Went to Catholic schools all life, at one point even considered becoming a Priest, and co-star (and later Gilligan star) Bob Denver went to Loyola University with him (however, it wasn’t mentioned if Denver was actually Catholic or not. Did Loyola accept Non-Catholics?). Furthermore, the guy that played Dobie’s father on the series, Frank Faylen, was also Catholic, and was attending the same Church as Hickman before they even worked together on Dobie!

I don’t know much about Faylen or Denver beyond that, but in his book, Hickman says that he got into some kind of meditation (exactly what kind is escaping me at the moment), and eventually, unfortunately, left the Church, although he stated he had no bad feelings towards it.

W better hurry up.

Sports talk show host/comic actor Jay Mohr is a catholic convert.

I don’t know if I have read every post but in the sports I think that the Harbaughs (Jim and John coachesof SF and Baltimore) are Catholic. I thought I remembered from WAY back and I couldn’t find anything about it for Jim but Wikepedia said that John was a life long Catholic married to a Lutheran.
