They’d have to be biritual
No they don’t. Biritual is only to be able to be the main celebrant. Concelebration doesn’t need biritual faculties. Although they would need an endorsement (as a formality) from their bishop to the Eastern bishop (usually to verify that they are indeed good standing priests). I’ve already been to a number of Divine Liturgies with guest RC concelebrants, both priests and bishops.

Also, they won’t be facing the people if they are the main celebrant. Only if there are enough concelebrants do priests end up on the far end of the Holy Table to be facing the people. So main celebrant stands on the main side facing East, then the first concelebrant to high right. Next concelebrant to his left. If the table is huge they keep filling out the sides before they send priests to the back who would then face the people.

You know what I predict? Mr. Casey is going to be closing threads and possibly putting a ban on discussing OF/EF Mass, since we have people that can’t seem to keep from making even subtle jabs:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=488839

Not saying you are one of them, I’m just sayin…all it takes is a look back over the past posts on this thread or just about any of them on the TC forum lately and you can find examples of what I’m talking about.
I will continue to pray for SSPX reconciliation. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want them to be reconciled.

There are many incidences of abusive masses posted on YouTube. Because I consider them scandalous, I won’t post the links here. Are they fabricated, or repeat postings of a single isolated abuse? Evidently not. I don’t blame anyone for being in denial, as I wish I didn’t know they occurred either.🤷

You also won’t see them celebrating the OF either…you know, the form that 99%+ of Catholics across the world attend.
Ah, but assuming for the sake of argument that your percentage is true, does that mean that a significantly larger percentage of Catholics would not attend the EF Mass, if it were available? In our diocese, one of the dozen largest in the US, there is exactly one parish offering the EF Mass, twice weekly. I’ve only been to the Sunday EF Mass, but on those occasions I have noted that the masses are packed, with courtyard seating only for late arrivals. By comparison, Sunday OF masses at the same parish, where the celebrants are the same- and highly revered- are less attended. There are seniors, young professionals, and abundant families assisting at the EF Mass, so it’s clearly not a case of pre-Vatican II fossils hanging on.

Ultimately, regardless of numbers or availability, Pope Benedict XVI supports the EF Mass and that’s good enough for me.🙂

There are extreme videos. They are not the norm. What is a concern is that the idea they represent can trickle into your local mass; namely Mass As Self Expression.

CITH, standing, lay women lectors in street clothes, pseudo-folk hymns on guitar in a vernacular mass would have been thought wild in 1930. Now they’re common.

Dancing at Mass is now the new horror. But if your bishop wants it or just turns a blind eye, it will happen.

I read this recently: That David dancing before the Lord didn’t happen at a religous service. He did it alone. So even that tangential support for this dubious practice is shaky.

People will revert to pagan customs if you let them. ‘Pagan’ originally meant rustic; the folk ways. The trend in folk culture is currently, maybe always, downward. Let the locals express their sentiments at The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass and they’ll be dancing at the foot of the Cross on Calvary, while serious souls go elsewhere.

We really need to get it our of our heads that everything the mass mind comes up with is of the Holy Spirit.

David danced naked before the Ark of the Covenant as it was being brought into Jerusalem so no, it was not a religious service per se, and apparently spontaneous. Let us pray that isn’t ever emulated in detail.:gopray2:

Yep, see the following just posted today forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=718975

SSPX guys!

The clown argument is born out of our childhood when like to deflect from our own situation by pointing to the kid down the street where his parents let him get away with far more. When I see an off-topic deflection, I think in my mind the person knows something is amiss or else he would not need to deflect. I know that others will start chasing down the same rabbit trail, but the first person to do it, he is deflecting.

Oh well. Since we can’t discuss the EF versus the OF and since the SSPX is very much about that, I guess we should stop discussing the SSPX as well.
Unfortunately, the issue of religious liberty (Dignitatis Humanae) may be the obstacle that proves insurmountable for the SSPX – not the Sacred Liturgy. (There already is a solution for the issue of the Sacred Liturgy.) It does not seem likely there will be continued dialogue regarding Dignitatis Humanae. We seem to be at a crossroad where Bishop Fellay is being told to read Dignitatis Humanae in light of Tradition and with the mind of the Church.

Do you speak Portuguese? I do. This is not a mass. This is a celebration in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida. They’re using local folklore and customs to celebrate it. Actually, the words that the MC is speaking are very beautiful and theologically true. He said, “We owe a debt of gratitude to Mary. Were it not for her, the Word of God would not reach us.” That’s why the girl at the top of that thing is carrying the Bible. It’s not a lectionary.

It’s not my culture and I would not be very comfortable there. I can appreciate their effort to honor Our Lady with what to them is joyful and beautiful.

We do this every year on the Feast of St. Francis, all over the world. You should have seen the critters that I blessed last Thursday, among them a tarantula. Those things make me shiver. I’ll tell you, it was the fasted blessing I ever gave.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂
Thank you; it has been explained previously that the Carnival Novena was in fact not a Mass. I still think it was horrid. Barnum and Bailey would of course be pleased by it, but a circus act with rediculous circus music is not the proper way to honor Our Lady in a cathedral.

I don’t think that the blessing of the animals is even on the same level or compares at all to the carnival/circus novena. Our local Dominican parish offered a blessing for pets (I think this week) in the parking lot of the church, and I was seriously considering taking one of my cats to be blessed, as she has health problems, but wasn’t able to do so; maybe next year. 🙂

To those who trivialize the importance of getting the SSPX back into full communion with Rome based on their relatively low numbers- I submit that the impact of having 570 highly traditional-minded priests and their congregations reunited with us may provide a spiritual impact greater than their numbers alone would suggest. In other words, that would be 570 priests guaranteed not to give us “clown masses” and “pagan faith dances” and other abominations.
Again, they are only present in a small number of dioceses.

From my experience “Trads” are not interested in mingling with the larger Church community. They seem to be very insular.

How can they have any impact if they stay so?

Its a fact that 570 priests is a very small number. I do not see how any one could think that they would have any large impact given the nature of the ministry they have chosen.

Since you mentioned about accepting a diversity of tradition and practice, I wonder if any of them (SSPX or FSSP) are willing to concelebrate in a Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom? And if they do, just for kicks, the Byzantine Rite celebrant should put them on the far side of the table so they are facing the people :D:D:D
They’d have to be biritual
You do not have to be biritual to concelebrate.

I agree with you that to our American mindset, it reminds us of Barnum and Bailey. Having lived in South America, I learned that they never heard of Barnum and Bailey. A circus to them is what we would call a carnival. A carnival to them is what we would call a street fair. This art form used to honor Our Lady does not match their idea of a circus or a carnival. It’s a very unique thing, for them. For us it’s very common place and it makes us feel uncomfortable.

Having been a missionary opened my eyes to many things. One of them was accepting the fact that Europe and the USA are not the center of the world or the Church. The other was that with the exception of the white population, the rest of the people in the Southern Hemisphere are nominally Catholic and have always been nominally Catholic, because what we think of as tradition, they think of as European and American colonialism.

They can’t help that. The white minority adheres to these traditions. That’s not bad. However, the white minority also adheres to racial discrimination against the mestizos, blacks and Indians. The prevailing comment when someone makes a mistake is, “You’re as dumb as an Indian.” If you’re sweaty from the gym or whatever, a typical white Latino expression is “You smell like a n i g g e r.” I think both statements are utterly disgusting. My saying so got me into trouble with many white Catholics down there.

Now, since these are the same people that you would find clamoring for “tradition”, how much Catholicism can we expect from the mestizo, Indian and black Latino? They’re either cool non practicing or very devout, but with very different customs from those of their white Catholic brethren.

There is more to conquer here than just introducing the Tridentine form. There is a hatred toward those people who subscribe to the Tridentine Form and the form becomes “guilty by association.” For some mestizos, becoming a Traditionalist is socially upward mobility. Don’t ask me why? Maybe the fact that the whites have usually been wealthy.
You do not have to be biritual to concelebrate.
Thanks guys. I don’t know much about Eastern Canon Law. I know that the other way around it works. The Eastern priest can concelebrate in any of the Latin rites, but didn’t know that it went both ways, because some things don’t seem to go both ways.

Unfortunately, we still have some people who refuse to give Holy Communion to Eastern Catholic infants attending a Roman Rite mass, which is absurd to the extreme. Don’t look at me. When they come in and say that they are Melkite and that they have a 9 month old, I tell our priests to give them Holy Communion. We even have a special little spoon just for that purpose. We keep it in our friary sacristy (really a closet :D).

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂

I’m sure those in Brazil who attended the Carnival Novena to Our Blessed Mother in the Cathedral will appreciate your defense, but I’m still not buyin’ it. I still think it’s really awaful. But I’ll not post further on it, as any response will only encourage more defense of the video. We’ll just have to disagree. 🙂
How does…
At the end of the day it is 2500 miles from where I live, on another continent. I’m not wasting my time getting all bent about it. It’s their own novena, not mine. Who cares how they do it? Not me. I have better things to do. 🤷
…make you think that I am defending anything?

Looks like this thread is dead. 🙂

I wish we could all get along.
I did not say that members could not discuss the EF and OF. I said that members cannot use such terms as sacrilege, heretical, banal etc, because usually, they’re using them incorrectly, as they are using the terms to describe not what the Church considers to be any of the above, but what the individual considers to be so. The individual does not have the right to denigrate the mass on this forum.

Also, the individual does not have the right to mount a resistance to the Extraordinary Form either. Some people make it their agenda to find a reason to resist it, rather than leaving it at why they prefer the Ordinary Form.

In both cases, the posters are being disrespectful about the mass in the other form.

Individuals are not allowed to be disrespectful to each other either or to people who are not present to defend themselves.

Finally, if anyone wants to support the Traditionalist position in favor of the EF, you have the proposals and comments made by the FSSP, ICRSS, Canons of St. John Cantius and other communities that are in full communion with the Holy See. To promote the SSPX’s position is hazardous until the SSPX is in full communion with Rome. Otherwise, it’s proselytizing for a community whose place in the Church is nebulous.

Great…now I need to go look up the definition of nebulous. 😃

Thanks for the clarification. 🙂

  1. Just having an EF Mass is not enough to bring people back to a full practice of the faith. Whether or not the SSPX is reconciled, other steps need to happen to help people know their faith.
Very true. The Mass does not replace good catechetics - it requires it.
