Yes, the OP does say that, but it took a different turn immediately and the OP-er was happy with it. (prodigal, maybe we need to start another thread…)

Nobody said you, Benedictus2, need to poke fun at your own faith or your own religion. It was a silly suggestion, just like the rest of the silliness on the thread.

But I do think a person can be too serious about their religion to the point of moroseness, phony piety and pharasaism. There’s a fine line between a person taking their religion / faith seriously and taking themselves seriously. When you’re aware of the distinction in yourself, it’s a revelation. But very often it’s the latter taking the form of the former and it shows up time and time again on CAF threads. This thread and other silliness are respites from that.

Then it might be good to take a quick peek at the OP.😉

Appreciate the clarification but you did say poke fun at our own religion.

I wasn’t judging your faith. Merely explaining why I can’t poke fun at my own religion. And as for this belonging to some other thread, well, all I can say is refer back to the OP.
Actually, I think…

One should poke fun ONLY at one’s own religion.

Why?

Because, frankly, it’s really hard to poke fun at someone else’s religion and not be mean spirited. On some level, y’see, you actually MEAN it, when you go after someone else’s belief/culture.

…and that can be a problem.

That said, remember—what we poke fun at isn’t the basic, deep held faith, or the basic underpinnings of that faith. What we should take with a big grain of, well…fun…are the trappings that surround it.

I mean, really. I KNOW why I wear Temple garments, for instance…but let’s face it, they are funny. Ask me about the “Mormon smile” someday. 😉

The MEANING of them is not. The reason we wear them is not…but …c’mon. Who can’t not smile at the idea of the incredibly sincere young lady trying to find a swim suit that covers 'em?

Who can’t not see a little joy in the nun that tucks her habit up so that she can play basket ball with her students?

What’s WITH those funny collars, anyway? And the HAT the Pope wears?

Ok, I mean…really. Prayer shawls?

Of course, there are Mormon funeral potatos, and Utah being the jellow capital of the world, and Mormon baby names…SHEESH, Mormon BABY Names???

…or all the comebacks we have developed to the really dumb questions we are asked.

Oh. Hey.

THAT’S a good one.

Catholics are asked some really dumb questions. I mean, REALLY dumb. What are some of your favorite comebacks?

WAIT A MINUTE!!! What about Mormon funeral potatoes? And why is Utah the jello capitol of the world? And what about the Mormon smile?
Now we’re getting somewhere…:yyeess:

Oh, c’mon…I think probably the Catholics and the Baptists claim the funeral potatos for themselves…

As for the jello thing, that’s actually true. Utah Mormons make a LOT of jello salad. Green jello. Shredded carrots. Marshmallows and pineapple (the LITTLE marshmallows, mind you…) and cottage cheese.

I haven’t had that salad for decades. I almost feel like a heretic. 😉

As for the “Mormon smile?” (grin) Well, I may tell you about that one later.

I had a friend of mine that was rather animated with his humor. He reinacted a scene where a group of Mormon missionaries were doing their thing door to door in some track housing, and another set of JW’s were doing the same, they wore similar attier, but upon reaching the same house and the same part of the street, it turned into a street gang brawl of sorts. It was hilarious with how he presented it, poking fun at the canvassing mainly, and I so wish we could put that one into a skit, I’m sure it would have people rolling in the isles observing it.

That’s good fun there in the context, anybody with a camcorder is free to exploit that little idea, it has the potential for a tremendous amount of laughs if done correctly, and in the end, not really poking fun at anybody or their beliefs, just raw humor… especially if the Pope or someone dressed like him broke up the fight with some quim.

God does have a sense of humor is what I"m getting at, Christ had a limited amount of time to do what he had to, not much time for that at all while he was on this earth, at least none of it was recorded, but he very much does, for it’s a human trait that has nothing but benefits to our being in soul, and body.

dianaiad,

I’ve been googling…
Mormon funeral potatoes:
hubpages.com/hub/A-Tradition–Mormon-Funeral-Potatoes

I don’t know if we claim them or not…Baptists probably do, though…
Lutherans are probably into German potatoes… Catholics have Irish potatoes…help me out here because I have no idea where I’m going with this…

At some point Des Moines edged out Salt lake City as the Jello Capitol of the World (I’m sorry!) but the article does mention a Mormon proclivity for green jello salad. I lost the link, but it’s out there, I promise.

It DID???

My heart is utterly broken!!!

I believe you.

…and in case anybody is wondering about my claim to a Mormon cultural identity, I do love the funeral potatos…They are truly great. They have all the required nutrients; calories. calories and more calories.

Ok, I don’t mind looking like a total idiot (since I do it so well…); I thought when you said “Mormon funeral potatoes” as though it were some mysterious unique thing, it had something to do with the actual Mormon funeral rite.

Well, people do put strange things in caskets…:rotfl:

I am so disappointed with this thread. Can we please stay on the topic of tearing each other apart and save the nicey-nice stuff for all the other threads that we talk to each other in? 😉

God bless
Your mama! Just thought I’d stay on topic LOL

Very true, which is why I never claimed that. You also realize that the Bible could very well be just as true as the Quaran, right?
From an Atheists perspective yes.
No. I am asking why you think you should do that at all.
It wasn’t me who posted this but I think this was said in jest.
Wouldn’t it be easier for you to prove to me that they are necessary? I see no where in the Bible that it mentions doing any of the things Catholics do; such as Hail Mary’s.
Nope, because I am not the one disputing it. You are the one querying it so the burden of proof is on you.

A quick reply regarding the Hail Mary. Go to Luke. This is Elizabeths’s salutation when Mary visited her and John the Baptist lept in her womb.
I NEVER said that it was historically accurate in everything. I said that nothing has been proven inaccuarte.
In cases of myths there is no way of proving anything accurate because myths do not deal with accuracies. Some stories in the Bible are myths and some are historical.
There are different beliefs on how the Earth was started, but that doesn’t mean that the Biblical belief in creation has been diproven.
If there are differing accounts in the Bible itself of the origin of the universe, then don’t you think we have to set out first which one is correct from our perspective before anyone could disprove it?
But, Jesus did NOT say that it’s the way we SHOULD pray. He said:
“Pray, then, in this way (or “in this manner” {NKJV}). 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name…” {Matthew6:9 NASB} “in this way” that means it is an exapmle of how we should pray. I am not saying that reciting the Lord’s prayer is a bad thing to do; however, it is not a very specific prayers, and I hear people use it all the time in very different situations.
NAB Matthew 6:9-10

9 "This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

And yes it is a very specific prayer. It is the most perfect prayer. If you are interested, the Pope has actually devoted a whole chapter on this prayer alone in his book “Jesus of Nazareth”. A great book.

If you like I can post bits and pieces of his explanations of the our father in another thread just for you.
That’s like saying why did God bother putting us on the Earth; he should have just sent us to Heaven or Hell right away…I mean he already knows if we choose to follow his ways or not
.
Not quite right but I won’t go into that now as predestination is a whole different kettle of fish best tackled on its own. You missed my point though. I was trying to show that the rule you made (that we should pray only personal, own words prayer) is precisely just that, your own rule.
Alright, I will do that for you. All you had to do was ask.
And, maybe saying that they are “pagan” was the wrong word, and I appologize.
  • Catholics do not believe that Christ’s death paid the full penalty for sin.
Only because as I have said before you do not know Catholic Doctrine. I would even venture to say you know almost zilch about Catholic doctrine.

Catholic doctrine never ever said that. But your idea of “penalty for sin” needs more elaboraton because your (possibly Calvinistic) concept is wrong with regards this aspect of salvation theology.
Thus the idea of purgatory. If they believed that, then there would be no reason for a purgatory. --If I am correct, in Catholicism, Purgatory is the place where those who are to enter Heaven must go in order to be “washed of their sins.”
Purgatory as the name implies means purgation, to be purged of sin.

Explain this to me: I am presuming that you are some sort of “born again” Christian and you believe that once saved always saved.
So let’s say you have been “born again” so “washed clean, regenerated”, led an almost spotless life, but then you get overtaken by lust for this person and you commit sin again (raped someone) and in the process of raping someone was shot in the head by the police. What happens then, where do you go?

I will give you a better understanding of what the doctrine of purgatory really means on my next post.
What I don’t understand is…if Jesus’ blood was shed to “wash away our sins”, then what is the necessity of Purgatory?
When we are baptized, all our sins (original and personal) are all washed away. If you should get hit by a car and die straight after, then you got straight to heaven.

But many commit sins again after baptism, hence purgatory.
This is one thing, the idea of a “between Heaven location”, Purgatory is a pagan idea.
Nope. The very early Christians believed in purgatory. It is only protestant theology which is essentially truncated Christianity that did away with this doctrine. The Orthodox churches (though they have not defined this doctrine) also believe in it. This is incorporated in their doctine of Theosis, the process of deification.

Oh and BTW, CS Lewis (who is prostestant) believes in purgatory. Will post his thoughts on this later.
  1. Catholics are idolatrous, they honor/worship Mary. Isn’t one of the things Catholic say, something like: “Holy Mary, mother of God”?
We honor Mary. We do not worship her. And Mary is indeed Holy. She is now in heaven so she is Holy. And Mary IS the mother of God. Again, go to Luke.

The trinity is the ONLY one we are to worship.
Absolutely 10000% in agreement with you there.
If it was considered the quadinity or something like that (God, Mary, Jesus, Holy Spirit).
The quadinity of something is protestantisms formulation. We do not have such a doctrine. Again, if you are going to attack please read up on it. Your ignorance is painful. If you had instead asked do we believe in the “quadinity of something” that would have gone down much better.

This belief by the way is a malicious lie peddled by some protestants. Now the devil is the father of lies. Conclude what you may from that statement.
But, it is simply the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
.
Top marks for that!
Obviously I am missing something, and I am willing to listen to what you haev to say about it; without any criticism…since I am curious, and would like to learn.
Then perhaps you should start with questions, rather than statements.
–It just seems that unless I get right to the point, and get people fired up, I never get answers. So, I would really like to appologize for my past few posts if they sounded disrespectful and mean.
CI, I actually like you. Your doggedness in insisting to be taken seriously and your desire for honest debate is commendable. I like the fact that you are interested in good honest debate and not nicey feelgood stuff.
Unum Sanctum: From what I’ve been told about Catholic teaching is that this in some way has something to with that only Catholics can be saved. Of course, I don’t know, so I am just wondering
.
I will leave my response to this for later as there are a lot of things you have raised here.

Suffice to say that indeed those who are saved are members of the Catholic Church. One way or another, everyone saved will belong to the communion of saints (the Church Militant – saints here on earth) and the Church Triumphant – saints in heaven).

Anyone who ends up in heaven is therefore a member of the Catholic Church. If you are not Catholic now, then you will be when you get to heaven.

Well benedictus2, hunny, the OP was in a completely different context as to what it turned into, a very delightful response that was received with Joy the moment I checked back into it after creating it the night before, the absolute opposite of what I expected, and I feel, a gift from God, for it came so perfectly with what I was feeling at the time, just a nice breath of fresh air in all ways for me, and originally thought me alone, now seeing many more people just loving the energy it’s created, much less, grins that are on many of our faces during it as being the norm. I also think it has contagious benefits, with us joking around and having fun together here, we are going to be a lot less harsh with how we treat each other with the more serious threads.

Sooo…I meant one thing, God sent me another, I’m forever grateful for this little perk in my day, from that day, then rolling on the floor laughing seeing the spin it took of to on page two and onwards, and that’s why the context is the way it is here and why the mods haven’t moved this into the humor section already, I’m also grateful for. So, now I guess, it’s a blend of flavors, we have real debate and discussion, we have goofieness, my parish priest and most that fill in always seem to get us laughing at the end of mass and it’s all very much never against the faith at all as well with that other tangent you discussed. I’m just going to let this thing keep going and try to keep it up in the direction that it seemed to go from the beginning, so please excuse others that want to do the same.

God bless you, Brian
Well, PS12, sweetheart, you can call me B2 (as in Riboflavin) until you know me better :D.

All that is well and good. I don’t need to excuse others that want this thread to go the fun and merry way. This thread can meander every which as you said in the OP. If some of us meander the serious way, I don’t think we should be told that said discussion is not for this thread when it was the intent of the thread in the first place.

Anyone who ends up in heaven is therefore a member of the Catholic Church. If you are not Catholic now, then you will be when you get to heaven.

So, why be Catholic now then? Can’t I crack jokes between now and that fate that transforms me to endure eternity instead?

Actually, I think…
One should poke fun ONLY at one’s own religion.
In a way yes. The only one you should poke fun at is your own, not other’s. So really, one should not poke fun at any religion at all.

But showing the error in others’ religion is not exactly making fun of them although some do indeed do that in the process.

Having said that, I am not saying that one cannot crack jokes with a religious flavour to it.😉

Well it is not quite that simple. And no,it has nothing to do with cracking jokes:).

My statement is merely to affirm that Jesus intends to gather us into His Church. In the end, all who get to heaven WILL AFFIRM THE TRUTH of what the Church teaches.

It is like someone who does not beileve in purgatory who ends up there and he/she goes: “aaah, so they were right, there is purgatory after all.”😃

Good Night,

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Goodnight, sleep tight, don;t let the bed bugs bite.😃

Magnificat
My soul glorifies the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.
He looks on his servant in her nothingness; henceforth, all ages will call me blessed.
The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name!
His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him.
He puts forth his arm in strength
and scatter the proudhearted.
He casts the mighty from their thrones
and raises the lowly.
He fills the starving with good things,
sends the rich away empty.
He protects Israel,
his servant remembering his mercy,
the mercy promised to our fathers,
for Abraham and his sons for ever.

Praise the Father, the Son and Holy spirit, both now and for ever, world without end. :harp:

Nice try…takes a lot more to get me down. 😉
I am not trying to be mean, honestly. But, nobody is giving me anything to go off of.
Prodigalson12, you could always try answering some of my confusion about Catholocism, since you are a [all Caps] Catholic yourself, raher than use clever ways of poking fun at me. 👍
CI, I am taking you seriously so have created a thread “Answering Christ Imitators’ Questions on Cathlicism” so we can get on with the discussion without putting a damper on the party here.

You left out us Italians! Our funeral potatoes are called gnocchi–a pasta made of potatoes and flour. 3 or 4 of them take about 72 hours to digest–saves on the food bills:D

I mean, really. I KNOW why I wear Temple garments, for instance…but let’s face it, they are funny. Ask me about the “Mormon smile” someday. 😉
N: “‘Temple garments’ – too funny, they look like they were designed by a Warner Brothers animator!”

D: “Yes, we Mormons are a strange lot; say, what’s that thing underneath your shirt?”

N: “Oh, this? It’s a scapular; it’s a facsimile of the monastic hair shirt, and it’s supposed to irritate the skin and remind you not to sin throughout the day. The plastic cover is great – it’s almost like perpetual flagellation! You’re never supposed to take it off, even when sleeping or… well, you’re never supposed to take it off.”

D: “No, I mean the other thing.”

N: "Oh, that’s a cornicello. It’s an Italian amulet in the shape of a bull’s horn that’s sacred to the moon goddess and is used to ward off the ‘mallocchio’ (evil eye). I wear it next to my crucifix.
