I haven’t read through every post on this thread, so I don’t know if it was mentioned that David Caruso (CSI Miami) is (not necessarily practicing) Catholic. Also Bobby Flay (Food Network) which he mentioned when he challenged Fr. Patalinghug in his show called Showdown with Bobby Flay.

Again, I apologize if these examples were already mentioned.
I have not seen this Throwdown With Bobby Flay episode… I’ve seen most of them and I also listen to Entertaining Truth with Fr. Leo and Tom Leopold (comedy writer who is a convert from Judaism).

What type of food was the Throwdown for???

For college football fans who didn’t know, Bo & Carl Pelini are Catholic, as well as the Stoops brothers (Bob, Mike, & Mark).
and unfortunately Bobby Petrino, who attended the same Catholic college that I went to.

Andre Bazin, French film theorist.
David Jones, Welsh poet who developed a theory of art based on the Eucharist.

I’m not really surprised that Cesar Chavez was Catholic, but I just ran across this picture of him receiving Communion during a hunger strike at the Santa Rita Center, June 4th, 1972, 1017 E. Hadley,in Phoenix in 1972:

I went to the same Jesuit High School as Bing Crosby… and former Speaker of the House Tom Foley… and John Stockton (star forward of the Utah Jazz)… and Julia Sweeney (“It’s Just Pat” from Saturday Night Live). All Catholics.
Julia Sweeney is no longer a Catholic. In her solo stage show, “Letting Go of God”, she boasts of how she rejected her faith and embraced atheism.

Chavez was always one of the more religious figures in the Chicano movement. People like Huerta, on the other hand… let’s just say she shares the Catholicism of Speaker Perez.

Whilst we’re on the subject of Cesar Chavez( presumably no relation to the late Venezuelan populist President!), it is worth nting that not only was he a friend of Bobby Kennedy but was also supported by Dorothy Day who is under consideration for beatification and canonization by the Vatican!

Terry

Marshall McLuhan, media theorist.
Hugh Kenner, student of the above and literary critic. Both converts.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but I just found out that Darren Burrows (Ed Chigliak on “Northern Exposure”) is a Catholic. My sil sent me his fan page and I just saw for Easter he put up this picture

and wrote
“Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat”

and then for Christmas, wrote this:

“Wow, December already?!? Whoa! o.0 -For me Sunday began Advent (derived from Latin word adventus, meaning “coming.”) and the new Liturgical year in my Roman Catholic world, traditionally (and I’m nothing if not traditional 😉 a time of fasting and joyful penance, of expectant waiting and preparation culminating Dec. 25th in the of the Nativity of the Christ and the celebration and feasting of the 12 days of Christmas ^^ …weird how I never seem to be that hungry 'til I’m fasting o.0”

I was just surprised when I saw this as I was not expecting his page to have any religious information.

I was surprised to find that Kobe Bryant is Catholic and attends Mass.

He lives a life of ugly, vehement sin. You know, playing for the Lakers and all 😃
It gets worse (i.e. better) Steve Nash and Pau Gasol are Catholic too. 😉

Surprised that Sir Alec Guinness was too. He seems so English (hence Protestant) but maybe the Guinness name should have steered me onto this.

He was a convert. While playing G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown in “The Detective,” a little boy who saw him in clerical garb thought he was a real priest, and he was so delighted to see “Father” Guinness that Guinness began to wonder what it was about the priesthood that could inspire such wonder. He began to explore the Faith and he and his wife both converted. If you read his memoirs, he was a very devoted Catholic and mass attendee and frequently wrote of the powerful experience of receiving the Eucharist.

That is so nice to know. I’ve always like him in his movies.

I was surprised to learn that Jim Bowie was a Catholic convert. He converted to receive Mexican citizenship and to marry his wife Ursula, a Catholic. Bowie was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith in San Antonio on April 28, 1828, sponsored by the alcalde (chief administrator) of the town, Juan Martin de Veramendi, and the wife of the administrator, Josefa Navarro. He may not have always led the most Christian lifestyle, but he was one of ours.

Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes were both raised Catholic but then married Tom Cruise. Both divorced Cruise after refusing to allow their children to be raised Scientologist. And both returned to the Church.

Alec Baldwin often serves as lector at his parish.

Mark Wahlberg goes to church every day and carries a prayer book and dictionary when he’s away from home. When asked about the last word he looked up in the dictionary he said, “consubstantial.”

Award-winning Science Fiction Author Jerry Pournelle (THE MOTE IN GOD’S EYE, LUCIFER’S HAMMER, INFERNO) describes himself as a “devout and practicing Catholic.”
