I was watching Rod Parsley this morning and he stated in Matt 16:18 Jesus actually pointed to himself when he made reference to the Rock?

Come again? Where does scripture even say Jesus was talking about himself or better yet, pointed to himself when he spoke to Peter?

I have noticed this position is being said by many fundamentalist and some Protestants?

Sounds like pure conjecture.

They, fundamentalist protestants, have to believe that Jesus was talking about himself in order to deny the primacy of Peter and the foundation of the true and visible Church. I just don’'t understand how a person can read “Thou art Cepha, and upon this Cepha I will build my Church” and believe that Jesus is addressing himself or some invisible church. I was a Southern Baptist and I do not recall ever having this passage of scripture even addressed. So kudos to Rod Parsley for even broaching the topic, though he is completely incorrect.

Exactly! It just baffles me how anyone can truly believe Jesus was talking about himself or actually pointed to himself? Yes, I also notice many fundamentalist and Protestants rarely or never discuss John 6.

When I was a Protestant it was obvious to me that Jesus meant Peter was the Rock. I think that many Protestants will bend over backwards trying to come up with something that does not say that Jesus created the papacy. Often the arguments may be silly orpossibly a musunderstanding of the language and time.

Geee…you are rare as an ex-Protestant because most Protestants I know will merely deny it even if they know the text is obvious. Do you think it is pride? 🤷

LDS also have the same view, that Jesus was talking about Himself being “the rock”. But, if you read it in context, it makes absolutely no literary sense to ever interpret it that way. I’ve seen some people do some pretty convoluted literary gymnastics about the way “the verb and pronoun relates back to the subject”, etc,. etc., in order to claim that it’s written in ‘plain English’, but their idea of plain English is a whole lot different than mine is. They would have to be completely devoid of any understanding in basic sentence structure to come up with some of their interpretations of it. 🤷

My ex pastor would fall right in line with the Rod Parley thinking. I mean come on. When we would read this in Scripture we would just blow through it. 😦

You are right it makes no literary sense at all. What I am curious to know where one can assume Jesus even pointed to himself? :ehh:

Problem with many so-called Bible-only folks is their bad habit of wanting the Bible to say something it never intended to say.

I grew up right down the road from Rod Parsleys Church. This guy made an absolute fortune selling his brand of theology. I have often wondered if he truly believes what he teaches or not. Then I realized I was just wasting my time because regardless, it wasn’t truth.

Sometimes I also wonder if people such as Rod Parsley are really there for God or to make the quick and easy big bucks? 🤷

Rod loves to hear himself talk. He MUST preach this, or he has no foundation (and no fantastic salary).

I remember seeing him on tv with these clips from Revivals he was at and omg, He would move his hands and waves of people would fall down… He and Benny Hinn have super powers or something…I always questioned these things at my old church.

Why is it that Catholics seem to watch these tv guys more than I do? 😃
I’d rather watch EWTN. Go figure.
