She’s an idiot, just like all the other liberals she hangs out with.

Why give her all this attention, anyway?
She’s an idiot and a bigot, yes. And, doesn’t deserve any attention. But, why do you as a conservative find it mandatory to indict all other liberals as well with a broad brush. I post on this board and don’t insult conservatives just because some say stupid or ignorant things!

We need to know what we are up against. Do you think she is the only celebrity who thinks this way?

BTW, I’ve only seen this on Fox, nobody else is running this story. She should be roundly condemned by the media for her bigotry. But that won’t happen.
No, it won’t because it doesn’t rise to the level of full treatment by the media. A stupid, bigoted has-been actress in her 60s trying to make news is how I see it. Stupidity is an equal opportunity employer for the left and right.

Ms. Sarandon has shown what she thinks of our Pope and I’ll make sure to show what I think by not going to any of her movies.
Catholics, other Christians, and Jews need to start making our opinions known by NOT patronizing the products of people like this. We might not be famous individually with public platforms to announce what we believe, but we can make a difference as a group. The same goes for our voting power.
Boycotts NEVER work; they only give people like her more media attention and more visibility. BTW, they’re not HER movies. There are dozens of people employed in the production of any film; they didn’t repeat her remarks.

I rarely boycott because I usually can’t remember who all the offensive parties are, there are so many. But if people actually do boycott her movies (if she has any) and if those who produce the movie realize a lot of people are going to boycott, then she might become an undesirable commodity to them in the first place.

Personally, I rarely go to movies, but I certainly won’t be going to any she’s in. Might not matter much, but it’s something I can do.

The woman intended to slam the Pope. No question about it. It was totally unfair of her except perhaps to the extent she thinks his morality inhibits the ā€œfreedomā€ of some. But in truth, all she had to do was ignore him. What’s it to her if he teaches against sinful behavior? Nothing, really. She can sin all she wants to and he can’t stop her. She said it because she wanted to cast him in an evil image to others because of his beliefs. She just plain hates him and what he stands for.

Yeah, I’ll boycott her, for whatever it’s worth.

Personally, I rarely go to movies,
I rarely go to the movies either. Susan Sarandon isn’t much different than the rest of Hollywood.

Sean Penn got so much attention for his helping the Haitians after the earthquake. The only other charity that got as much attention is that Baptist missionary who tried to adopt out kids.

WYD got barely a mention, but the OW’s are on the news constantly. Which event was bigger?

Definitely biased against religion.

OWs?? One-Worlders?

So let me get this straight: An actress who won an Academy Award for potraying a vowed, Catholic religious sister, sent a copy of the book written by the Catholic religious sister to an undeniably pro-life, Pope, then smears another, equally pro-life Pope as a ā€œNaziā€?

I feel dumber just thinking about it.

Susan Sarandon is a fantastic actress. I cannot stand when people denigrate women based on their age. So what if she is 60-something? Does anyone else smear Harrison Ford, and all those older male actors?

A man can be decrepit and falling apart and he is paired with younger women as love interests.

Rant over.

The fact that she referred to a Pope as a Nazi is disgusting and shows her lack of respect for Catholics.

Sorry, agree with LIVENLRN on this one. I boycott movies, etc. too. I refuse to make people richer or enable them to use my money to further their cause or causes. The list is getting longer and I’ve taken up mah jong.

Flip side is to attend those few movies that do tout Catholic values. THE WAY opens this Friday. It is about a man who makes the pilgrimage of St. James across the northern part of Spain. Stars Martin Sheen and directed by his son, Emilio Estervez.

Let’s clarify a point.

The word ā€œNaziā€ is an Anglicized abbreviation for Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, the German National Socialist German Workers’ Party, . Contrary to popular belief, the word Nazi is not synonymous with German WWII soldiers. Nazis were members of a political party. George S. Patton once (correctly) remarked (but was strongly criticized ) that Germans join the Nazi party like Americans join the Democrat or Republican party.

Now many German soldiers in WWII may have belonged to the Nazi party, but the notion of all German soldiers being Nazis is akin to saying all American soldiers are Democrats because the Democratic party is currently in power.

Sarandon is in a profession and in a culture known to glorify younger women. That’s a fact. The general media repeats whatever these people say and do as if they were the authorities on all things. Sarandon is a good actress. She likes attention and she likes to shock. Say or do something shocking gets an actor attention. I’d like to think she has matured to meet her chronological age. I don’t think she has.

As an aside, Sarandon is Catholic and majored in drama at Catholic University where she married Michael Sarandon in the 60s at a Catholic ceremony.

qui est ce;8478083] Christianity is under attack in this country. The people who are upset are Catholics and Jews. Calling Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi trivializes the horror that real Nazi’s inflicted on both Jews and Catholics in the 1940’s. My uncle, a Catholic priest in France, ā€œdisapppearedā€ during the war. After the liberation, he was found wandering in the streets of his home town, a bag of skin and bones.
I think that it would be more correct to say, "inflicted on both Jews and Christians ". But you speak the truth ā€œqui est ceā€, ā€œChristianity is under attackā€¦ā€, and has been, and will be until that glorious Day of the Lord.
ā€œAnd behold, I am with you all the days, until the completion of the age.ā€ (Matt. 28:20 D-R)

Even if it’s a boycott of one (me), I’ll feel like I’m doing something against what she’s trying to push on other people. She forgets that it’s the little people like me who buy the movie tickets and the dvd’s.

Because whenever you cannot remember some one’s name, pick the most derogatory title and use that.

She could not think of the words ā€œCurrent Pope, Former Popeā€? She didn’t know Nazi is an offensive term? Sheesh.
My kids always say ā€œOld Pope and New Popeā€ when referring to each of the Popes.

Yep.

Specifically the article goes on to state:

"However, the Catholic League of America was quick to slam Sarandon for her ā€œobsceneā€ words.

ā€œSusan Sarandon’s ignorance is willful: those who have hatred in their veins are not interested in the truth. The fact is that Joseph Ratzinger (the Pope) was conscripted at the age of 14 into the Hitler Youth, along with every other young German boy. Unlike most of the other teenagers, Ratzinger refused to go to meetings, bringing economic hardship to his family. Moreover, unlike most of the others, he deserted at the first opportunity,ā€ the league’s President William Donohue said in a statement. ā€œSarandon’s comment is obscene. Sadly, it’s what we’ve come to expect from her.ā€

Political commentator and film critic Michael Medved was also dismayed by the Nazi accusation.

ā€œCould Susan Sarandon be following a classic rule of public relations: When the world is increasingly ignoring you, try attacking the Pope? Why should anyone care what a fading Hollywood actress has to say about one of the most influential thinkers and religious leaders in the world?ā€ Medved told Fox411.com. ā€œHer denigration of Pope Benedict is particularly regrettable in light of this German pope’s moving and eloquent efforts to come to terms the horrors of the Holocaust.ā€

Sarandon also drew strong criticism from the Jewish community.

ā€œMs. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies. Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust,ā€ The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which fights anti-Semitism, said in a statement while also calling on Sarandon to issue an apology to the Catholic community.

Sarandon’s Hollywood agent did not respond to a request for comment.

However, entertainment and political publicist, Angie Meyer, said the veteran actress’s reputation is likely to suffer – at least temporarily – as a result of her controversial opinion.

ā€œSarandon’s now positioned herself in an unwise position by insulting a large religious sector, who might otherwise pay to watch her movies,ā€ Meyer said .ā€œHer outlandish words come as a huge liability to movie producers, and film financiers. There will be push back - she’s stuck her foot too far down to fully recover, at least for the short term.ā€ā€¦"

Right…but she may have not meant to attack Christianity or trivialize the holocaust just by using that word. So many people on this forum balk at all the ā€œpolitically correctā€ tip-toe talk…but here, she may have just let that word slip because she is aware of his ties to the Hitler Youth and was reaching to identify him…that’s what it sounds like.
If he was a member of the Hitler youth, does that mean he was a member of the ā€œNazi partyā€? Or would he have been too young to be considered that?
So glad your uncle survived. I have a friend, too, who survived the camps.
If what you are hoping for turns out to be true, than she will come out with a clear statement saying she does not think the Pope is a Nazi. If she does not come out and do that, we can assume she meant what she said.
