Not Iroquois. The myth that the Founders studied the Iroquois Nations for inspiration about the American form of government is just that: a myth. It never happened.

The thesis was advanced by a few historians who got a bit carried away noting superficial similarities and minor meetings combined with a whole bunch of unsupportable speculation about the Founders “real motives.” Basically, the entire thesis was a giant post hoc error that was seized upon by the media and then took on a life of its own.

Good of you to comment on this!

I wonder when such unsupported speculations will stop being reported as real documented history?

LOL. I don’t know, but if I had to bet money, I’d say about the time our good Lord returns. 🙂

We may see a few lovely revelations before that time because revisionist fabricators of history have not yet been able to censor the internet.

Decades ago communication was limited so that few were ever informed that such things as English common law was a Catholic invention.

Do you deny that Moses and the Ten Commandments
are featured at the Supreme Court building?
Actually they are NOT in the SC building. There is a carving of Moses because he is recognized as an historical lawgiver. He is displayed holding some tablets but they do NOT contain any text and thus are not preaching the ten commandments.

patg…the frieze inside depicts Moses holding the tablets in a manner in which 6 of the commandments are visible.
The writing is in Hebrew.

For some reason, persons on this Catholic site keep trying to deny the basis of Christianity in the founding of this country. Why is that?

US govermental buildings contain many acknowledgements of the Christian basis of the US founding…too many to list.but includng statues of the apostle Paul and other biilcal references.

For fun, you ACLU types should campaign to take down the painting of the Christian baptism .of Pocohantas that was in the the Rotunda of the US capital.

I am born and raised Catholic and my question is “Why care?” Honestly, I don’t understand. It seems people are so needy and hung up on branding government with some sort of Christian stamp. I see it as a sign of weak faith; as if they need the approval of the government.

Why care? Because there are people running around trying to rewrite American history. It is Orwellian. Why would Catholics deny the truth of the role of religion in the founding of America? It happens on thread after thread. What happened, what was preached, that church services were held for over 60 years in the House of Representatives, that they were held in Supreme Court chambers and in executive branch office buildings in not a matter for debate.

It is fact. It is not “branding” the founding of American with anything. It is telling the truth. I wouldn’t even bother mentioning religion and early America if misinformation wasn’t so widespread.

Yet when information is provided proving Catholics on this forum were incorrect…a few days later a new thread on the topic is posted and the people come out with the same disinformation.

Why?

I don’t get it.

Those that deny the past have no future. For the future is based on the true past.

Okay, but it’s not really about rewriting history, but about what you consider the rewriting of American religious history. I don’t see people wailing and carrying on over the way Columbus’ first trip to the Americas has been portrayed. It’s not like we have a nation of history buffs outraged over history textbooks and TV portrayals.

It’s a certain kind of history, and I’d call your examples practices - not events. It just feels like people give this stuff all this importance and in the end they are arguing over minutia. That early settlers wanted to be free to practice their faith and now they want the government’s stamp of approval; it’s ironic.

Besides, I think Catholics need to tread very carefully when they walk with “Christians.” I’ve seen a lot of rewriting of history on this board when it comes to the anti-Catholic bigotry espoused by some of our “cousins.” I rarely mind things that get their shorts in a knot.

Thanks for the clarification. That almost no one can read them does change their significance in regards to promoting a specific religion.

I don’t deny it - I just recognize the inherent dangers of a political system supporting a specific religion, regardless of the views of the founders. It has never been a good thing.

Fundamentalists make gracious and reliable neighbors.
And so did the average Communist or Nazi. Your point?
BTW are you some sort of troll? Items that you post take positions that deny the Christian basis of this country
I also deny that the moon is made of green cheese.

This country was not founded on the basis of the Christian religion nor was established as a Christian nation.

Just because the Fundies are pushing that false view of American history to fit into their eschatological doctrine doesn’t mean that Catholics should buy into it.

I agree. The “Christians” (who generally deny that Catholics are also Christians) have an agenda to make America a “Christian” nation. To them, that means not a Protestant nation (few, if any mainline Protestants are pushing that line) but a Fundamentalist evangelical nation based on their reading of the Bible.

Sadly, they’ve suckered some Catholics into agreeing with them.

Who denies that religion had a role in the founding of America? Not I. I deny, based on the facts, that America was founded as a Christian nation or that our Constitution is based on the Bible, etc. That’s the false Fundamentalist view.
What happened, what was preached, that church services were held for over 60 years in the House of Representatives, that they were held in Supreme Court chambers and in executive branch office buildings in not a matter for debate.
You’re right and you can also bet the farm that not one of those services were Catholic, a religion that was generally despised by the Founding Fathers as well as by most Americans at the beginning of the 19th century. (Only one Catholic, Charles Carroll, signed the Declaration if Independence)

Are you speaking of Fundamentalists? “Jesus-loving”? Sure, not Catholic-loving, though. And, you’ve given a good reason for me to always oppose their trying to impose their brand of “Christianity” on America. I don’t want this country to reflect the narrow, bigoted, prejudiced values of Fundamentalists. Catholics have had more than enough grief from those people.
I see. You’d much rather have the country reflect the narrow, bigoted, prejudiced values of anti-Christians, those that promote the killing of babies, killing of the disabled, cloning of humans, pornography, same-sex obscenity in the schools, and criminal offenses for witnessing to the Gospel.

I’ll take the “bigoted” fundamentalists. I have no fear of them. They witness to me. I witness back to them. And then we agree on fundamental values of a society and raising a family. The reason I have trouble sometimes showing the truths of Catholicism is because we have prejudiced Catholics that speak of hating fundamentalists on one hand and voting for pro-abortion candidates on the other. Thanks for the help.

Richardols:
Yes, they did, and those founding fathers did not try to impose any religion they followed on this country.
No kidding. And neither is anybody doing it today. So why is the ACLU all bent out of shape?

Oh. Thank God for that. If there was text on the commdments, the text would walk down the wall and seize the non-believers, shoving their head into the Bible until they screamed for air.

Thank you for bringing Catholic reason and logic into the discussion.
