Susan Sarandon Under Fire for Calling Pope Benedict a Nazi

Actress Susan Sarandon called German pontiff Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi during a discussion session at the Hamptons Film Festival over the weekend.

Sarandon, who won an Academy Award for her role in the 1995 anti-death penalty film "Dead Man Walking,” said she had sent a copy of the book on which the movie is based to the Pope.

“The last one. Not this Nazi one we have now,” she reportedly told Newsday, and later repeated at the Ciroc vodka-sponsored panel.

The story goes on to say nobody “seemed bothered” by the remark.

Pope has always had to fight this rap ever since people found out that he was part of the Hitler Youth. It is unfortunate that people dont realize that membership was compulsory when he was a child.

According to the article, her audience didn’t seem bothered, but the Catholic League and the Jewish Anti-Defamation League are calling on her to apologize.

What i always find funny about the hate for the current pope is that the same people seem to think the last pope was way better.

But the last pope made the current one head of the congregationd for the doctrine of faith (or by a lo earlier name head inquisitor). He would not have done so, if they had been vast theological differences between them. So anyone expressing hartred for Benedikt XVI but likes John Paul II demonstrates lack of knowledge about church.

Christianity is under attack in this country. The people who are upset are Catholics and Jews. Calling Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi trivializes the horror that real Nazi’s inflicted on both Jews and Catholics in the 1940’s. My uncle, a Catholic priest in France, “disapppeared” during the war. After the liberation, he was found wandering in the streets of his home town, a bag of skin and bones.

So you are ok with the fact that she called our Pope a “nazi”? I’m sorry, but there is no way to make that right in my mind no matter how you try to justify it. The fact that she couldn’t even remember JPII’s name, the actual Pope she sent the book to since it was so important for her to do so, says more than enough about her intent and her opinions.

If you can’t remember someone’s name, you don’t use the most derogatory thing you can think of… unless you mean it as an attack.

She showed up at the Wall St. protest and no one knew her, went on a Leno or another where she displayed her new tat going down her back, was the first cougar now “separated”. So many people on this forum balk at all the “politically correct” tip-toe talk…but here, she may have just let that word slip because she is aware of his ties to the Hitler Youth and was reaching to identify him…that’s what it sounds like.

How would you feel if somebody called you a Nazi? Words like that don’t “slip.”

Catholics, other Christians, and Jews need to start making our opinions known by NOT patronizing the products of people like this. We might not be famous individually with public platforms to announce what we believe, but we can make a difference as a group. The same goes for our voting power.

I’m pretty sure I would be upset if it was ANYONE that had a microphone in front of their face at a media event and said the same thing as Sarandon did. It wasn’t a private cocktail party.

Yes, Pope Benedict was part of the “Hitler Youth” – as was every other German boy. Unlike many others, however, he deserted at the first available opportunity.

When stuff like this happens, it always makes me think of Mel Gibson. I mean, Sarandon says this disparaging remark while in full possession of her faculties. The interviewer was even a bit taken aback and tried to give her an opportunity to back pedal, but she only reasserted the slanderous claim. And yet, in two weeks, no one will remember or care. Contrast that with Mel Gibson who is still the object of ridicule for the things he said years ago while intoxicated.

I’m not trying to justify Gibson’s behavior. Not at all. There’s no excuse for such behavior. I just find it odd that those in Hollywood are so eager to forgive slanderous statements when they probably largely agree with them than they are to forgive those with whom they disagree. I mean, I can’t see anyone in Hollywood “shunning” Sarandon because of this.

BTW, I’ve only seen this on Fox, nobody else is running this story. She should be roundly condemned by the media for her bigotry. But that won’t happen.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented on this today:

Susan Sarandon’s ignorance is willful: those who have hatred in their veins are not interested in the truth. The fact is that Joseph Ratzinger (the pope) was conscripted at the age of 14 into the Hitler Youth, along with every other young German boy. Unlike most of the other teenagers, Ratzinger refused to go to meetings, bringing economic hardship to his family. Moreover, unlike most of the others, he deserted at the first opportunity.

When he was elected pope in 2005, Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, said it was “rubbish” to maintain that Ratzinger chose to belong to the Hitler Youth. He not only spoke kindly about the new pope, he added, “enrollment was compulsory.”

Sarandon’s comment is obscene. Sadly, it’s what we’ve come to expect from her.
