Yes, and his Presidency obliterated true states rights.
Lincoln never posed any threat to states’ rights, nor could he have done anything if he wanted to if the southern Democrats had stayed in Congress rather than seceding.

Lincoln fought the war to preserve the Union (true) but even more so to preserve the principle that a minority can’t just overturn the results of an election. He never articulated this in public that know of because it’s hardly something people are going to charge onto the battlefield for.

I don’t think it will happen but if Sanders stays in for the general Trump might win with ~40%. Looking to the future the GOP may split into two third parties.

I don’t think Sanders would stay in the race as a third-party candidate but his supporters may not turn out in sufficient numbers for Hillary Clinton. That might also mean that Trump will win.

That is a good point.
The South seceded at precisely the same moment that the side that they backed lost the election to Lincoln.

So many Southern Americans, with their misplaced sense of honor and Southern pride, dismiss the importance of the Lincoln presidency.
The fact is that Lincoln’s victory in the Civil War transformed the South too.
Southerners are no different than any body else in the West when it comes to no longer believing that blacks were made to be slaves.
This state of affairs came about because Lincoln won the election, and Stevens lost, the war was lost by Lincoln and lost for Jefferson Davis.

This is huge, not just for the South, not just for America, but for the world itself.
That has just how much influence that America has had on world history.

That is why it is contemptible that ingrates like Obama want to ###%% all away, as if America is not something special and unprecedented in world history.
I disagree with what you say for other reasons, but will just stick to one, which is that what you say assumes a fairly static societal situation which was changed as a result of the Civil War whereas people’s minds were already changing wrt slavery.

Yea, right.

They were changing sooo much that the nation split up as soon as Lincoln got elected.

Lincoln did not set out to obliterate states rights, but that was the impact of his Presidency. If the civil war had never happened, there were ways to get rid of slavery without the need for thousands to die. Lincoln did not set out to stop slavery–in fact, he took no real stance against slavery until he was forced to do so. If states rights were still in place, then various states could pass laws against abortion–but that “right” went away after the Civil War.
